      “Oh, and we couldn’t have that, could we?” Gunner rolled his eyes with a slight smile. “What are you going to walk me around? Give me some water? Rub my stomach until I feel better? I’m not upset, I was just making an observation.”

Gaia snorted from behind him, her footsteps breaking crunchy leaves and twigs from under them; so it was no surprise to come up behind him. The forest was sacred - - - well, to her at least, where she could finally just… be. “I beg to differ, because I think my sunny disposition brightens up the whole town.” Gaia murmured quietly, though anyone who actually knew her would find that as a lie. 

      “Oh, it’s you.” He sighed, almost relieved that it was just Gaia. At least he wouldn’t be forced to ‘act chipper’ or any other bullshit. Gaia, he knew, wasn’t going to lecture him on finding the bright side or something equally irritating. “Yeah, you and your sunny disposition just make the entire day better. Just sit down and stop trying to be cute.” He moved over slightly to let her sit next to him.

“Don’t thank me,” the mechanic replied, a thin smirk spreading on his lips. “I’m always happy to spread my amazing wisdom thoughts,” he added with a chuckle.

“So, what’s the matter kid? You sound lost.”

     “You should charge for that.” Gunner said with a watery smile. “Lost? Is that what they’re calling it these days? I guess that’s a good word for it.” He gave a shrug, not really sure if there was anything really the matter specifically.

What was she meant to say to him? It mattered to her, he mattered to her, and what he thought mattered. Elena sighed looking at her feet, it was stupid asking questions that would lead no where. “I suppose it doesn’t, why were you thinking about how depressing the town as though?”

      “It’s just something that crosses my mind.” He murmured quietly. There wasn’t much more to it than that.

Elena felt like a child dreaming of better places, looking through the world with rose-colored glasses. “Being prepared doesn’t mean we need to be miserable in the process.” Her eyes looked over at the back of him, “I just - don’t know if I should stay here forever. It’s not like I’m of any help while I am here.” However, she wasn’t sure she could leave. She had an obligation to stay, even if she was no help. Mostly though, she didn’t want to make her guardian’s trail after her. Not when they’d made friends, and possible families. “Would you stay here? If you didn’t have anyone to watch over, would you stay here by choice?”

      Gunner stalled in answering her because he wasn’t sure how to tell her the answer was yes. How could he tell her that he didn’t want to be here? There was nothing personal in it against Elena, but if he had the option of going or staying, Gunner would rather drift through the world until he died than stay shackled here. “Does it matter? Fact is that I’m here. I don’t like focusing on would be’s and could have’s. That doesn’t make me feel any better.”

“Never go to a bigger town then,” Edgar found that small towns where everyone knew each other else felt much more comforting than those gigantic cities of strangers. Of course it was harder when it came to say good bye, but the memories he kept from these places were usually fonder than those he had of Atlantic City, or Chicago, for example.

      “Thanks for that all ready noted wealth of information.” Gunner sighed out, spreading his legs wider and propping his elbows on his knees. There was something nice about the thought of getting lost in a city, but there wasn’t much that made him actually want to leave Oak Pines for a place like that. He’d grown up in a quiet life and he wanted to keep that.

“Tell me about it.” muttered the witch as she walked up to the dhampir. Allegra greeted him with a warm smile, even though she agreed with his condescending statement. She returned her attention to her task and took a few steps towards some herbs to inspect them. Once she realized that they were what she was looking for, she gently plucked them out of the ground before placing them in her basket. After what happened with Juni, she needed a distraction and so consuming herself with work and being one with her element were ways of doing so. “With tourist season coming up, I doubt it’ll be depressing for the new comers. Must be nice to be in their shoes.” 

      Gunner’s gaze fell on her smile, but he didn’t return it. His face stayed as blank as before she’d made herself known. He grunted in acknowledgement, not verbally answering her further than that as he wasn’t sure what he wanted to say or that he needed to say anything at all. He didn’t want to have some deep and intimate conversation about the hardships of life or the horrors of their town. Gunner wanted to be alone and while he knew of Allegra, had seen her once or twice, they weren’t close and he felt he didn’t owe her a conversation.

Though it was a small gesture, it was nice to have any comfort. Letting her hand press against his slightly. She knew she shouldn’t push her luck with Gunner, it was nice for the contact she got. “I don’t want to believe that. This place is a beacon for supernatural, and with everyone in this small town it’s no wonder so much is happening. I just want to run away and find some place where there isn’t the fear of everything.”

      “Well, you’re going to have to be prepared for it, Elena.” He hadn’t looked at her yet, eyes still trained on the expanse of trees before him. His voice was soft, almost tentative as he spoke because he feared scaring her. “There could be better places, but if there aren’t, you need to be prepared for that.”
