New York No Wave (1980) Rising from the ashes of Punk, No Wave was a downtown hard-left turn from the burgeoning uptown scene of New Wave. Primarily an experimental underground music movement, No Wave rejected all commercial aspects contemporary art: film, dance, performance and fashion. No Wave music presented a negative and nihilistic world view that reflected the desolation of late 1970s New York, ‘a wasteland of cheap rent and cheap drugs.’ The movement did not last long, but it profoundly influenced the development of independent film & video, avant garde fashion and visual art in the preceding decades.
