Grab 11 minutes worth of popcorn and chips and enjoy! We hope you like it! Feel free to share your feedback!
MichMar&Mes Productions present... GWEN! Here's an unofficial movie poster Gracey illustrated and designed! We've already screened our video in class, but we're currently in the process of adjusting the sound and making a blooper reel for y'all! The wait is almost over! :)
This is a glass blue bird that Marissa's grandmother owns and we thought it was a perfect prop for some of the scenes considering how fond Gwen is of birds.
We tried to make this little guy appear in as many scenes as subtly as possible. But SHH! It's our little secret.
"That's a wrap!"
It's been a hectic and stressful yet rewarding gong-show of a month filming Braedon and Katherine! We've been in post for a few days already, but it's been a rollercoaster of emotions to get here.
Murphy's Law has played a huge part during filming because everything that could go wrong essentially did. We knew what we were getting into needing to film in so many locations to get the footage we wanted, but we've now learned to expect the worst.
Note: we're not complaining, we're just sharing our filming journey :)
Sound was the worst. The RODE blimp mic was always booked when we needed it to film outdoors, which left us with the Zoom H4N and the shotgun mic to capture sound. Not ideal, but thankfully we have Michelle who took a class in sound design.
Oh, Vancouver weather, so unpredictable. There were countless times we've had to reschedule filming because of rain.
Scheduling was surprisingly difficult considering we're a small group. Work conflicts would cut our days short, upcoming auditions for our talented actors would cancel a shoot, and at one point Katherine had tonsillitis :(
Renting equipment at our school library was a war zone, especially during weekends, so we learned the hard way to book equipment in advance. A filming day had to be cut short because of equipment shortage, like in one instance we didn't have a lighting kit.
At this moment in time, we have all our scenes cut, but it definitely wasn't easy getting to this point, but we're so happy to have survived!
Keep checking in for some teasers leading up to our official video link :)
Character profile for Gwen
We channelled inspiration for our character from Margot Tenenbaum of The Royal Tenenbaums played by Gwyneth Paltrow. We just loved her stoic and non-enthused demeanour and wanted to inject some of those qualities into our Gwen. For our Jordan, unfortunately, we didn't have a solid idea of how he would be, but as long as the chemistry between him and Gwen worked we were happy to work with anyone. Luckily, when we auditioned Braedon, we knew he was a great fit!
We are so stoked to show what we've been working on for the past few months. Stay tuned!
A little (almost candid) photo album of the crew in our element!
Katherine is in character even when she's at Starbucks, ha! We wonder what Gwen would order...
Days Two + Three.
Our lovely actress, Katherine Ramdeen on the 'Gwen' set! And by set, we mean Marissa's grandmother's house.
If you want a great Canadian actress with range, who's fun and effortless to work with, and with her own killer wardrobe, hire her and support BC film!
Quick teaser clip of Gwen and Jordan at Rocanini!
Day One of filming 'Gwen'! Again, we stuck with Rocanini cafe in Steveston to film one of our scenes with Katherine and Braedon Cox! Shout out to Frank the Manager, who was so gracious to let us use his beautiful space!
It was an early morning (for us at least), but we wanted to work with the great morning lighting and avoid the rush hour traffic of patrons. Katherine went out of her way to borrow a book about South American birds from the VPL. And we thought we couldn't love her more! And we're so grateful for Braedon, who's busy with other projects and work, and we know he's not a morning person.
Audio again was an issue as we couldn't get the RODE blimp microphone (due to booking conflicts at our equipment library), but our shotgun and lavalier mics were able to capture a few good tidbits. However, we're going to have to do some voiceovers.
A teaser video to come!
Here's a small unedited piece of footage of Michelle as Gwen, reading a book. Can you tell what the story is about from this?
Also, let us know if you have any feedback or advice regarding filming outside!
We were so caught up on filming on Monday, that we weren't able to capture a lot of photos, but we did get a ton of rehearsal video.
Marissa's grandma was so gracious to let us use her home to film in and the first picture is of Michelle and I (in the mirror) in the bathroom shooting for one of the scenes (sorry, no spoilers). The one below is of Marissa on a bench in Queen Elizabeth park letting us use her to frame a shot.
A video to come!
Shout out to Rocanini cafe for letting us film in their beautiful space!
We just finished a couple weeks of filming rehearsal footage and intense script-editing. These are some pictures of a morning spent in Steveston testing out some shots. Braedon, who is playing Jordan had joined us for the day. So excited for him to be on board with us (and thanks for waking up early to do so)! Michelle is only filling in for Katherine, who is playing our Gwen.
The lighting was perfect, but the audio was horrendous. We realized we brought the wrong audio recording device and had to settle for shitty sound in our rehearsal editing. Nothing like a lesson learned! Speaking of, we're open to feedback and tips for filming, lighting, audio, post-production, etcetera! Feel free to contact us here.
Us "Gwen sisters" are hanging out and being silly in the green room at school today. We're helping each other out for our individual video projects and getting in some more camera + lighting practice.
Last week, we took some photos of possible locations to film our video. Our protagonist is supposed to (1) jog and (2) lay out in the sun for a couple scenes, so we're hoping for the weather to improve once we officially start filming!
Also, great news... we have officially casted our two main characters! It was a difficult decision to make. And it wasn't easy for us to turn away such talented people, but we're so glad to have found our perfect "Gwen" and "Jordan". We can't wait to start rehearsal, but first: script revision, reiterate our storyboards, and take a few more photos.
For the past two days, we held auditions to cast our Gwen and Jordan, and we must say, Vancouver is brimming with talent! It's been rather difficult for us to choose someone, so it's caused us to call for a second round of auditions.
Right now we're revising our script, redrawing our storyboards, and preparing to take some location photographs. We're so stoked to see our project progressing.
