beat dragon age: origins for the first time a few days ago. and yeah it is as good as everyone says it is. maybe better—it really is perfectly tailored to my tastes. some scattered thoughts below:

appreciated the sociological approach to worldbuilding (something that was missing from the otherwise-great bg3), the origins system gives you a playable prologue depending on your race/class/background to situate you in the world and reframe how you interact with certain characters/locations. i played an elf mage for the record, and the origin makes you attached to fuckass npcs like jowan who'd otherwise be some random blood mage.

the landsmeet was my favorite part, politicking around trying to get the nobles to side with you so you can overthrow loghain, and it's so interesting how differently the landsmeet itself can go depending on the choices you make before and during it, and even on your origin. i need more politics in my fantasy rpgs PLEASE.

great writing and great characters; alistair, morrigan, and leliana are some of my favorite rpg companions ever. though there is a gulf between the four romanceable companions and the others lol. maybe next time i'll have to run around with sten/oghren/shale

the whole voice cast is great, with alistair (steve valentine), morrigan (claudia black), and loghain (simon templeman) being standout performances.

the asoiaf inspiration is palpable (the night's watch is here! but even edgier! and our bastard hero believes in its honor even stronger!)

most importantly, i am now enlightened and enjoy rtwp combat.

playing through awakening now, enjoying it though the writing is noticeably a step down from the base game (the attempts at stronghold management are appreciated at least). but i love anders and am excited to have him as a companion again in dragon age 2! (←clueless)
