The evening had been an extensive but enjoyable one, the rebels surrounded in a warmth created by their own celebrations. They'd drank, they'd laughed, they'd danced. Beck's body cried out with fatigue as a result, but the alcohol kept her up, still swaying lazily to the music. She wasn't done just yet. Despite having spent the majority of the night gossiping with her girlfriends about him, she hadn't actually seen Matt all that much, which was wasteful. The suit he was wearing was made to be appreciated. Before being tossed onto the floor, obviously. Finding him amongst the crowd, Beck gently tapped his arm to alert him of her presence, before leaning in for the kiss. "Hi," she mumbled, lips pressing softly against his skin. "Ready to take me home?"
âOh,â Henry replied, startled out of his thoughts, realising he was being spoken to. Heâd been pretending not to watch her thumb through their precious new collection as he stacked and tidied shelves, all while itching to say something. She was gorgeous, obviously, but he couldnât get past the irritation she was causing him, not liking the way the pages bent under her fingers. But he managed to keep his mouth shut, knowing he was being too particular. âYeah, itâs pretty great, I agree. I should pass on the thanks to the suppliers, maybe theyâll- sorry, can I just ââ Unable to stop himself, Henry suddenly reached out, nearly slamming her fingers shut within the pages in the process. A beat later, he realised what heâd done. Embarrassed, he quickly let go. âUm.. yikes. Sorry about that.â
He cleared his throat, unsure how to come back from that, but trying nonetheless. âThatâs a good choice you got there. Room, right? You havenât read it before?â
Beck flinched heavily at his sudden intrusion, only maintaining her grip on the book due to her fingers clenching in fear. She stepped back, which'd probably seem to be an overreaction, but it was an automated trauma response, an act of instinct. She was unsure what she'd done to irritate him, and although he'd immediately apologised, Beck remained on edge anyway, not wanting to do it again. "Oh it's â it's fine," she attempted to laugh, but the noise came out staggered and nervous, failing to mask her unease.
Beck was unsure whether to place the book down and leave, but he continued the conversation by questioning her, so she then felt stunted. Sometimes, fleeing was worse. "Uh... no, I haven't. Have you?" She attempted to keep the breath out of her speech, wanting to appear normal. Hopefully, she'd misread this situation entirely. "You can keep it, if you want."
Simon sighed, both in relief and frustration, too worked up to notice her eyes on him. âWell, I gotta say, thatâs a relief,â he laughed, nervous energy radiating from him in waves. âThat sucks, though. It looks crazy in here tonight.â All the more reason for him to leave. âI⊠am?â He sounded unsure, then shook his head, then nodded. âYes. Yeah, I am. I thought, maybe â theyâd want something live, I donât know. Itâs an acoustic. Iâm totally out of practice, though. And am not great at requests, which I feel may be popular with this crowd,â he muttered, glancing around. âI should just.. come back another time.â
"It's always crazy in here at the weekend. This town isn't exactly full of places to socialise, so we pack ourselves in here like ants," Beck teased, taking a sip of the drink she'd ordered earlier. It was already making her feel lightheaded, but it helped with her confidence. This guy could certainly use a shot of it. "Oh come on, you're giving up way too easily. You can't know how they'll react until you give it a try, and it's better than everyone sitting here with no music. Stop thinking of reasons why not, and remind yourself why you came here with your guitar in the first place." Beck smiled in encouragement, gesturing towards the bar. "Go, ask. I'll stay here and cheer you on."
Matt heard her move toward him, tilting his head as he listened closer, inhaled deeply, trying to find the missing piece. Something had happened, something was wrong, and he couldnât place it. How had he not noticed she wasnât okay? It had to be purely emotional, something recent. Something of the mind. Her fear and sadness was palpable, and Matt frowned at her dismissal, his hand lifting to press against the door, as if feeling her through it. âBeckâŠâ He sighed, trailing off, trying to find the right words, when he heard her crying.
Immediately, the sound itched at his skin, squeezed his heart, heated his blood. Someone had caused this, and he had to know who. He wouldâve respected her space, had she not been so clearly lying, so palpably upset. Jaw set now, chin lifting, he tried again, tone more insistent. He could help her, he knew he could. âBaby, please open the door. Just - I want to see you. I want to help.â He paused. âWhatever it is, weâll work it out together, okay? You just have to let me in.â
The silence between them lingered as Beck had an internal debate with herself, unsure of whether to follow her heart or her head. But the more her heart persisted, the closer to Matt she became. Her fingers reached out, settling on the door handle, still stunted in hesitation. He was right, though. He could help her, even in a way that surpassed emotional consolation. Matt had legal knowledge, and she had teased the idea upon their first meeting that she'd confide in him one day if she needed advice. She just hadn't imagined the truth being forced out of her by Joe's reappearance, or for it to become a potential obstacle in their relationship. Beck realised then that she had no choice, suppression was no longer an option. If this was to work long term, she had to be honest about her past; otherwise she risked losing her future. Matt was never intended to be her distraction, he was her salvation. Her heart won out.
After a heavy breath, Beck twisted the knob and pulled the door open, still appreciating the vision of him even through her watery eyes. "I'm sorry," she sniffled, unmoved, waiting for him to make way inside. "I didn't want you to be a part of this. But I'm scared, Matt. And I have no idea what to do."
âYeah, why not? It seems like youâve got a lot to teach, and Iâm always willing to learn. I almost never missed class.â He shrugged nonchalantly before settling into another pose, his words intentionally suggestive. âBut that sounds fair. Iâm a businessman, I get it. Whatever the price is, Iâll pay it.â
âCouldnât have said it better myself,â he smiled, finding it humorous she couldnât know how right she was. When Matt had lost his sight, he never thought heâd do anything again, let alone do what he was capable of today. Adapting had not just been key to his survival, but his personality. At her next question, Matt laughed, trying to be honest but not wanting to let too much slip. âHonestly, Iâm not sure. I suppose something could pop up, but nothing Iâve prepared for.â Matt, of course, had been expecting her touch, having sensed it coming, but heâd become a pro at acting; had to be if he was to keep up appearances. So, he jerked his arm a little, as if surprised by the contact, but didnât pull away, instead shifting weight onto his other arm so he could turn his hand over and trace the underside of hers in return. âBeck, I would like nothing more,â he replied with a smile that was inching towards a smirk, tilting his chin upward in confidence. Matt climbed to his feet without removing his hand, though adjusted it slightly to hold hers instead. âLead the way.â
âI was definitely kidding,â Beck replied, smirk upturning the corners of her lips. âAnd anyway, the first session is free of charge. But maybe we can work out a deal, if you like it.â She paused in thought for a moment, before realising they were already on the topic. It was the perfect opportunity to continue her teasing. âOne yoga lesson in exchange for a boxing lesson.â Not that sheâd be any good, in fact sheâd most likely be terrible, but sheâd certainly enjoy seeing him in action. âThat way you can practice, in case that thing comes up.â
Beckâs cheeks reddened as Matt moved to stand, her attention drawn to their interlocked fingers. Despite how quick they were progressing, he was still a gentleman, and she couldnât help but feel flustered by that fact. Luckily, they werenât far from her home, so it wouldnât take long to lead him there.Â
After the short walk, they approached her door, and she showed no hesitation in bringing him in, and shutting it behind them both. Beckâs stomach turned with a giddiness she hadnât felt in months, surprised by her own level of trust and excitement. Alexandria was good for her, and clearly Mattâs presence was, too. âSo, should I get the matâŠÂ or?â She resisted the urge to kiss him, wanting him to make the first move. Her greatest desire was to be wanted, so if he could show her that, sheâd know it was the right decision.Â
Considering how easy Matt found the exercises, he had no issue picking up on the gradual growth in tension between them as they went on. He didnât need sight to sense she was interested, unable to stop himself from smiling when flirtatious words backed up his suspicions. âOr I just have a really good teacher,â he countered, appreciating the warm feeling that ran through him. Matt had always enjoyed the company of women, but if he had taken next steps with them, they hadnât been just anyone. The man was famously loyal, and liked to keep his attention on one thing at a time. If the chemistry between them was destined to grow any more, heâd be sure to see it through properly.
âI donât,â he sighed in admittance. âI grew up in the ring, and stretching wasnât really a thing, let me tell you. But I'm always open to criticism, especially if you think itâll help me win.â Not that there were any boxing competitions he knew about going on around here, but they could help in any fight, nonetheless. âFeeling the stretch, check,â Matt confirmed, head tilted down, following her instructions. The tone between them hadnât shifted, and as fun as he found the teasing, he knew how to take things to the next level. âDo you think there are any moves we could try together?â
âIs that what I am now?â Beck teased, moving into the next position. She certainly liked the sound of it, anyway. âIn that case, this lesson is going to cost you. I donât teach for free.â She hadnât instructed anyone since the move to Alexandria, and a while before that, but perhaps she could look into it now sheâd settled. This session had certainly worked out in her favour, and the extra income was always useful. Not that sheâd actually charge Matt, but she was certain there were a few others rebels who could use a healthy relaxation method.Â
âWell, you know what they say. You have to adapt to win,â she smiled, wondering if sheâd get to see him in action one day. âDo you think youâll have another fight any time soon?â Beck couldnât deny her curiosity, especially in regards to his blindness. She wondered how he worked that to be an advantage, instead of something that held him back. His confidence clearly aided him, too, proved by his next question. Beck shouldnât have been so surprised, considering her own flirting, but she was glad to find it paying off. She smirked as she leaned closer, grazing his hand with the tips of her fingers. âI can think of⊠a few. But we canât do them without the equipment. Do you wannaâ head back to my place?â
