My Introduction Post!!!

Hello, everyone! I'm Garnet Skyesor, 21 years old, and my dream is to become a Gym Leader in my home region of Hoenn! I'm . . . not entirely sure how to GET there yet, but I'm doing my best to figure it out!

Back when I was 13, I did the Gym Challenge here in Hoenn, and actually got all the badges! I never ended up going to the league, though . . . it just didn't work out. But I made a lot of friends along the way, who've stayed with me all these years!

My squad is:

Skipper the Swampert, my awesome starter. He's a pretty calm guy, but helped carry me hard.

Endeavor the Gardevoir, the absolute QUEEN. She will not hesitate to mess you up if you mess with my guys.

Linear the Linoone, I originally named him Ziz but then realized "wait that's kinda stupid" and he agreed so we changed it. He's pretty good at helping me navigate out in the wild!

Quartz the Sableye, she's a bit odd but pretty fun. I didn't use her much during the Gym Challenge, but she was still pretty helpful!

Tory the Torkoal and Elec the Manectric--these two are actually parents to the wonderful Tory Jr, also a Torkoal! Tory is a fairly calm and wise mother, while Elec is a fun-loving energetic father. Tory Jr is fairly stubborn but sweet, and likes to follow me around.

Grassel the Wynaut, named after my old Math Teacher. He (my teacher) really liked making puns, so I named this silly little lad in his honor.

Amy the Skarmory, my super-fast flyer and a pretty dependable messenger! She's pretty sharp, like her feathers, but also really silly.

Minos the (SHINY!) Tauros, who I found on a short trip to Kanto about a year after my gym run. He's surprisingly silly for a Tauros, but we all enjoy his company, and he likes to help give me rides when I need it.

Matcha the Sinistcha, a newcomer to the team who I adopted from @ghost-pokemon-appreciator. She's a lot of fun so far, and she sounds pretty interested in joining my Gym Team! I'm still getting to know her, though.

Neutron the Mimikyu, a little guy received from mystery gift via @ask-games-galore! He is adorable and I love him and he's dressed as a Plusle/Minun and he's so CUTE AAAAAAA!!!

Elise the Froslass, a very fine lady adopted from @the-daycare-pokecenter! She's very charming, and seems very excited to battle on my team.

Lola the Luvdisc, hatched from an egg from @pokenursery! She's a very happy little fish and deserves just as much love as her heart-shaped body conveys.

Elias the Minccino, hatched from an egg I got anonymously! He's a darling little man, and has taken to everyone quite well and tries to keep things tidy.

They're all silly guys, but I love them, and they all seem willing to help me figure out how to reach this dream of mine!

Okay. I've looked at several papers, I traveled back to Blueberry Academy for a week, I did all the research I was allowed or had access to and it's just clear. While most Pokémon can form a stable ecosystem within the four biomes of the Terrarium, Minior population cannot reasonably be sustained under normal circumstances within the Bio-dome of the Terrarium.

Minior normally form in high altitudes of the atmosphere, where dust and other particles gather together and build up their cores and rocky exterior. Depending on what elements constitute the dust they consume, their core color changes.

Curiously, contrary to popular belief, this doesn't influence their Shiny Factor, Shiny Minior are not just "black core" Minior, in the correct amount of light, it's possible to see the core color Minior would be if they didn't Shine.

Back on track. When Minior shells become too heavy from the dust they consume, or they attempt to dodge a predator Pokémon in the high atmosphere, they rain towards the ground.

Often times, this causes their shell to break upon impact, exposing Minior's highly sensitive core to the exterior.

When this happens, Minior attemp to use their floating abilities to reach back into the high atmosphere, and eventually dissolve back into dust, that will let a new Minior be born eventually.

The places where Minior can be found raining down are rare, with Mount Hokulani on the Alola Region being a notable place to find Minior, especially those with shells that have not broken after their impact.

Now, Earth's ecosystems are open systems which allow external forces to affect them, in fact the main source of energy of our planet depends on it being energetically an open system, allowing sunlight to be absorbed and reflected by our planet and serving as the basis for most bioecosystems!

Minior's life cycle likewise is an open cycle, the space dust that Earth builds up through time condenses into new Minior, regardless of the amount of them that are able to return to the atmosphere.

Even if the dust scatters across the skies, or Minior are caught in Pokéballs allowing them to reform a shell safely without disappearing, Minior populations will not decrease significantly, nor will there be a massive impact on their life cycles.

However this is not the case for the Terrarium, which is a closed system with no ability to generate space dust that can birth new Minior. And yet Minior are still able to form within the confines of the Terrarium.

And at a rate that exceeds that of natural Minior encounters in the wild (understandably so, it's impossible to compare it to natural Minior formation in the wild, as the high altitudes on which they're born makes it increasingly difficult to study them in their natural habitats.)

Despite the fact that Trainers studying in the Blueberry Academy, or visiting the Terrarium, are encouraged to catch Minior like any other Pokémon, Minior population simply doesn't go drastically down until disappearing from the Terrarium.

There weren't any concrete answers as to why this was anywhere in the Academy, so I had to do my own research on what could possibly be affecting Minior formation within the Terrarium, and I think I finally know the culprit.

The Core in the Terrarium that replicates the conditions necessary for the Terastal Phenomenon in Paldea, and Kitakami. Which allows for abnormal crystal growths containing within strong Terastalized Pokémon, that allow Pokémon to be covered in a brilliant sheen of crystals naturally, and even the generation of new kinds of Paldea's Herba Mystica.

It may be that the core which fills the terrarium dome with Terastal Energy could be creating artificial particles that allow for Minior to form, but there's still more research to be done, and the possible dangers this could bring. I think It's time I prepare for a new trip to Paldea to study the Terastal Phenomenon directly from the source.

I might even bring a new friend I met last time I went there.

not to mention OP demonstrates a total lack of understanding of the market realities of the pokéball industry- Silph and Devon are not monopolies, if they weren’t in constant competition their magic monster domination spheres wouldn’t cost two bucks a pop. the ball spec is a public standard, and Bill Masaki’s storage system based on that standard is an open-source project. they’re only the two largest players because they’re able to leverage economies of scale. you still get smaller operations like the Laverre City Poké Ball Factory, with better regional supply chains and local brand recognition, making room for themselves in the market.

Ok, but it is a shame that artisanal balls are basically off the market now. Like, you have to ride the monorail and hike through a half dozen routes just to find someone willing to sell you a Fast Ball. Believe me, when your boss at the power plant needs five Electrodes by Tuesday you are not going to want to make the trip to Alola; you’re going to head on down to the Mart and get some Ultra Balls, which will do the trick but aren’t well tailored to the job.

I’m with you that modern catching techniques are better, not to mention more humane, but there genuinely is a loss from more niche balls becoming harder to find. Maybe someday the long slowpoketail of consumer demand will be met, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for that Shellder.

look y’all are missing the point. mass production of silph balls crowding out traditional apricorn craftsmanship is, if anything, more a side effect of the real problem: that capture artifacts are too easy to get your hands on these days. $2 basic balls are a problem. before modern ball tech you had to go to an artisan, yes, but part of their job was to care about who had the power to recruit pokémon from the wild, as a backstop against another Knight of Veilstone coming along. there was a time when you’d never lay a hand on a ball yourself until it was clear you respected pokémon, whether tame or in the wild. but now, a “pokémon journey” is open to practically every teenager, even if they’ve got not interest in treating their team with trust and love.

the worldwide rise in the last century of organized crime and apocalyptic cults who use pokémon as their muscle is a direct result of capture artifacts becoming a mass produced market commodity rather than a mechanism for preserving the sacred trust between humans and the wilderness. it’s a miracle that the powder keg hasn’t already gone off by now.

Oh that is rank historical revisionism - what, do you think artisans’ definitions of “respect” were constructed in a vacuum? We already had rhetoric as far back as the warring states period in Ransei about how only the soldierly classes, overwhelmingly descendants of nobility and taught from birth, had the intangible qualities necessary to “bond” with Pokémon. And when we start seeing apricorn balls develop in Johto, which borders Kanto - Kanto, where we know there’s been extensive cultural cross-contamination with Auroran and Dragnoran expeditions - surprise, suddenly only a small population has the intangible qualities necessary to use them, too.

That notion was, and remains, a tool to limit general access to Pokémon in the interest of maintaining class disparities. I mean, have we already forgotten the Aether Foundation’s pseudo-conservationist nonsense? Their attempt to manipulate natural resources and establish a power base in Alola, while they were modernizing and taking their place on the world stage, was founded on this exact rhetoric of “rescuing” Pokémon from local disenfranchised populations, as if taking Pokémon away from places like Po Town would improve things instead of increasing competition between trainers and decreasing safety.

Artisanal balls and anyone who supports them are tools of the aristocracy to suppress the common folk. In the days when a ball could only be made by hand by an expert, only the wealthiest could afford pokemon, and as a result anyone not born into the “elites” was forced to be subservient to their “betters” for protection.

The release of the $2 pokeball meant that the balance of power shifted to the common citizens. If any child can wield the power of a god, the military and the government and the wealthiest businessmen have no power over them.

More than that, instead of power being determined by the wealth to acquire pokemon, power comes exclusively from the dedication, effort, and empathy required to train them to high levels and to maintain their loyalty. If a person simply buys their pokemon, then those pokemon will either stay at low levels forever, or refuse to obey the human because there is no respect between them; the most powerful people in the world are those who caught a critter at level 2-5 and then devoted their life to raising it into a world power.

And as a beautiful side benefit of this, standard of living has increased across the board. Since every household has at least one minor pokemon in the family and there are increasing numbers of professional, working pokemon joining cities and other civilized areas and working to improve them, every aspect of economy and industry has been enhanced by their supernatural capabilities. Electricity is generated cleanly and in abundance for everybody. Pollution is cleaned up almost completely and instantly. The production of farms, mines, and workshops is multiplied, even as safety standards improve. Yes, every few years another potential apocalypse comes about and needs to be prevented by a couple of brave teenagers, but outside of those incidents the world is damn close to utopia.

Meanwhile nobody mentions that you can buy fucking artisan balls on Furretsy. Literally I have 3 cases (6 balls each) of artisan, hand-crafted balls from Johto in my closet.

Literally there’s like 6 people on Furretsy who make these. I’ve used them! They work!

Someone in this thread said that supporting artisan pokeballs is oppressive and like, no???

While I do prefer artisan over mass produced that doesn’t mean I think no one should have pokemon if they can’t pay the price tag- that’s stupid and I’d never say something so awful.

I just think apricorn based balls are better for the environment than modern acrylics because they (apriballs) can actually be reused if you fail to capture unlike acrylics that usually break after one fail thus leading to less material waisted- and even then, unlike acrylics apricorns break down much easier and can even be used in compost if they go through the proper treatment leading to broken balls returning to the environment instead of ending up in landfills.

And, as fennwox said, artisan balls can be purchased for cheaper than you’d think as well, if you know who to buy from.

I love artisan pokeballs because the care and skill needed to create each one leads to sturdier and longer lasting products with much more personalization and ornamentation than standard issue mass produced balls.

Okay, but are we then going to ignore then the reason why mass-produces Pokéballs now break so easily? Pokéballs aren’t just waste and there’s a reason why trainers aren’t required by anyone to pick up their broken Pokéballs after they fail a capture. This information isn’t as readily available as it should be, but here it is. Pokéballs are designed to break to make them more environmentally friendly, believe it or not.

But first things first, let’s put something up into the air. Pokéballs don’t break after a single use. You can actually pick them up, and many people train canine pokémon to fetch them whenever they fail a capture. Yamper and Boltund having an innate ability that prompts them to do so, by the way!

But it’s true modern Pokéballs break down after a few uses, and some will break upon their first use. But this is a design innate of them. If you’ve ever picked apart broken balls you’d notice they tend to break in similar ways.

The hinge is the first thing to break, rendering them unusable. But then the white and colored pieces break down in a specific way, splitting into smaller sheets of metal, usually four or five per Pokéball piece.

(and the breakdown method can give away the producer of the Pokéball, the reason a five-way or four-way split are the most common is because of Silph and Devon being the main producers of Pokéballs.)

This is because Pokéballs are made of metals that can be digested easily by mineral-eating pokémon like Aron! but the shape of the Pokéball can be a hazard for the smaller lithotrophs, so they’re designed to break in this way to be easier to break down by these pokémon!

And I’ve known quite a few colleges who’ve fed their pokémon broken Pokéballs, they can be a nice treat for them because of the varied metal alloys that can be found in them.

Now, older models of Pokéballs, especially artisanal Pokéballs that weren’t readily available for everyone, as mentioned above, could be used for oppression. The association is not unfounded, and many regions have used the inaccessibility of Pokéballs as a method of oppression and class divide, my home region is part of this kind of history.

The Viceroyalty period of Novapaldea (now known as the Tlautlan Region) was known for having a class divide where only the elite of the class from Paldea was allowed to train pokémon, and keep any kind of pokémon. They were also the only allowed to forge, acquire, and use Pokéballs.

Anyone else could simply forget about being allowed to form bonds with pokémon, let alone train them for Pokémon Battles, or simply to help around in the different jobs pokémon are known to aid. And of course, people’s pokémon would be taken away by officials if you were found to have been training one, or if they were specially strong naturally.

And Tlautlan is still suffering the aftermaths of what the Paldean Empire did to the region over a century ago, even with the much more accessible Pokéballs and their newly founded Pokémon League, going into a ‘Pokémon Journey’ is still only something few can dream of doing in the region.

Because of class divides that have been left in the region from the times where they were harshly enforced! And Tlautlan is not the only region in the world that suffers from this kind of division, and while it’s true that blaming this divide and oppression on Pokéballs alone is kinda dumb, and missing the point, you also can’t simply remove that piece of history from Artisanal Pokéballs.

Modern Pokéballs are more efficient, much more accessible, have more humane capture means, and allow for more people to become Pokémon Trainers, Researchers, Caretakers, etc etc etc.

Okay-do you have any favorite champions? Least favorite? I love learning about this stuff! ~ @trainergraceneedstherapy

Cynthia often comes up in conversation for being quite skilled, which I can respect. However, I think she often overshadows other champions skills. I don’t really have a favorite champion, though.

When it comes to least favorites… Lance and Iris are both type specialists, which is a weakness if you’re at champion level. There’s no problem with favoring a certain type, but if you’re battling at that level of skill and prestige, you should have some type diversity in your team.

And… then there’s Geeta. There’s no professional wording I could use to describe how I feel about her and her team. So I will leave it at that.

So, uh, there's 6 series in the Steel Samurai franchise so far. Signal Samurai, Dynamite Samurai, Steel Samurai, Pink Princess, Nickel Samurai, and Iron Legacy, in chronological order.

Signal Samurai technically takes place in an alternate universe to the rest of the franchise, but it's still worth watching. It's definitely got those 80s vibes to it, for better and for worse, and it has some stuff that's...not very good, but it also has a fun trio of protagonists, a fun theme song, and fun action scenes.

Don't watch Dynamite Samurai. It's bad, really bad. It was directed by Micheal Bay, and is extremely edgy and filled with ludicrous amounts of explosions and hypermasculinity. It's only worth watching for some references in Steel Samurai and Iron Legacy.

Steel Samurai is the most famous of them, and for good reason! It has a delightfully complex antagonist, the most iconic theme song in the franchise, Will Powers' brilliant acting, and of course, the Steel Samurai's special moves. My favorite is "Steel Samurai Stellar". It's so cool! Though, uh, this is where Sal Manella became head writer of the franchise, and you can really tell.

Pink Princess is the best one. Some people don't like it, but they're wrong. It has amazing ties to the previous series, doing both parallels and mixing things up, Will Powers gets to play the lead role again, some very cool setpieces and locations, and the finale is just amazing. I'm convinced that someone other than Manella wrote that finale, because it's just so good.

Nickel Samurai, unfortunately, is similar in quality to Dynamite Samurai. Its premise is similar to Signal Samurai, with a trio of protagonists. Two of them, Aluminum Samurai and Tin Samurai, are legitimately very interesting characters! Unfortunately, the show goes out of its way to place almost all the focus on the titular Nickel Samurai, at the expense of the other characters. It even tries to justify Nickel doing some very questionable and even downright horrible things. But it's all brushed under the rug, to protect the reputation of the lead actor, Matt Engarde. It's not worth watching past episode 3.

Iron Legacy, fortunately, is a return to form, being up there with Steel Samurai and Pink Princess. It features the Steel Samurai's adoptive son, and the pressure for him to live up to the legacy of his predecessors. It features callbacks to all previous shows in the Steel Samurai franchise, even Dynamite Samurai and Signal Samurai! It's really cool and still ongoing and I'm so excited to see what happens from here! It's amazing!

There's also a bunch of movies, games, stageplays, and even a musical, but I don't want to overwhelm you with all those right away. I do recommend getting Steel Samurai Tactics if you have the chance, though. It's one of my favorite games ever!
