A Year to the Day || Dorcas & Gwenog
Dorcas walked around the bookstore her father had left to her, trying to get everything ready for her to reopen it in another week. She’d moved herself into the flat upstairs only days after getting back from Hogwarts and since then, she’d failed to leave the place for very long. The newly graduated girl seemed to have gone from studying for her NEWTs straight to trying to run a business and while she enjoyed keeping busy, she found herself missing her father dearly. It was a year to the day that her father had died. He’d been walking to the home that her mother had since sold, from the bookshop Dorcas now lived above. She could feel tears pricking her eyes at the thought.
After making sure that everything was dusted and the books were all stacked on the shelves in a neat and organized fashion, just as he’d taught her, the girl allowed herself a break. Silently sitting down in one of the armchairs that she’d placed in the store, she allowed herself to grieve for her dad once again, wondering if the pain of her loss would ever go away. And at that moment, the door at the front of the store opened, Sherlock, the owl she’d also inherited from her father, hooted from his post in the back room. She must have forgotten to lock the front door when she’d come back from getting groceries earlier. “S-Sorry, we’re closed.” Doe managed to say, wiping her tears as she stood to see who’d come into the shop.
Gwen walked through London, watching the people around her hurrying around in their lunchbreak. It was nice to have nothing to do, she'd become so used to the constant studying that it was almost weird not to have to worry about it anymore. She'd been invited to a few Quidditch team tryouts and had spent the morning out in the countryside practising. She was supposed to be visiting her mum that afternoon but she was trying to put that off for as long as possible.
She turned a corner and recognised the bookstore that Dorcas had been telling her about. She was in no hurry to get to her mum's so she walked up to the building and pushed open the door. She heard an owl hoot as she walked into the shop and saw Dorcas sitting in an armchair by one of the shelves. "Oh, I know, I just came to see you, Doe." She saw that Dorcas had been crying and immediately felt like she'd intruded. "I can come back another time if now isn't good.
`”Either this is a total surprise, or I’m blanking on the part where I invited you over.”
Surprise! I was bored and you live the closest.
Dogs are really cute. They’re like man’s best friend, you know.
I know, I absolutely love dogs. But we already have two dogs and my stepmom absolutely refuses to keep a third. So do you want it? He's really, really cute.
Some drunk man knocked on our door at three in the morning and left his dog outside our door. Who wants a new pet? He seems sort of friendly.

It is sad, but it’s my favorite book. No, I haven’t. I’m afraid I don’t know who Kate Bush is either.
It's great but I think Pride and Prejudice is probably my favourite, after Quidditch Through the Ages of course! You don't know who Kate Bush is? Oh she's this amazing singer, you should listen to her if you ever get the chance!

Thank you Gwen, really. It’s very sweet of you, but I’ll be okay. What I really need is to read Wuthering Heights again, that usually makes me feel a bit better. Maybe I’ll start get it out later tonight.
Oh I love Wuthering Heights! The romance of it all, it's so sad. Did you hear the song Kate Bush released about it last year?
Hestia glanced over at Gwen and let out a breath of relief. She wrapped her arms around her cousin and pulled her into a tight hug. “Me? What about you? I was worried.”
*She hugged Hestia back tightly.* I'm fine, I just can't believe this has happened. I thought Hogwarts was supposed to be safe.
"Don't worry, I'm just being stupid."
I don’t have much of a choice, now do I. I’ve got to help the other students, it’s my responsibility.
No, it's ok I understand. I just wanted to make sure you were alright that's all. If you're helping everyone else, it's only fair that someone offers you help.

I know, I just need to get a grip. I’m supposed to have it together, helping other students, not hiding in the library trying not to bawl my eyes out. And I’m glad you’re alright too, Gwen.
I think sometimes though, you need to help yourself before you can help others. At the end of the day, if you’re not ok then are you really going to be much help to anyone else?

Hestia sank down to the floor and rested against the wall outside the hospital wing. She yawned and pinched her nose. What an awful day, she thought to her herself.
*Relief flooded through Gwen as she finally found her cousin and saw that she was safe.* Thank god you're ok. *She said, sitting down beside Hestia.*
