Sonyaâs eyes followed the boy as he sat beside her on the park bench.
âYou never showed upâŚâ Henry began slowly. She gulped. He was just the person sheâd been trying her best to avoid.

Sonya felt herself shrink. This wasnât the first time sheâd stood Henry up, but missing his piano recital was probably the last straw. For months, that piano recital was all heâd been talking about.
âI promise Iâll make it up to you. I just-â She pleaded.
âForgot.â Henry finished. She could hear the hint of frustration in his voice, and it seemed heâd caught it too, his expression softening, brows furrowing, as if it were wrong for him to be so upset.
After years of being Henryâs friend, she didnât think sheâd ever seen him get angry before.
But it wasnât wrong, was it? Sonya knew she was mostly to blame for the two drifting apart, and Henry had every right to be upset.
âDid I ever matter?â
Her words fell silent.
She looked at him as if heâd taken a blunt knife and forced it through her chest. Of course.
She closed her eyes. She shouldâve been mad at him for even saying something like that, but she could never bring herself to be mad at Henry.
Because he mattered. He mattered too much.
And there was so much pain that went into just being around him. But the more she tried to push him from her mind, the more she thought of him. Because falling for your friend was painful when youâd never being more than just friends.
She opened her mouth to speak, but the words wouldnât come. She hoped that Henry would lean forward to brush away the tears that were now sliding down her cheeks, like raindrops on a car in motion. But he just sat there. A soft gray blur.

Letâs get a couple of things straight, shall we? Iâm the standard of perfection in here. You, on the other hand⌠just because weâre sort of friends doesnât mean my perfection automatically rubs off on you. Iâm sorry, Sonya, it just doesnât work out that way.Â
