This week the West Midlands was labelled “the nation’s gun crime capital” as figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that the region now has a higher rate of firearms offences for its population than London.
The figures, which are hotly disputed by senior officers, have brought unwelcome attention to a region that still bears the scars of high-profile shootings stretching back over a decade. Full story »
Teetotallers on rise in the UK as one in five don't drink
More than one in five British adults (21%) do not drink alcohol at all, up from 19% in 2005, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Those aged 16-24 were primarily responsible for the change, with the proportion of young adults who said they do not drink alcohol at all rising by over 40% between 2005 and 2013. Full story »
How the measles outbreak spreads when kids get vaccinated – and when they don’t
Measles is back in the US – and it’s spreading. More than 100 cases across 14 states and Washington DC have been confirmed by US health officials since an outbreak began at Disneyland last December.

Antisemitic attacks in UK at highest level ever recorded
Reports of violence, property damage, abuse and threats against members of Britain’s Jewish population more than doubled last year.
“Last year’s large increase in recorded incidents shows just how easily antisemitic attitudes can erupt into race-hate abuse, threats and attacks,” said David Delew, chief executive of the Community Security Trust.
Global unemployment forecast to hit 212m by 2019
The “global economy has entered a new period combining slower growth, widening inequalities and turbulence" says the International Labour Organisation.
More than 61m jobs have been lost since the start of the global economic crisis. To close this gap an additional 280m jobs need to be created by 2019.
This is how the next UK parliament would look, based on the polls.
Labour and the Conservatives are neck-and-neck and would have to create a multi-party alliance to form a stable government. Both are projected to win a total of 273 seats, 56 short of the 326 needed for a majority.
If the US election was played out on Twitter, Obama would win by a landslide!
