Joey hesitated, peering suspiciously at the cards for a moment, half-convinced that some dark, bat-haired spirit would leap out of them and start a Shadow Game. When that didn’t happen, he slowly lifted his hand, pausing over cards that gave him the inclination to do so, and picking them.

          “Okay, uh…” 

He gestured vaguely, unsure of what to do next. Jo had never done anything like this in his life, and why he felt the urge to do it now was beyond him. He supposed a lot had changed just lately, people leaving and entering his life, changes in his living situation, his health, his happiness. It was all too much to consider, and it freaked him out. 

Past, present and future. It sounded ominous, somehow. Ryou was so good at analysing people anyway, Joey knew he didn’t really need the cards’ help, but he supposed it was respectful to ask this way, rather than outright, for his advice. 

          “Shoot, I guess.”

‒  For a moment, all fell silent again; Ryou wasn’t as away with the clouds as he always came off so... despite the irony of his patron card being that of the fool; he knew Joey was humouring this idea... and his thoughts of the sheer spectacle of expecting the spirit to appear as an pesky apparition, sneering and cackling was strangely still relevant.

These kind of things; they’d only been learned with his influence. The borderline obsessive interest with what was hidden behind the veil in the lands of power, arcane and defiance of death.. the longing to know of the unknown that they, these two fleshy mortal beings could only ever have a slither of understanding properly... had been given to him by the spirit and all his unfortunate wisdom. His keen eye followed the hand, his own prepared to pull the cards chosen and read him.

One by one the cards were revealed, Ryou did not seemed shocked, saddened, surprised... almost an eerie calm. As if ever one of them could have been foreseen as a card that would show itself for Joey.

In the game of duel monsters; it was important that you read the cards. But in this particular card ‘game’...

Joey protested, pulling a face but doing as he was told, flopping down onto Ryou’s couch. He folded his arms over his chest, peering down curiously at the cards as his friend unwrapped them. He wasn’t normally usually into this kind of thing, but as a naturally superstitious individual, it made sense for him to seek out his spiritually talented friend in times like this.

“I had some issues with uh… someone… else.”

Oh, man, he was digging himself into a hole. How did he explain that his ex who he hadn’t seen in two years had decided to reappear, only to fuck him right over again? Why did he get into these situations? It wasn’t a good idea for him to be messing with these things, not now, not when he had a hundred and one other things to deal with. He needed to get his shit together.

And of course Duke reappeared right when he was at his goddamn lowest.

‒ “Mhm, mhm, that’s a good baseline for a read.” He didn’t mean to sound so nonchalant, but it was good to remain positive when using the cards; and Joey’s demeanour was a little telling of him before he’d even opened his mouth. Though it was still surprising, nonetheless, that this of all things was what he was seeking comfort from. Flattering, actually.

“Let’s see here... sorry my place is a little more of a mess right now..” it wasn’t awful, but Joey’s wandering eyes would definitely be able to pick up on some oddities. It looked like some books had been pulled; a few extremely dusty boxes were dotted around the diorama table which, also seemed to have upon it... a plane ticket to Egypt...

“Ah! found them. I had these delivered from a pen pal in Romanian, isn’t that cool?” .... not what Joey was here for- at least Ryou was self aware enough to move on to the task at hand. Allowing a moment for Joey to settle before pulling over a small wooden table close to the couch and spreading out the cards. A gold trim, authentic looking- some kind of antique that would have probably been loved over the years. They even seemed to have a slight.. charred smell to them from the box in which they’d been kept.

“So! if you want to just.. guide your hand over the spread; feel what cards reach back out to you. We’ll stick to something simple and to the point with the classic past present and future read, okay?” ‒

“Hey, bud! Do my tarot!”

‑ “Ahhh, really, joey? Oh! I’ve got a new pack I’ve been saving- we can crack it open!”

How exciting! Joey had been one he’d never read before. New grounds, new soil; even after all this time of knowing one another, it could reveal untold wonders! Ryou encouraged the other to follow suit in getting comfortable by a flat surface as he flit about, hunting for the specific unopened deck.

“So~ what’s brought on this then? A sense of the awaiting unknown tickling your curiosity? A brief dabbling with the lines of predicted fate and untold raw arcana awaiting in the shadows?” sounded like the start of a dnd character creation.

“Or did Mai send you an ‘I’m fine’ kind of text, haha~”  ‑

Ryou has been living independently from the age of 14 with supervision.  Briefly between the ages of 11-13 in the years following the death of his father, he was housed in care, but found it difficult to settle for reasons.

But due to this, he both has a strange sense of pride over his apartment and fleeting connection to it. He stores many of the possessions in regards to his deceased family, also using it as a hub for diorama crafting and other table top hobbies; but he still frequently finds there’s urge to leave - perhaps to pursue travelling like his father did, in memory of all past events or to escape memories left within. Yet he still finds this concept too difficult to immediately pursue. 

His apartment could be considered well off given that it was paid off when he became able to control some of the inheritance left behind as the final member of his family. 

It’s mostly open plan in regards to the sitting area (TV) leading into the area in which he lays out his table top / dnd spreads and dioramas. It - coincidentally, was where he constructed the original concepts and pieces for the millennium spirit’s final game with yami - while under his influence. 

His kitchen is lovely. Because he loves food. Always clean.

There’s a balcony with the guest room. Because the master room has a study space connected to it which he uses the most of any room, he spends far more time in there; but every now and then, he does like to use the guest room as a way to cleanse.

Storage includes ouija boards, items brought back from his father’s travel’s, his mother’s possessions, Amane’s possessions and the cards collected by the spirit which remain in boxes. This is the only place in Ryou’s house that is not well organised. Yet he only needs to stand in there for a little while to find the things he looks for.

She could pick up on the fact that he didn't recognize her entirely, but it was expected. She was older now, at least ten or twenty pounds heavier, and there was the change in presentation thing. She hadn't seen him in ages either, her memories of him were blurry. "How-- how have you been?"

‐ “Oh! very well, yes- uh, doing the usual.” …he couldn’t keep this up. This was a feeling that he was older and wiser enough now to confront early on. Anything that managed to dig its way into instinct that had been grown and festered where a parasite once held vessel. 

“I don’t mean to be rude, I really don’t; but .. I’m sure we know each other, but I can’t exactly understand how. If that makes sense.” ‐
