‘We have always managed to draw danger to ourselves, no one knows why. It isn’t Reemus, no matter how much I would’ve wanted giving him that fault,’ he said, grinning half-heartedly. He scratched behind his ear: he had heard a lot since he had returned, the ins-and-outs of what had happened since he had gone. The horrors of it were staining, but he decided not to comment on them. Lareasa didn’t deserve all of this sadness. 

‘Remember the last time we were here… together?’ he grinned. ‘I do recall that was an amazing time we had. You were a giggling idiot. And here we are, I’m a Shini, and you’re the new Second in Command of our Compan. As amazing-but-now-with-a-title as I left you,’

“If I’m remembering the last time we were here correctly,” which she might not be considering how drunk she’d been, “I was a lot drunker and you dragged me into the freezing lake. I’m not gonna lie I’m still mad about it.” Of course she wasn’t really mad but she always found it fun to tease Gythan over these things.

She was glad they were focusing on happy things, honestly she wanted to keep it that way. She didn’t know how much time she had left with Gythan and she wanted to take advantage of every second. At any moment he could be gone and she didn’t want to have any regrets about his time back.

Gythan laughed. ‘I dragged you in?’ He pretended to be confused. ‘I recount that night very differently, could’ve been the alcohol. But I’m pretty sure you should be thanking me for being dragged into that freezing lake. It cleanses the mind. You know what, I think we should jump in right now!’ he joked, and grinned. 

Then he lifted Lareasa by her waist and pretended to run towards the edge of it, shouting victory as he did so. Only to stop at the last moment where the tips of his toes touched the water.

He smiled wholeheartedly, that must have been one of the nicest things anyone had ever said to him, and she looked so sad saying it. He wasn’t too sure on what to say, so he did what he had wanted to do for a while now, he pulled her in to hug her. ‘I know. I wished I could’ve been around longer.’ 

‘It’s amazing. The city is huge, four times as back underground, there is so much art, the halls are as large as in Tordanes, the library is the greatest I’ve ever seen. I’m pretty sure that soon after the war, despite the damages it has dealt with, it will be the greatest city of the Fifth Gate.’ He had never been in such awe about HagaFosiel, but having been there he understood why the Dragons wanted it back so badly, and while the major impact of the war was fought before the city. 

‘I never figured I would be back for a Second Coming, this time around though, nothing seems to have changed,’ he looked around. ‘Except for the new King and all. I’ve been hoping my being here, as a Shini, means the Gods know there is a way to end it all.’

Being in Gythan’s arms as he rambled about the beauty of HagaFosiel was as familiar and wonderful as it was breathtakingly painful. She never wanted to let him go again. She would happily have stayed right there in his arms until the day she died.

As they pulled apart she refocused in on the conversation, having not truly paid attention to what he was saying a moment ago. “Surprisingly a lot has changed, though most of it is just some rank changes and such. Though maybe things only feel different in our Compan. We tend to go through the most out of everyone.”

She hadn’t thought logistically about how many things had changed since Gythan’s passing. A lot of those things had seemed insignificant when compared to the fact that he had died.

‘Neither would I, to be honest. All these other guys were majorly important. The dude who created the Knights, and two Black Dragon Magicians. I don’t really fit in with them. However, it is kind of a great compliment.’ He grinned. He couldn’t call himself proud of that fact, it mostly just scared him. If he hadn’t died, would he have been super important too? 

‘I’m here, I have to do something, but no one really specified what I should be doing considering those messages. What I have to do or say, isn’t really clear to me.’ He let his head hang and placed his  hands in his pocket. ‘I don’t think it is. From everything I know about Shini, they disappear back into Out of Time as soon as they have done what the Gods wanted from them. I don’t think this time will be any different.’ 

He looked at her still smiling, Gods she was beautiful. ‘It’s pretty entertaining though. I’ve been to Haga, beautiful city. I hope we get it back, so you can see it.’

“You were majorly important to a lot of us, Gythan.” She glanced down, hoping he wouldn’t see her pain, which of course he would anyway. He’d always been able to read her like an open book.

“You went to Haga? I’ve always wanted to see it in person. I’ve seen some paintings and heard stories, but from what I’ve heard nothing compares to seeing it in person.” Though like most other great cities, she would probably only see it while in battle, which kind of ruins the whole tourist attraction feel of the city.

Everything about the situation felt so strange. From the fact that she still referred to him in the past tense to the fact that he seemed as if nothing had changed. Though for him, had things really changed? He had died, but he’d died protecting Yana. She didn’t know what Out of Time was like but she really doubted he spent his time missing a life spent at war.

Gythan couldn’t help smiling a bit as he watched her ask confused questions and keep herself together. It was not her shock that amused him, but how much all of her reactions were so perfectly her, and he couldn’t express how happy he was to see her. He was sure she would catch herself at some point, she was strong, everyone knew that. 

‘I’m good,’ he answered, even though her questions weren’t truly that. ‘I am a Shini, you probably don’t remember from those dull history lessons but: people brought back by the Gods to send a message. Or something or other.’ He paused again. ‘And the how is then pretty much connected to the what,’ he explained further. 

He watched as she took his hand, which made him feel warm and fuzzy inside, a feeling that completely disrupted the loneliness that covered him since he returned. His new smile included sadness too, aside from his usual warmth. 

‘I’ve missed you too.’

“I always thought Shini were made up. Even if I had known before that they weren’t, I never would have thought that one of my friends would be resurrected.” It was hard to wrap her head around even though it wasn’t actually a lot of information. She could easily read the sadness mixed into his expression and it made her sad as well. She couldn’t even begin to imagine how this all felt for him. 

“So, how does this whole Shini thing work? What kind of message or whatever are you supposed to be sending?“ She paused for a moment, trying to keep the sadness out of her own expression. “I’m assuming it’s not permanent. That would be too good to be real.”

She hoped it was permanent with every fiber of her being, but she knew the reality. The best she could hope was that it lasted for a while longer.

As a Shini, Gythan found that many normal feelings any human had - sadness, revenge, longing - didn’t count for him. He was very certain it had stopped him from being in touch with most of whom he was before he died. Not that he minded, even that feeling had been taken away from him, and he was fine with what was left. Yet, this very spot somehow called to him, even if the memory of it was vague in feeling, despite being clear in seeing. 

He knew that if he hadn’t died, there might have been a chance that alike his younger brother, he would’ve been able to start a family of his own. Have a few kids, hope they weren’t Magicians - though that was very unlikely, as BloodHunter - and raise them with a lot of love. His dream had always been that, his dangerous longing. However, none of that mattered to him now. He looked out on the lake, and he thought of his old Compan. 

His whole body shook when a voice rung in his ears. He turned with a giant smile, watching Lareasa, the grace she had always been, looking at him. He knew how she must feel, seeing him again, but he couldn’t help being happy to see her face again. He almost skipped into her direction, keeping a little distance to not freak her out to much. ‘I have no idea,’ he admitted.

“How are… what… how….” She gave up trying to speak for a moment and took several deep breaths. She felt like she was going insane, but everything pointed to her being perfectly sane. You know, besides the fact that a dead person was standing in front of her. She needed to do something other than just standing there, otherwise he was going to think she was crazy too.

The shock still hadn’t fully subsided. Without really realizing what she was doing, she moved closer to him and reached out, taking his hand in her’s. She needed that confirmation. To feel his hand in her’s made everything seem so much more real. For a brief moment it was easy to forget that he had died, the entire thing seemed like a dream. Then reality settled back in. 

Once she had finally gathered herself she glanced up at him and spoke, saying the only thing she could think to say as she fought the urge to wrap her arms around him and never let go.

“I’ve missed you.”

For once Lareasa found herself with some much needed free time. Not the I have time to myself but still have to run errands kind of free time, but genuine time that she could use for whatever she wanted. She wasted the day not really doing much other than relaxing, but as evening drew closer she became bored. That was how she ended up walking aimlessly around town. She didn’t have a specific destination but she knew she wanted to be anywhere but home so she just kept walking. Before she knew it she was standing on the outskirts of town by the lake.

As she went closer to the shoreline she saw a man standing facing the water. The sun setting threw shadows across his figure making it hard to tell who he was. She continued walking toward the shore, intending to say hello to whoever he was. Just as she was about to say something to the man, she caught a glimpse of his face.

She was going insane. No other option. She had finally lost her mind. There was no possible way that Gythan was standing in front of her. It had to be a trick of the light or something. She was after all at the same lake she had been to with Gythan, so maybe she was just imagining it. She kept running through her brain looking for a logical explanation but she couldn’t find one. It was definitely him, it had to be, but how? How was he here? Why was he here?

Why was she asking all these questions and not just talking to him?

She took a deep breath calming herself down and trying to slow her mind. She walked forward until she was only a few steps behind him. Trying to speak like a normal person and not sound totally crazy, she said something not specific to him just in case she really was imagining this and it was just some random dude who happened to look like her dead friend. “Hey. What are you doing here?” Yeah, that was about as good as her speech was going to get right now.

My enemy, the... zombie?! | Gythan & Ream

Gythan was glad to hear her laugh, it had been a while since he last made someone laugh. He thought maybe his ability to bring joy had been left in Out of Time, and he was without what had once made him so unique. Seemed he had been wrong. A large part of him had been returned to the world of the living, for maybe just a short time. He would take that time to do whatever the Gods expected of him, and to do more. 

‘What’s his name?’ he asked. He couldn’t suppress how curious he was. ‘The Knights have no information on him, nothing at all. Except that he has green hair. He’s kind of a mystery, so don’t mind me if I’m curious,’ he said with a quick grin. ‘I don’t want to do him any harm, I’m dead, I saved my niece, I have nothing in my being that seeks revenge,’ he assured her. 

‘Really?’ He smiled. ‘Yes, I guess it is,’ he said, and smiled. ‘I used to be very proud of it.’ 

‘I don’t know what I said? I can’t remember saying anything,’ he concluded. Now, Gythan wasn’t stupid, he could easily see from her face that he had said something, and thought that maybe he would say something again. ‘I think… just maybe, this is something the Gods put me up to.’

Part of hr still felt bad, like she was betraying someone for having fun with the man, but it was difficult to feel guilty, when she was enjoying the moment. She would have time and possibility to feel guilty later, for now she wanted to enjoy this once in a lifetime experience with the Shini. No one knew when something like this would happen again and if Ream would be still alive then.

It was not a strange thing he was asking about Orractous and as much as she enjoyed his company, this was not something she could do. “Well, I suppose you can’t always know everything about your enemy. Not everyone. Seems, he has a nice taste in hair style, hm?” A part of her felt uneasy about the fact they knew nothing about Orractous, yet seemed to have heard about her. “You don’t seem the type who seeks for revenge, but I can’t.” She shook her head. “However, you could find back to your own people, tell them whatever I tell you and in case you really know nothing about him… I can’t do that. I’m sorry, I really am.”

“Yes, I mean every magic has it’s own beauty, but of course I do have my own favorites too.”

“Oh… Oh! That makes sense… I mean no, it does not. I mean, I don’t know what it means what you said…” She sighed and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. It was something about another war in the past… very bloody… It kinda sounded like we didn’t learn from our mistakes.”

‘Very secretive, you Mancers are,’ he commented, though he was disappointed to hear. However much he had lost of wanting things, actually having hopes and dreams, knowing who had called him, knowing this person’s name, seemed important to him. ‘So you can’t even tell me his name?’ he asked, once again. ‘I’ll have to keep referring to him as the green haired monster, then?’ He was trying to make a joke on it, but truthfully, he was a bit hurt. Somehow hadn’t his new part to play changed which side he was on? 

Gythan held his head to the side, what she said sounded kind of vague, like the words were there, clear and sound, but his ears messed up the tone, making him unable to hear it. Also some godly trick, probably. 

He looked confused for a second. ‘Neither do I, to be honest. Then again I don’t think I’m supposed to know,’ he admitted, and sighed. ‘I’m just a mouth piece for the Gods.’ He felt said saying it. 

‘Every race would pick a side against the children of their gods. But within the fight and beyond the worlds their battle was at odds.’

Gythan kept smiling, he couldn’t help himself. Life was good, wasn’t it? Oh yeah it was. Yet, there was still that feeling that there was something he should do. Something he should say. ‘Ah yes, they call it a Shini, but I think Magical Zombie is just as typical. I am raised from the dead after all. And pretty Magical.’ Though he knew he didn’t have any Magic now, he knew there was still something Magical about him, aside from the whole ‘raised from the dead’ thing. ‘Oh yes, pretty much, basically this thing I’m experiencing right now. Like, I’m dead, I know I’m dead, but I feel alive, but at the same time… not alive.’ 

‘Gythan,’ he introduced himself. ‘Gythan Wuzto. Toalk, I think I’ve heard of you before. Lath Magician, right?’ he asked. Sure, he had always been pretty well informed, but he was very sure he had heard about her a couple of times more than he had heard about others. She was important to the Cold North, he just couldn’t remember how she was important. It was a war like this, blood and gore, and you would think after it, the world would not want more, he said, but as he said it, he couldn’t remember having ever spoken.

It was a bit weird, knowing the man was dead and seeing him smile so bright. What reason did he have to smile? Was dead so good? It must have been, then why else the smile. Unless he was happy about being back, but that would be weird, then he must have known this was just temporary. However it made him seem so much friendlier and that made Ream like him. He had something likeable about him. “That’s a bit confusing, but then again, this whole situation is. It’s not like something like this happens every day.

Blood rushed to her cheeks and she lowered her head. “Yes, that’s me. I mean, I’m. A Lath Magician.” It still surprised her when people recognized her and it just got even weirder, when a dead man did. Or well, a Shini. “I’m sorry, but I don’t know much about you, just that you are… were a Knight.” He used to be her enemy, yet she liked him so far. That made her feel guilty, but at the same time not. She didn’t mention the fact she knew his killer, there was no point in it. Besides, he already spoke again. Ream’s eyebrows furrowed and she tilted her head to the side, causing her hair to fall from her shoulder. “W-What? Was that a…?”

‘I hope not, I wouldn’t feel special anymore,’ Gythan said, then laughed wholeheartedly. ‘You know, in the past I used to doubt whether the Gods existed, but I guess, seeing as I experienced it first hand.’ He placed his hands in his sides, and looked up at the sky. Then he looked back. This was a weird situation if you asked him. Weirdest about it was that he was talking to his former enemy, and he didn’t feel the need or even the drive to avenge his own death. 

‘Say, weird question and all, but do you know that green haired guy that fights at your side?’ 

He smiled. ‘Yes, Knight, completely. I’m a Sun Magician, fought with the Compan of Reemus Chief, nice guy, strange costumes.’ His gaze changed when her confused face pulled at him. ‘What what?’ he asked, studying her. ‘Something amiss?’

Ream couldn’t help, but laugh at his words, there was something delightful about him, despite her knowing, that once they stood on different sides. Some people would probably think it would be appropiate to still consider him the enemy, but it was difficult to see him such as that. Ream followed the man’s look gaze up in the sky, listening to his words. 

Slowly, she lowered her head and sighed. He probably meant Orractous, that would only be logicalknowing their past. “Yes, yes I do.”

“Sun Magic? It’s such a fascinating kind of magic.” In war it was often easy to forget, that your enemy were just people too. Having normal lifes just like they did. The woodelf sighed painfully, before looking at the man, looking just as confused - if not even more - as the man in front of her. “You said… you don’t know?”

Gythan felt… left out. Of all the Shini that had been resurrected to work for the Gods in some mysterious way, on something that they had cared to share, but had shattered in his mind when his body, spiritual body made physical, was transported down from Out of Time, or up. He didn’t know where exactly it was that he had been transported from. He mostly walked around, sad. Sad to see the world he had left behind. Worst of all, it hadn’t been that long since he had last seen this world. He was… in comparison to the other Shini: newly dead. His heart ached to find Yana, to close her into his arms and tell her that she shouldn’t worry, shouldn’t feel sad. But as much as his heart ached, his brain, his body carried him into a different direction, searching for something.

He almost jumped when seeing a small redhead come his way, calling to him. ‘One of them? You mean a Magical Zombie?’ he asked, flashing her a smile. He couldn’t help it, as much as he felt drowned in his new situation, odd because he should be dead, he still felt his old self. Joking, flirting, loving, enjoying.

Ream furrowed her eyebrows and pouted. Did he just say magical zombie? Did he actually say that? Maybe he wasn’t one of them and he just heard about what was going on and tried to have his fun… by pretending he was one of them. No. She shook her head. That didn’t make sense. And there was this strong feeling of that magic she never experienced before. 

Slowly her doubts diappeared and suddenly she found herself being excited. “Not my choice of words, but… it that’s what you want to call it, then yes, sure. So you are… a magical zombie? You must be one, then I have never experienced a magic like yours. Okay, to be fair, there are some kinds of magic I haven’t seen yet, but this is different. I mean this is not even slightly bit familiar. You know that feeling? When you experience something you never did before? But something similar, so it feel familiar?” Ream stopped, realizing she was babbling. She brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. “I’m Ream. Ream Toalk.”

Gythan kept smiling, he couldn’t help himself. Life was good, wasn’t it? Oh yeah it was. Yet, there was still that feeling that there was something he should do. Something he should say. ‘Ah yes, they call it a Shini, but I think Magical Zombie is just as typical. I am raised from the dead after all. And pretty Magical.’ Though he knew he didn’t have any Magic now, he knew there was still something Magical about him, aside from the whole ‘raised from the dead’ thing. ‘Oh yes, pretty much, basically this thing I’m experiencing right now. Like, I’m dead, I know I’m dead, but I feel alive, but at the same time... not alive.’ 

‘Gythan,’ he introduced himself. ‘Gythan Wuzto. Toalk, I think I’ve heard of you before. Lath Magician, right?’ he asked. Sure, he had always been pretty well informed, but he was very sure he had heard about her a couple of times more than he had heard about others. She was important to the Cold North, he just couldn’t remember how she was important. It was a war like this, blood and gore, and you would think after it, the world would not want more, he said, but as he said it, he couldn’t remember having ever spoken.

My enemy, the... zombie?! | Gythan & Ream

Ream already read about the Shini, but she didn’t think she would be alive to experience them on her own. And now here they were. Of course the woman was excited, but what was she supposed to do? How was she supposed to act? All those books couldn’t prepare one for when it would actually happen. Should she approach them with caution? It was difficult to imagine, considering her curiosity.

Forgetting all reasons that spoke against it, Ream decided to go and find one of them, if not anything else, then just to see them with her own eye. She could never forgive herself if she would miss this opportunity! But how was she supposed to find them?

As it turned out, it was easier than she thougt. Not much later she found one of them, wandering around confused. Or at least she assumed it was one of them, then when she got close enough, she could feel another kind of magic - one she never experiened before.

“Are you one of them?” Great, Ream, just blurt it out.

Gythan felt... left out. Of all the Shini that had been resurrected to work for the Gods in some mysterious way, on something that they had cared to share, but had shattered in his mind when his body, spiritual body made physical, was transported down from Out of Time, or up. He didn’t know where exactly it was that he had been transported from. He mostly walked around, sad. Sad to see the world he had left behind. Such a Nice Surprise || Yana & Gythan vs. Orractous

The roar the monster let out was different from all the ones it had let out before, this one had an undertone and volume that made Yana’s open flesh, her bones, even the ground underneath her vibrate. If she could move her left arm, Yana would have pressed her ears closed, but like this, the vibration running through her skull only made her feel dizzy and sick. But the Bloodhunter kept her eyes open, kept her eyes looking up, towards the sun that was her uncle. Towards the man that had this heat haze all around him, more powerful than Yana would have imagined it to be, even down on the ground she could feel the heat warming the skin on her legs that felt incredibly cold.

Another thing that dawned on Yana while in such a low perspective was the size of the monster that her uncle was slashing his blades at. While on her feet, with her head filled with adrenaline and the bliss of ignorance it seemed like a very big wolf, but now, especially after Yana had met the monster itself, it seemed at least three times as big. It was massive and the sun through the glass added to its movements, making it hard to actually make out where it was. The more Yana concentrated on the monster, the more her head started pulsating again, as if trying to get away from any thoughts and memories that had just happened to it.

When the monster raised its claws again, Yana’s eyes shot wide, but started glimmering when the glass crashed against Gythan’s blades with a shrill noise. As her ears got used to being used again, so did her other senses, if even still very dimmed. The air smelled weird, thick and hot and the pain was still there, just like the blood dripping out of her, but considering that her shoulder and upper chest were open and she could see bone fragments Yana was disturbingly calm. Watching her uncle fight for her, she could see how good he was, how we seemed to actually not only stand a chance against it, but really seemed to have one. Smiling, Yana moved the arm she had reached towards him to his ancle, desperate to touch her family and even if she could see blisters forming on her fingers, she didn’t feel them being painful.

Noticing her touch, Gythan moved to his right, blocking out the everything Yana could have seen of the monster. He was protecting her in any way, not only her body, even her mind. Not seeing the monster felt as if it wasn’t even there and soon it wouldn’t be. Her uncle was here. All her father had told her, Gythan had promised her was true. Uncle Gythan was the sun, the savior and the smile on Yana’s face shone bright with hope.

Swords slashed at his green skin, warmth burned against his normal body.  The fault of it only got Orractous angry. He wasn’t used to being beaten, not to being cornered, and surely not to having his protection taken away. The whole outer body that his Magic created had been something set in stone, he could always rely on it even when he couldn’t handle the monster. It was what kept him proud, and most of all, it was the one thing that made him different, stand out. He growled, angry now clouding his voice, which was raw and painful. The wounds hurting more and more as it became warmer. 

He had completely forgotten about the other Knight, his whole mind scanning and studying his new opponent, the other BloodHunter with his two swords and his obvious Star Magic. Biting at the heat was useless, his chin smelled like burnt out firewood, and if he went any deeper to snap at the Knight’s head, he would probably set his hair on fire. This was way too irritating for either Orractous and the Monster within. 

Finally he gave up trying to protect himself, his fingers were burning, his claws faltered to hit anything real except for warmth, and the deep cries to end it all, to keep himself from getting hurt, were a deep desire. He lashed out, one claw towards the head of the Knight, and then pushed his paws into the ground, launching himself at the protection of warmth, feeling the glass melt away as he crashed into the Knight. The Greenness snapped at the Knight’s head, ripped at his armor, at his hair, anywhere he could touch. He smelled the fabric of his armor catching flame, the heat stretching around his whole upper body as he dived into the man’s protection. 

For a moment he caught a glimps of the other Knight, remembering again the two wounds, the one in his shoulder, and the one in his knees. And then he snapped, his whole body felt as if he was about to crash into the ground from miles into the sky, the pain started at his wounds, and ripped through his flesh and bones like wildfire. But he wasn’t defeated, he couldn’t let fear become reality, he had to finish this, because if he gave up, it would be his last act. He brought down his claw, melting glass falling to the ground, and pushed down upon the man’s neck. He heard a loud crack, the sound of victory.

It was to his own advantage when he noticed how the claws of the Monster ripped only through the layer of his protection, the heat burning at his face and fingers, he could see its distaste for the warmth, the burning sensation that he had learned to live with. Gythan only needed to double the heat to break through the Mancer's defenses, that's how he could save Yana. 

The monster attacked, his jaws trying to snap at his head, but he saw pretty soon how useless his plans were. Gythan's heat was at full warmth, he was a volcano, sweat dripping from his pores. The holds of his swords were warm, searing into his skin, but it was only a small sacrifice if it meant he could kill his opponent or burn him alive. The Mancer backed away, then slashed down his claw and launched itself on him. The heat blasted around him, Gythan felt it like it was alive, attacking the glass that threw him to the ground. He flung his swords into the glass, breaking it with the heat, as he hit the ground with his back. He saw some pain behind those inhuman black eyes, hoped that it was his swords that brought the final blow. 

Then he found the claw, heavy unlike anything he'd ever tried to lift, pushing through the heat, stepping on his chest, where he heard bones break. In that one last moment before the green hand crushed the bones in his neck, he focussed all his energy on the heat around him, mending it to his upper body, strengthening it with the skill and power he didn't need himself. 

The pain in his bones was infinite, but it felt soundless and fast, no blood dripping from fatal organs or a slow death. One moment he was staring at the black eyes of the man within the monster, the other he felt his conscious drawn away into a faithful sleep. There wasn't any pain, there was only a bright light, like the sun. The heat spread out like a sun that exploded, burning, destroying. But Gythan was too far away to notice, a warm feeling washed over him. When BloodHunters died, they returned to the sun, the one place they came from, and it was always the sun, everyone deserved the warmth.
