My bother won't have anywhere to go except for toxic households or on the street if we aren't able to get him to CO from CA by the end of next month! I'm trying all I can with my work, but know I'll need extra help to make it after such sudden news...

Kind of says most of it… We don’t have everything settled yet and I want him to come with us where he’d be safer, but in the end it’s up to him.

HOWEVER, I’m still going to need to suddenly hop out back to CA either way to get the rest of my stuff since they will no longer have a storage unit! 8′)

Time is of the essence here. We have till the end of Feb 29th to get all their shit out (tho I’d like to before then) and I want to be out there helping them as much as I can without totally hurting our funds that we’re needing to save rn……

Dillon Hutchens Help me avoid eviction & get a new apartment I have been having issues with my roommate for a number of months now. Last Apr

My former roommate has essentially screwed me over and managed to get my apartment into eviction(he wasn’t paying his half of the rent and didn’t tell me) status about a month before I was gonna move out to get a new place. If said eviction happens, I won’t be able to get a new place with that on my record.

I have until the 17th to come up with a little over $2000(because I don’t trust him to come up with the money). I can’t take out a loan because he did the same thing four months ago and I’m still paying that off.

Deer were the cause in this specific case, but if any predator disappears their primary prey will have a population explosion, which will at a minimum destroy that prey animal’s food source and lead to sickness and starvation in anything else that eats it.

Wolves have been hunted to extinction in the British Isles, Japan, and essentially everywhere else that humans were capable of finding them all. They remain a huge part of literature and traditional culture in those places, but there was just no place on an island for a wolf to hide and humans worked hard to eliminate them out of fear.

In mainland Europe and Asia a few of them managed to hide out in inhospitable places, leading to modern populations with 2-3 digits is most countries, but the total eurasian wolf population is only around 16,000 outside of Russia, And even after all the modern efforts to protect them and reintroduce them to their old territories there are only about 6,000 wolves in the americas south of the canadian border.

The only places wolves were allowed to continue living were the places too cold and too vast for humanity to control: 25-30 thousand in Russia, 60 thousand across Canada, and 12 thousand in Alaska.

Used to be even 10-15 years ago there would be patches of sidewalk next to gardens that sometimes you couldn’t walk on once in a while because they were just covered in butterflies sunning themselves between trips to the flowers.

Like there were times I would walk past some spots and it’d be like a movie with this wave of small butterflies that would fly up, disturbed by my passing.

Used to see lots of fireflies, too.

Now it’s a rare treat to see multiple butterflies at once, and lightning bugs are much fewer and far between.

It’s sad.

Y’know what’s funny?

I’m a grassland ecologist. I am intimately familiar with the collapse of insect populations – part of my earliest research was on the impact of insect population declines on grassland birds (it’s bad, fam).

But I never connected the way I can now drive ten hours across the prairies without needing to clean my windshield with said declines until I sat in on a native bees workshop last week, and the speaker pointed out the change.

So you know. That’s concerning. I drove across Canada last fall and just realized that I only had to stop and clean the windshield once.

If you want to help, here are some things you can do for bugs in general:

- The Xerces Society is a primarily US-based non-profit dedicated to conserving invertebrates; they support research, and run a lot of public outreach events, including seminars and citizen science projects. They could use your dollars or your time.

- get involved with your local naturalist or conservation society; there are a heck-ton of these that are often linked to specific areas or watersheds, and they can always use help (in AB there’s the Alberta Native Bee Council, for example)

- cut out pesticides in your garden; a significant part of this decline is related to the fact that pesticides kill indiscriminately, and have a tendency to travel long distances from the point of application

- plant native species; insects (especially butterflies and other pollinators) are often specialized on native species for food or shelter, and without these native species they don’t do as well even if they can use another non-native plant

- if at all possible, reduce or eliminate lawn space; in ecological terms, well-kept grass lawns are only slightly better than concrete - they don’t provide habitat or food to most species. if you absolutely have to have a lawn, see if you can swap it for another ground-cover (preferably a native species). if you have to have a lawn-lawn, leave it as long as you’re allowed - longer grass at least provides habitat for some species (especially leave it long as you go into winter and wait as long as you can to cut in the spring - overwintering habitat is critical).

- if you can, don’t rake up your fall leaves. If you have to rake them up, store them in open bags or spread them on flower beds until spring - lots of baby bugs spend the winter under those leaves.

- build a bug hotel; if you’re in a cold climate (like Canada), make sure it’s at least 8-12″ deep so that things can overwinter.

This is being called the insect apocalypse. I remember as a kid in summer clouds of fireflies so thick that even with the moon not out you could see your surroundings. Now I'm lucky to see one or two a night.

Pollen Supplement Patty Recipe

Happy Monday!

Pollen Pattys are a great way to help our busy bees, because they need more than the carbs from honey and sugar to survive. By setting out pollen patties in your apiaries, hives (or simply in your backyard, on a ledge near flowers!) is a great way to help pollinators get the nutrition they need during their travels.

Ingredients:

0.125 kg pollen (200 ml or 0.8 c) 

0.625 kg hot water (815 ml or 2.6 c.) 

1.25 kg sugar (1.4 l or 5.6 c.) 

1.0 kg brewer’s yeast (1.5 l or 6.3c.) (+ up to125g or 225ml more yeast)

Instructions: 

Mix dry ingredients together. Then add dry mix slowly to syrup/honey until mixture is like stiff bread dough. Press between wax paper. Place bee patty over cluster with wax paper up.

According to the following source, “The top of the cake must be covered with waxed paper to prevent dehydration and hardening of the patty. The inner cover, when used, should be inverted with rim side down to provide space for the cake. New cakes should be added before the previous cakes are consumed. Feeding patties at seven to ten day intervals is generally satisfactory.”

One thing Id like to add...don't put these in a hive in summer if you have small hive beetles...they love this stuff and will lay their eggs in it and make a mess for the bees....winter and spring is okay though cause they don't breed then!

It is Spring in the Northern Hemisphere! Even more good news is that the bee population has actually been climbing back up and they have been doing very well this year so far!

Which means you are more likely to see an increase of honeybee activity! Especially if you live near any open fields, orchards, or even just a lot of flowering plants!

When a new queen is born into a hive and becomes mature, she takes a lot of workers with her to find a new hive! But the queens are somewhat fat and not very strong fliers! So they stop and rest while scouts find a new spot for a hive! This is called swarming and looks something like this!

This is NOT a hive! If you see this behavior in bees, rest assured that they will likely be gone within the next few days once they find a spot for their hive! They don’t want to be there any more than you want them to be!

Sometimes they pick very inconvenient spots to swarm and understandably you want them gone as soon as possible! Luckily there is a humane way if removing them is your only option!

Call your local apiaries (beekeepers) and ask what options they have for humane swarm removal! Many pest control companies also have a humane option to transport a swarm to an apiary!

(About apiaries: Kept bees are actually very healthy and well taken care of and their contribution actually made a great impact in restoring the honeybee population!)

Remember to be good to our hard working little sisters! Don’t panic if you see a swarm, they will be gone before you know it!

And if I catch you hurting a swarm… bees will be the least of your problems!

Hey, y’all remember like two years ago when I said I’d do a giveaway soon? not exactly “soon” but here it is!

Tho for real I never thought I’d get so many people who enjoy my stuff and I’m finally doing a giveaway for y’all!

I’ve also put a screenshot of my commission rules from my site to make things convenient for y’all, the only rule I’m going to change for this is that you must have a picture reference of the character you want, a written description alone is not enough. Another general rule that I just keep forgetting to put on there is no real people.
