Birds

Hey Guys,

So, starting August 9th of this year, I will be beginning non-neornithean Avialans (so, Mesozoic Birds). I didn’t do them back when I was doing theropods for the first time and I’ll have no other Dinosaurs (apart from new taxa, which will trickle in as we have time) to do. 

Starting January 10, 2018, I’ll begin “modern” birds (aka, Neornithes). Almost all of them are from the Cenozoic. 

This will be the content of the main posts - apart from new taxa & updated old posts & throwbacks - for the rest of this blog’s existence. 

Though I know that this isn’t a surprise for anyone, given how much I have stated that birds are dinosaurs, and that I plan on doing every dinosaur, I still know there will be people who protest this switch in blog content. Just know that this really isn’t a switch; I’ve already covered many animals that would probably have been called birds if alive today (such as Velociraptor). Indeed, looking at birds (both living and extinct) educates us a lot about the group Dinosauria proper, and helps us to understand their biology and evolution in new and exciting ways. Plus, very few Dinosaur encyclopedias contain even Mesozoic birds, much less Cenozoic/extant ones. I’m hoping to fill that gap. 

There will still be non-avian content (like stated above, throwback posts, newly discovered dinosaurs, and updated posts); also of course, Dinosaur March Madness, Community Events like Pride Month & Dinoween, and Pterosaur Ptuesday. Non-avian content will still be here, don’t you worry. 

So, this is an announcement - not a warning, because honestly, I think that doing birds is going to be really exciting. Extinct birds are ridiculously under-discussed and amazingly fascinating, and it’s going to be great to talk about them and teach you all about them - and extant birds are obviously amazing too (plus, photographs!!! and more complete life histories!!!) 

To people who don’t like birds: never fear! There will still be non-avian dinosaurs for you to enjoy 

To people who like birds: get PUMPED 

To people who don’t know: Let me show you how awesome birds can be :D

Baby Bongo Born at Franklin Park Zoo

On April 27, an Eastern Bongo named Annakiya gave birth to a female calf at Franklin Park Zoo. The Eastern Bongo is a species of antelope found in Kenya in East Africa, and they are currently classified as “Critically Endangered” by the IUCN.

An airport security routine that routinely violates privacy rights and is basically authoritarian theatre

Poor people paying about 20% in taxes, with real wages unchanged since the 19 fucking 70s, while most of the real income gains have gone to the 1% richest people in our society

Income inequality the worst it’s been since the Great Depression

Minorities, mentally ill, and/or homeless people getting brutalized and shot routinely by the police

No left-wing party worth speaking of, just diet right, classic right, and zero-calorie right (now with 3.27% of the popular vote)

About half our food being wasted while people starve

The NRA advertising authoritarian, us vs. them rhetoric straight out of old-timey propaganda films

A president who is on the record as having endorsed and committed sexual assault, has committed fraud, and isn’t even good at the thing he was supposed to be good at

His opponent during the election, who used literal slave labor and has endorsed bombing people halfway around the world on a routine basis, as detailed above

Gerrymandering so thick that we’ve got states that aren’t even classified as democracies anymore

Bulgaria just appointed a facist and neo-Nazi, Valeri Simeonov (who is also Deputy Prime Minister), to lead their council on how to “deal” with the Romani people in Bulgaria. 

Valeri Simeonov literally talked about creating modern concentration camps, and in 2016, when speaking of Bulgaria’s Roma minority, he told the parliament: “They are brazen, feral, human-like creatures that demand pay without work, and collect sickness benefits without being sick. They receive child benefits for children that play with pigs on the street, and for women that have the instincts of stray dogs.” His party has literally called for the demolition of “Gypsy ghettos” and for Roma to be instead isolated in closed reservations that could “generate income as tourist attractions”

Asides from this Ilian Todorov from the far-right ATAKA party (ultranationalist, racist, especially antisemitic and anti-Roma, xenophobic, especially anti-Muslim and anti-Turkish) is now Bulgaria, Sofia’s regional governor. 

The opposition party, Yes Bulgaria, warned that this “toxic national-populism” can only divide society and “heighten the risk of stirring up ethnic enmity” when we have already long gone past the “risk” stage as proven by recent submissions of the European Roma Rights Center and the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee – Both reports detail recent violent events which include mass attempts to storm Roma neighbourhoods, an increase in hate speech, failures by the authorities to deal properly with racially motivated hate crime, as well as incidents such as the brutal assault in April by police of a Romani father and son outside the village of Bohot in Pleven province. The son sustained serious injuries, but his father died at the scene of this assault. The authorities justified the police action by claiming that the men were found in possession of stolen pesticides and had resisted arrest.

The former vice-deputy of the ATAKA party, went on TV to praise the police for “neutralising the two thieves,” for sending a clear message, and spreading the kind of fear that will cause “all crooks and thieves to lay down.”

The situation of Roma in Bulgaria is worsening. And if those events listed are not enough already Roma are still racially segregated in education and housing, being forcefully evicted and having their properties demolished as well.

My, what day! :D Today, on the 30th of June, which is also Everything-Day in Pride Month, the parliament of Germany has passed a law that brings us the “marriage for everyone” which means in the future gay couples will be able to get married in Germany! So far we had a thing that allowed homosexual couples to get “married” that was in most (but not all) parts equal to marriage, but it had a different name. So here! Have a very very happy same-sex couple of Europasauruses from the Langenberg-formation in Goslar, Germany!! I didn’t want to make up a sexual dimorphism so it’s for you to decide whether these are two beefy boys or two beefy girls or anything else, it’s marriage for everyone after all! :-) Happy Everything-Day!
