Welcome to my page!

The name is Loukas (he/him transmasc), I am 19, turning 20 this month and I have been a Hellenic polytheist for five years, mainly worshipping Lord Hermes.

Some Considerations:

This blog is based upon my religion, Hellenic Polytheism. This is not a fandom, however, I do welcome fans of Greek mythology so long as you are respectful and courteous.

My patron deity is Hermes, so in the spirit of Xenia, all travelers are welcome... if you have good intentions. No trolls allowed.... okay?? 🫡 They're gone now, right???

I made this page because someone called to my attention I am no longer a baby helpol at this point and some people could use some guidance... I certainly could've before I got a hang of it 😬...

It was a long journey to get to this point, and now I would like to give back to the community that has given so much to me. Truly, the people I have spoken to have been a light in dark times, some of the nicest people I've spoken to were the ones who helped me find my footing.

I hope this can be a safe space for us helpols and a space where baby helpols can come to for advice and resources, as I know when starting out finding resources is difficult, and if I could help guide even one person then it would bring me a deep peace of mind.

(Trust me. I'm embarrassed to admit it, I didn't even know what khernips was until two years ago 😳🫣 nobody in the major online spaces mentioned you need to wash yourself before you offer and pray to the Theoi, probably thinking it's like the definition of horse... "Everybody knows what a horse is.."..... Until horses go extinct and now historians don't have a definition.... And I want to help others so they don't have to stumble along like I did.)

I had a thought on religion vs fandom

Religion: devotion that goes deep, even after the feelings of excitement fade you deeply believe that the gods are real and you have a lifestyle reflecting that, give offerings (if you can) pray to them and you strongly believe in the values of that religion and have deeply researched it. You don't draw your two gods kissing unless they're cannonically married.

Fandom; that feral unhinged feeling I get when I see an angbang (morgoth x sauron silmarillion, for the uninitiated) fanart. Have I made them a shrine? No. Do I worship Manwe or Varda? No. Do you draw any number of characters kissing? Yes.

You can also have a fandom related to content based on your religion so long as you can look at it and say, this isn't real, obviously, these are someone's OC's based off my gods. Like for example the game HADES, which I do believe is most the excellent in their portrayals of most of the gods compared to other modern media, but do I ship the actual deity Hermes with Charon? Or Thanatos with Zagreus? No.

I've just noticed a lot of people struggle to differentiate between them, and I couldn't find the line but after thought I think the line is when it changes your values and your life to the point you believe things you did not before it has become a religion and with fandom it is significantly more superficial... Nobody has a religion based on D&D (that I've heard of) but people can incorporate their religion into D&D and I think that's beautiful.

Just some thoughts.

So you guys may not know this about me but I'm deeply chronically online, like, so badly online that it could count as a full time job, or a disease, even, but today???

I'm gonna formally thank Lord Hermes here because I told him I was stealing back my time and look at this!! It's like, way less.

I hope this inspires someone because I know how bad internet addiction is and want to show that it's possible to get offline..

Hellenic Polytheist version of Christmas where Dionysus' birth is celebrated through singing and dancing by firelight. People drink wine, dance in various animal masks crowned with ivy, and shake their thyrsos to the god. To keep warm, they light a bonfire and throw in symbolic items representing their worries/problems, showing them letting the problems go. After three days (representing the three times Dionysus lives) of different forms of celebration pass, everybody spends an evening resting and telling stories about the year - good and bad.

Dionysus rides in a flying chariot with eight leopards, all crowned with ivy (and sometimes a ninth leopard with glowing eyes at the front, depending on what you believe). He gives wine and delicious food to those who were good throughout the year but leaves strangely ominous objects to those who were bad (one half of a pair of scissors, rotten grapes, a disembodied lion head, etc.).

If only my ideas could be brought into reality; it would be so fun. 😮‍💨😔

To add on other festive things

People keep pinecones around, maybe hung on a plant like a vine or a pine

They wear leopard print much like people wear Santa hats.

People might even go support local theatre and be more charitable to things like women's shelters...

Oooohhh or maybe a community effort to dress a statue or snow sculpture of Lord Dionysus that you keep in the home in place of snowmen and Christmas trees

If only it was real because you're onto something here...

YESSSS omg, I love these additions!!! Instead of mistletoe, people kiss under the pinecone. Instead of leaving out milk and cookies, it's wine and home-made bread with honey. The plays are all different genres over the course of the three celebration days. For real, if only it were real. It sure could be, but likely not on a national scale. 😔

The Easter bunny, the egg hunt, the rooster imagery that at least my family had around...

Always will admire Dionysus story, to be that of a "hero's journey"

He lived in hiding, a life to understand his godly powers, survived kings, a vengeful queen, went to wars, had to prove himself spread his cult , yet constantly getting underestimated, looked down upon, but still persisting.

After finally achieving godhood the last obstacle being a seat among the gods looking unreachable,only for the grace from one goddess to finally seal his journey complete

I have always adored how caring and loving Hermes is to his siblings especially to Dionysus. The love and dedication to Dionysus, to raise him despite the dangers, he was always there for him in his ups and downs.
