"No, it's good I ran into you."
Perhaps it was the irrational thinking he sometimes shared with his late brother Menoetius or the wanting of his brothers to have a father that made him say, “Deal.”
"Your pity isn’t something I am searching for."
Hades held out his hand for Atlas to shake. "Trust me, Atlas. It is not pity I feel for my family."
"Excuse me?"
"Exactly! And he doesn’t talk which makes him the perfect companion."
He does talk, sort of, I'm sure barking counts.
"No, it's good I ran into you."
"Like what? What do you want from me?"
"And you seem to have forgotten the sorrow and ire you have caused my family, my brothers, my aunts and uncles - your aunts and uncles as well.
I desire one thing. I bring him out of Tartarus only if you, Atlas, take the full brunt of his anger and his paranoia. Meaning, if he wishes to harm me or someone who is innocent in all of this. You carry the burden of taking that person's place.
I find it hard to feel bad for it when everyone one of them wished my siblings and I dead all because of a prophecy that may not have happened if things went differently.
The Descent || Hades and Persephone
Enna. The fields were beautiful, and in the presence of the young goddess Persephone they seemed all the more stunning. It was a picture perfect day, the kind that mortals often dreamed of. The goddess of Spring was there on a small trip with a handful of maidens and some of her favorite sisters in tow. Smiles and laughter were shared with Artemis and Aphrodite as they all basked in the warm sunlight. With war on the horizon it wasn’t often they all got together and just enjoyed the peace of a perfect Spring day. However, as so often occurred of late, it wasn’t long at all until Persephone had wondered off on her own with every intention of returning soon.
Hades had felt weary more often as of late, taking on the throne of the Underworld require more of his time and work as things slowly settled. Thanatos had been a great help as usual and Hecate helped him with some other things, he was grateful for their help each day. But they couldn't know what he was about to do. Even he knew that maybe his idea would be bad, but Demeter had said no to him and Zeus had said yes. While Hades wasn't one to forsake one sibling for another Hades had feelings he couldn't fully hide anymore, not since things are turning closer to the war. Persephone would be safe in his palace now that Iapetus was not there. Following after the girl he took a deep breath and took her as gently as he could into his arms, and calling forth the gates to take her into the Underworld.
"Excuse me?"
"Mostly I just want to get rid of them as quickly as possible. I don’t see the point in hearing their stories if they’re just going to move on five minutes later."
"He barks, he wags his tail, he slobbers in my river—he’s a dog."
Do not forget he likes to bathe and play in your river.
"Excuse me?"
"Okay maybe with you but when they pass by my river, most of them are still in denial or moaning about going back. And nymphs are boring. And I don’t think Charon likes me. I like your dog though."
That is why you move from your river to talk to them, Styx. Cerberus isn't a dog, Cerberus is Cerberus.
"No, it's good I ran into you."
"Fine then, I’ll put this simply for you: no matter what my father has done to you or to me, I will get him out. Yes, he is paranoid, and he is not getting any help stuck down there. Yes, you were right, I am a map maker. I am the god of navigation. I know the depths of all the seas, the position of the stars in the farthest corners of the universe, and I know every dent in your precious Tartarus."
"You know, I remember the day who were born. Now that I think about it, I shouldn’t have let my uncle eat you. I should have just killed you and your brothers right then and there. Think how many lives I would have saved."
I would be careful when you speak of Tartarus, the man is quite in love with his prison. However despite your hostility and my hatred of your father I am willing to send him to a different place that is out of Tartarus, but that is only if I get something out of it. Because if you go down there and I'm very sure you will, it's not me you have to deal with. It's Tartarus, and he is a lot scarier than I am. And a lot these willing to let someone in his prison leave.
Oh I do get a good laugh each time a Titan tells me that because then all of you would have to live with my mother's sorrow and her ire. You speak about all these lives you would save if none of us were around, but you forget that I mortal I have killed was under the order of your father. And all the deaths my family have caused include the Titans as well. Or do you naively believe that every titan shares your morality?
"No, it's good I ran into you."
"I have seen no account to think you are any better than my father. Does locking him up make you a hero because he threatened one person? Countless have been given less of a punishment for threatening nations. You wanted power, that is all, and instead of creating your own like a respectable person, you stole it."
And we go back to the first words I said of you being an outsiders in the Underworld and never being there. Just like how instead of making fire like a "respectable person" Prometheus thought it wise to steal it? You have the morality of someone who doesn't know what people will do to keep themselves at a place they think is right and powerful. Only an idiot would take a throne and let the man before him walk free, many would agree with me on that part. Do I think I am better than your father? Yes I do, because I never let myself fall so deep in paranoia over something that didn't involve him.
"Excuse me?"
"That’s my only one. No one else to talk to down here except dead people and they really aren’t very good with conversation."
They are actually quite great with stories. At least those that enjoy sharing their lives before death.
There are also nymphs and Charon who might enjoy conversation.
"No, it's good I ran into you."
"There are now, or there will be in a few moments. Or you will at least let me ask a few questions. Seeing as this is the first time I have run into you, I don’t know when it will happen again."
"For example, could you list the crimes my father had committed? Another, how is this your kingdom? In theory, a kingdom falls down through the line of sons and I am the oldest son of my father. How is it your right to claim this place?"
And in your theory you forget that when someone is overthrown it ceases to go down a family line. Secondly, what do you, a map maker, know about the Underworld? What do you know about death beyond the basic facts? You can not claim for the simple fact that no one who lives here would follow you because you never lived here, you never took time to understand the dead or the living that make their home down here. While your father ruled the Underworld it does not make you a part of it, you are an outsider from a land that most down here do not even see.
Let me tell you of his crimes. His paranoia led to him completely shutting himself within his palace, he has threatened death and bodily harm upon a nymph only because she has been speaking to me, and among other things he does not treat those who live here as people. Do not try to think that Iapetus was anything like the man he used to be because the last moments when I overthrew him he cursed all of his sons for an act I did because he thought all of you helped me.
"Excuse me?"
"Uh… Myself. I like to talk conversations through in my head so I don’t get frazzled when I actually talk to someone. It’s a bad habit."
I see. Never knew you to have many bad habits.
"No, it's good I ran into you."
"I will soon, yes, but first I’d like to speak to you."
"What were those agreements again, how my father could be freed?"
There were none and anyone who told you otherwise was lying.
"No, it's good I ran into you."
"Not as much as you would think."
You don't know what I think. Come down to visit your father again I see.
What in Zeus name is this?
Shut up and eat it.
"Excuse me?"
Who are you talking to, Styx?
"No, it's good I ran into you."
Is it really?
