a PSA for anyone who is confused by the panic over the UK heatwaves! ☀️
the UK has an amber warning declared for a heatwave this weekend, where temperatures will reach above 30C (86F). to many, especially Americans, this doesn't seem like a notable temperature, and i've seen many ignorant posts mocking UK residents who are worried about how they and their loved ones will be affected by the temperatures. i'd like to explain why heatwaves in the UK are different than other parts of the world, and why they cause such a panic: 🔥 because we are an island nation, our heat isn't dry: it's horrendously humid. high humidity means that your lungs need to work harder to breathe, and it's much harder for your sweat to evaporate in the air. sweating is how your body regulates its temperature, and you sweat more in humid environments. when sweat doesn't evaporate it remains on the skin, leaving you feeling hot, sticky, and ill. 🔥 our homes and buildings are built to retain heat. because the UK is so cold and rainy for the vast majority of the year, our homes are supposed to trap heat, not let it out. not only are our homes smaller on average, but between double glazing, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation, when heat hits a British home, it causes a greenhouse effect. heat just sits in our homes, and it doesn't dissipate at night, meaning we are unable to sleep. 🔥 we have no air conditioning. i have never been in a home with air-con, and very few public buildings have it (except some shops). because of the aforementioned cold, rainy conditions that affect the UK for the vast majority of the year, air-con has never received a significant roll-out here. this means that we have little to no relief from being inside buildings besides being in the shade, and few homes even have fans. 🔥 our city centres are packed and highly urbanised, which causes heat traps. because our streets and homes are often stacked tightly together, including rows of houses/buildings/etc., heat in densely packed areas has nowhere to go, and will simply sit. trying to walk through a city during a heatwave will leave you sweating and exhausted in minutes. likewise, there are limited spaces to go to cool off during these temperatures: people will literally go to the shops to stand in the fridge/freezer aisles. 🔥 our infrastructure is not built to cope with heat. during heatwaves, our tarmac melts. the rails which hold our trains bend and warp. our grass catches fire. a few years ago, airport runways cracked and lifted in the heat, halting flights. the UK is brought to a standstill during high temperatures because our cities and towns are built for colder, wetter temperatures. add in the 16 hours of daylight we get during the summer, and you have a recipe for disaster. 🔥 the hottest temperature ever recorded in the UK is 40C (104F). this was in England, and in other UK countries, it's even lower: in Wales, it was 37.1C (98.78F); in Scotland, it was 34.8C (94.64F), and in Northern Ireland, it was 31.3C (88.3F). because these are our highest temperatures, many of us are unused to the symptoms which signify heat exhaustion or heat stroke. i need to emphasise: people die during heatwaves. i highly encourage people to read about the 2022 UK heatwaves, which saw the deaths of nearly 3000 people (many of whom were elderly). we could do nothing but hunker down and survive the heat during this time, and it was especially dreadful for anyone who is older, disabled, and/or neurodivergent. so while 30C is not unheard of in the UK, any heatwave poses significant risks, including illness, disruption to transport, wildfires, and even death. thanks for reading, and to everyone from outside the UK who's provided useful advice on keeping cool! i'm sure we'll be alright, but i'm hoping folks won't parrot misinformation about us just 'not being able to cope with the heat' 💔
it's that special time of year when a heatwave is hitting the UK and mockery/misinformation spreads like wildfire from people who don't live here. so just some reminders for those unfamiliar with how UK heat can be deadly 💖
[EDIT] this is being reblogged a bit without context and some people have asked me about it, so just to clarify: i made this post in 2025 when we had an amber warning and well above 30C heat. presently there is no warning in place, but at least in my city we will hit 30C tomorrow, and London will be around 34C. nowhere near as bad as last year, and certainly not on the level of the 2022 heatwaves. i just wanted to circulate this post again to combat the misinformation which always happens every time we have high heat in the UK. thanks for understanding 🫡

[Description: a looping bouncy animation of grace and Rocky from project hail mary. Grace throws himself onto rocky for a hug, smiling and nuzzling his face to the top of Rocky's xenonite covered carapace. Rocky brings a claw up to ruffle Grace's hair and grace throws himself even more on top of rocky, rocky wrapping his arms around grace. End description.]

Everyone needs to be kinder to trans women right the fuck now. ESPECIALLY you reading this.
"Grace Ryland is Rocky's dog" is such a funny fucking dynamic when you think about it
Eridians are further behind than humans technologically right? They dont have computers, relativity, quantum mechanics, etc. In fact, Eridians probably dont even know about the Big Bang because their atmosphere would filter out most of the cosmic microwave background radiation we use to detect it. On a human timeline, theyre anywhere between like early-mid 20th century. Rocky's basically a cosmonaut.
So the human civilization is pretty advanced from Rocky's perspective. Rationally he understands this. On a conceptual level he knows this to be true.
But at the same time... imagine youre one of the first ever cosmonauts to make it into space. Then you meet a 10 year old alien dog who cant do 2+2 without pulling out its calculator. It forgets everything constantly and has to keep notes everywhere, like it basically lives in Memento (2000). Also if it doesnt nap constantly it gets even stupider. And you somehow has to reconcile this with the fact that this dog has a better understanding of physics than your entire civilization does. Like the dog knows how the universe started.
I haven't even seen the movie (or read the book) but I keep seeing things about this story, and I did see an interview with Andy Weir about Eridian biology and culture. And this is a fascinating dichotomy to me.
It seems to me that the Eridians would not be less scientifically advanced. They can achieve the same things, can they not? Both species reached the same dying star with the same odds of finding a solution to an astrophysics catastrophe. They just used different means to get there.
They don't have different levels of understanding of the universe. They prioritized different fields of study. Humans aren't more advanced. They focused on advancements that compensated for their weaknesses. Weaknesses Eridians don't have. Eridians don't have computers because they don't need them. They figured out the same rocketry and astrophysics doing mental math
Imagine a more extreme difference of the same kind. Say a telepathic alien that didn't need computers, or rockets, because they focused on genetic engineering and created life forms capable of living in space and acting as ships. Or who understands physics so completely that their own mind is all they need to bend space and walk from one planet to another. At a glance, a human might interpret them as "dumb animals" because their technology is biological rather than metal and silicon. You can't see their prowess for genetic engineering.
This is the same, is it not? It's only from a human observer's position that the Eridians look less technologically advanced. Because their advancements look unlike yours.
So fun fact this point is very explicit especially in the book (to a lesser degree also much the movie). Eridians are incredible material engineers and most of their structures are built in a xenon alloy humans can only dream of. The reason they don't know how relativity and radiation work is that due to their atmosphere and magnetic field no sunlight or radiation reaches the ground, meaning they never developed eyes and didn't know light existed at all until very recently. So no wonder they don't really understand something humans have such an evolutionary head start on studying!
Again in the book it's very cool how Grace and Rocky discuss their technological similarities and differences and both are ready to share all their own species' advancements with the other. It does a really good job imo at showcasing how the two species aren't one better than the other, they just advanced in different ways due to different skills/sensory organs/environmental factors
i dont consider myself a 'fashion guru' by any means but one thing i will say is guys you dont need to know the specific brand an item you like is - you need to know what the item is called. very rarely does a brand matter, but knowing that pair of pants is called 'cargo' vs 'boot cut' or the names of dress styles is going to help you find clothes you like WAAAYYYY faster than brand shopping
this also goes for aesthetic or -core titles. 'y2k tank top' is going to get you resellers and fast fashion brands advertising to people looking to meet a current trend. 'thin strap crop tank top' is going to get you a diverse group of results and not upcharge you to hell and back
additionally, shop second hand when you can, second hand and thrift sites typically organize clothes by the cut and color. theyll be more affordable than a depop seller curating you a style to sell you
useful terminology for different kinds of clothing shapes :)
here are more terms! these are all from enérie. it is a really good blog that has lots of fashion terminology and it's a good mix of menswear and womenswear! they also have a book as well compiling all their diagrams. you could also look into getting a visual fashion dictionary for terms as well!
at some point during high school i drew a centaur girl with large breasts because i wanted to draw a character that looked like me, and my biofamily got real upset about it. "why are they so large" because mine are that large. "wouldn't that make it hard for her to run" interesting that you think that but keep trying to make me run. "don't draw things like this, it's morally bad" ok i and my apparently inherently pornographic body will just be over here trying to avoid being looked at
this is not to say porn is bad, tbc. i just wasn't a fan as a teenager of being treated like it was impossible to look at bodies like mine non-sexually. frankly i'm not a fan of it now either lmao. i keep kind of thinking about how so many female protagonists are canonically flat or small-chested girls/women who textually wish they had larger breasts, but i can't remember the last time i encountered a protagonist with large breasts where that fact wasn't meant to be sexual. what is up with that dynamic and how do i destroy it
it's like... in order to be accepted as a woman, the character has to desire the idealized form of The Perfect Woman (or if she's a #feminist, reject and detest that same idealized form, but the focus on it is often still there). but in order to be a non-pornographic protagonist, she can't attain it. the moment you have a large enough chest you don't really get to be a normal character anymore, you have to go to sex world. idk. probably someone better read than me has written some sort of papers on this. idk what search terms to use though
I've been redrawing Wario Land 3 sprites.
The engulfed in flame one wasn't originally going to happen but well....
