Rocanini Coffee Roasters
Rocanini Coffee Roasters has been around for a little while now. They have two locations - a roasting facility in Vancouver (Mount Pleasant area), and a huge cafe out in Steveston. I've been to Rocanini's roasting facility for a Yelp meetup, and it was pretty cool to see their process. It's not a cafe though, so the space isn't designed for you to stick around and work on your laptop or anything like that. [caption id="attachment_1977" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Pour over coffee[/caption] In contrast, the Steveston location of Rocanini Coffee Roasters is a full service cafe. [caption id="attachment_3474" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Steveston location[/caption] The Steveston location has a beautiful interior - plenty of seating space and huge windows for natural light. [caption id="attachment_3466" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Siphon Coffee Menu[/caption] Siphon brewing used to be a really popular method of brewing, and the process has been referred to as vacpots, vacuum brewed coffee, siphon brewer, siphon vacuum coffee, and a number of other combinations. At Rocanini, they have a nice little sheet that explains the Coffee Siphon in greater detail. [caption id="attachment_3468" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Siphon Coffee Description[/caption] If you're interested in a really full on description of the process, I recommend the article written by CoffeeGeek here. [caption id="attachment_3467" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Heating up the vessel[/caption] Beyond making a really delicious cup of coffee, the siphon brewing process looks really cool! [caption id="attachment_3470" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Siphon vessel is inserted, and the Kick Up begins soon.[/caption] The final result is a really fancy looking cup of coffee. [caption id="attachment_3471" align="aligncenter" width="625"] Fresh cup of siphon brew[/caption] Rocanini serves their Siphon Brew in the brewing apparatus so that you can pour it out yourself. I found that to be really neat, as it also kept the coffee really hot. While it looks like the amount of coffee you get is quite minimal, there was actually enough for 4 cups! Needless to say, I was a bit wired. As for the taste itself, I found it to be really smooth or "clean", similar to an Aeropressed coffee. I found myself enjoying the Siphon Brew over an Americano or French Pressed coffee. Definitely worth trying out!
