mrs. hailey mason was born hailey elizabeth pacino on june 26, 1991. she’s two minutes and thirteen seconds younger than her twin sister. most people call her hailey or a shortened variation, but her sister always called her lizard because of her middle name

hailey had a really good childhood. she was never a “bad” kid, just rambunctious and wild. she’s still pretty much the same way as an adult, but knows when to keep it serious

she’s married to the absolute love of her life, who she’d gone to school with since kindergarten. they were best friends from the start, they started dating in middle school, and at 14, her freshman year of high school... hailey and her boyfriend (now husband) ended up pregnant with their oldest daughter, leah. they were both scared shitless, but hailey’s parents were very supportive not only mentally and emotionally, but financially until she and hubby could start working

four years later at 18, her freshman year of college, hailey found out she was pregnant with baby number two, which was their first son brandon. again, they were scared because leah was just barely out of toddlerhood (and diapers) and they were going through the same thing all over again. it was a lot smoother this time - they were both adults, they were both working, hailey was going to college to get her teaching degree. they were much more settled. it was also at 18 that hailey and hubby tied the knot, on hailey's birthday, and she figured out that mister brandon was their honeymoon baby. fast forward two years, tucker is born and was the first planned baby. then five years down the road they tried for one last baby to try for another girl, but were still pleasantly surprised to find that milo was a third little boy. they decided they were done having kids. they had four already and were very blessed and couldn't be happier. and four years later... they celebrated valentine's day a little early, hailey got a little suspicious when she started feeling nauseous all the time, she peed on a stick and was extremely surprised to find out that she was pregnant a fifth time - especially because this time was the only time she was on birth control, since they decided milo was their last baby. so little miss sadie was born on halloween of 2021 and as soon as hailey recovered enough from childbirth, she had her tubes tied because she and hubby are definitely done having babies

she’s a high school english teacher, but she’s one of the fun teachers that isn’t super strict as long as you’re not a brat or constantly causing problems just to cause problems. she’s only ever kicked one student out of her class in her years of teaching. you can eat in her class, you can drink whatever you want in your class, you can wear your hats and hoodies and you can play on your phones... as long as your work gets done first, she doesn’t care what you do. just be respectful and don’t take advantage of your privileges and she won’t become the strict boring teacher

she’s not just a mom... she’s a cool mom. the mason house is where all the teens in the neighborhood hang out. she lets them do what they want as long as it’s legal and not going to get anyone hurt. they can play their music as loud as they want (until it gets dark, then it’s “turn that shit down, our neighbors are ninety years old and don’t need to know how nicki minaj ‘takes it’”). there are several of her oldest daughter’s friends that call her mom (which melts her heart bc those are her babies too) and are over so often they have a house key. she loves her kids’ friends as much as she loves her kids

she’s still a teen at heart. hailey is one of those people that can hang out with the teens like a teen. she’s friends with the kids’ friends (but not in a weird way) but she’s also friends with the friends’ parents (and no, she doesn’t rat those kids out - she’s a freaking cool mom)

hailey is very outspoken, but she’s respectful about it. she is one of the rare people that understand that not everyone will agree with something she says, and that’s perfectly fine with her, she just wants them to understand what she means and says - they don’t have to have the same opinion as her

she’s nonjudgmental. about anything. if you’re trying to do right with your life, she’s supporting you. she’ll always be the person to cheer someone on when they’re trying to positively change something about themselves; she believes in forgiveness (depending on what the action was) and second chances (and third and hundred chances if that’s how many it takes to get it right) and believes that no one is inherently evil or bad at heart. she tries to see the good in people

now let’s talk about the bad stuff about hailey... she’s irritating. she’s nosy. she’s a bit of a gossip, but if it’s about something that she personally wouldn’t want people knowing about herself, she won’t talk about it about someone else (did any of that make sense, cause this is a mess)

she can also be dramatic. most times it’s in a funny way, but she can get a bit too overdramatic at times

don’t be afraid to call her out. if she’s wrong about something, tell her why. she’ll apologize and do more research on the subject. but if she knows she’s right... she’ll tell you and give you the facts. if she says something offensive, tell her, because she definitely didn’t mean to be offensive, but she wants to apologize for it. if she does something that irritates you, tell her. she’ll stop. if you don’t want her to mention a particular subject, tell her. and she she slips, tell her. she’ll apologize to make it right

hailey is obsessed with space and the universe and science. she fought so hard to name sadie jupiter or mars instead, but she and hubby compromised. the name conversation went kinda like “babe... i really love jupiter for a little girl.” “absolutely not.” “i really love mars too.” “no.” “but i -” “hailey, this is our last baby... it’s our last chance to not fuck this one up, so let’s start that by not giving her a name she’s gonna put us in a retirement home for”

right off the bat, baz could tell that the woman seemed to have even more on her plate than he did, which made him feel almost worse about running into her like that. “well, at least you were texting, i don’t even have that excuse. just lost in my own thoughts, i guess,” baz offered with a laugh and a shrug, one hand reaching up to run through his hair absentmindedly, as he spared a thought to hope he maybe wouldn’t embarrass himself any further in this conversation than he already had. her next words made him raise his eyebrows. “wow, really? that’s impressive. i somehow get knocked down every day by a nine pound cat,” he admitted with a sigh. “are you sure i can’t pay?” 

“it’s a terrible habit, honestly,” she said with a nod. “it happens to me too. i get lost thinking about things and then bam, i run right into someone.” hailey laughed a little and nodded. “yeah, he thinks he’s a lap dog. sweetest big guy ever, but he thinks he’s way smaller than he actually is,” she said. “no, i couldn’t let you do that. i have four angry hot chocolate addicts at the house and it gets expensive after everything gets added in to make ‘em happy. maybe next time? i’m here all the time, i practically live here.”

The more she spoke, the less Mal understood. He was sure that the look of confusion on his face was comical, the sort that would come with question marks floating above his head if this were an animated movie. “I have no idea,” he finally answered, setting the plant back down. “Guess I can’t really keep one alive if I know nothing about it, huh?” 

“well, not necessarily. cacti plants are actually pretty easy to care for, you just need to make sure you’re doing the right thing for it. don’t get discouraged, you just have to do the research. the cashier might be able to tell you what species it is - but if you wanna start with something super easy, you could try an aloe vera plant. they’re a cacti succulent and it’s a step in the right direction. plus, it’s medicinal and is a natural remedy with certain things,” hailey said. “just make sure you water it every few days and you’re golden."

sebastián let out a sigh of much needed relief as he stepped inside the warm cafe, already dreading the moment he’d have to walk back outside. it wasn’t as if he was from very far away. new jersey was quite a drive down the east coast, but still; he wondered how he’d managed to this far in his life without ever actually acclimating to the cold weather. he pulled off the gloves he was wearing to rub his hands together, probably bordering on desperately — a long, full day of cases at the courthouse plus a less-than-fully-functioning central heating system meant that he was tired, chilly, and in dire need of a coffee after the kind of day he’d had.

these were the kinds of thoughts occupying his brain as his feet started to walk on autopilot, somehow entirely missing the person who was also walking in the same direction towards the line. baz ran into them with an ungraceful stumble, already letting out a small curse under his breath to himself. “shit, i’m so sorry,” he immediately apologized profusely, and okay, maybe the cursing wasn’t so completely under his breath. oh well. his hand reached out automatically in case the other person needed steadying. “my fault, i’m an idiot. not all the time, but definitely today,” he rambled with a sigh. “i can buy you a coffee to make up for it?” 

she hated calling in to work on the last day of the week, but all of the mason kids except the baby were sick. she couldn’t leave them all at the house alone. if it was just leah and brandon, it would have been a little different because they could essentially take care of themselves, but since tucker and milo were under the weather too, and her husband couldn’t stay home, she’d just have to have a sub for her class. thankfully, she was able to give the school a 24-hour notice because milo started not feeling well first, so she would have had to stay home anyways. then the other three fell into line soon after. and she knew they weren’t faking it like they sometimes did - they all had fevers. so, after mr. mason went to work, she took sadie over to her sister’s house so she wouldn’t catch whatever the others had, and the promised to bring hot chocolate home - so that’s why she was at the cafe. unfortunately, she wasn’t paying attention because she was texting leah to let her know she’d be home soon and she felt herself colliding with someone else. “no no, you’re good - i wasn’t even watching where i was walking, i was texting. i always say i’ll learn one day - today is apparently not that day,” hailey said with a small laugh. “no, i couldn’t ask you to do that. i’m fine, i promise. i get knocked down by a 200 pound great dane daily, i can handle a little collision.”

gabz had spent the better half of an hour talking to an older man that gave her the absolute creeps. it seemed he was moving around the club quite a lot to be near her. eventually, after avoiding him for a bit, she decided she had to give him a reason to leave her alone. gabz slid into a seat at the bar beside someone and gave them a bright smile. “so, uh, hey. i’m avoiding that weirdo over there,” she said, nodding her head in the direction of the much older man without being too obvious. “i told him i was here with a good friend of mine, but i think he was catching on that i came here alone. do you mind hanging here with me a bit until he gets bored? i’ll buy you a drink,” she said, letting out a slight shaky breath between her cherry-painted lips.

when she realized the person that sat next to her was speaking to her, she put her phone down and her eyes followed where she was pointing as discreetly as possible before looking back and giving the other girl a smile. “sure, not a problem. anything to help a fellow lady out,” she said. “if he’s been harassing you, that bartender on the end, rosie? she’ll kick him out. she doesn’t tolerate it,” hailey said. “are you okay?”

This was a stupid idea, Malachi thought as he clutched the small potted plant in his hands. Between his schedule and Athena’s exuberance, this little guy was doomed. Still, his place needed some brightening up and plants were the easiest way to do that, weren’t they? “For clarification purposes.” he began, turning to the person beside him. “Cacti are virtually indestructible, right?”

hailey gave him a smile and nodded. “pretty much, yeah. you wanna make sure you’re giving the right regimen to the right plant, though. do you know what kind it is? is it a lophophora, gymnocalycium, opuntia? there's others, but those are the most common."

There was a part of Eli that was ashamed at how easily he’d nodded along in agreement with that reference. Not that he was surprised. Noah was a big fan of the animated singing crab. “I don’t know how you do it.” He ran a hand through his hair fingers passing over the piercing in his brow; he was exhausted just listening to her talk about all of her kids. “I have just this one and I feel like I can’t keep up sometimes.” He laughed at the end of the statement, shrugging off the honesty behind it. “I can’t imagine having more.” 

“well, for starters - i go through every single name before i call the right kid the right name. brandon and tucker, they’ll answer to each others names because they know who i mean by the tone of my voice. milo corrects me, sadie reacts to any name because she only reacts to sound and sight, but leah. she gets salty. i call her the wrong name and she says ‘how do you forget the name of the child that changed your life?’ and i can’t even come back at her because she’s a teenager and she’s better at the sass game - which i taught her, so it’s insulting,” hailey said with a small laugh. “i guess being a mom for so long to so many i learned to multitask. it’s also helpful to be on their good sides. my kiddos can do whatever they wanna do as long as no one’s gonna get hurt, they’re allowed to have friends over whenever they want. i have boundaries and rules, but i’m pretty slack unless they’re grounded. i do what works best for each kid, they all have different rules and consequences. parenting’s not universal, it’s individual to each experience. i think a lot of people fail to realize that when they start judging others, yanno?”

With it agreed they head off to Chuckies, Jim was quick to finish what was left of his pint and headed for the exit, rather pleased to have stepped outside into the cold night, straying away from the mixed stench of alcohol and body odour. “Ah fuck, d’ya smell that? Nothin’ but fresh air mate.” He inhaled a deep breath and exhaled as he looked up towards the nights sky. “Mm yeah.. I’m a sucker for the burgers mate. We cabbing this or walking?”

“cold air always smells nice. smells like... ice. my sister makes fun of me for it, but i’ve eaten crushed ice since i was a kid because i like to smell it when it’s straight out of the freezer. in plastic cups, though. not glass. glass cups stink,” she said. “uh... i say we walk there, and then cab share back home? kill two birds with one stone,” hailey said with a small shrug.

Sometimes, Jim simply didn’t understand women. Was it a jealousy thing that this other chick needed to tell Hailey’s husband everything? Or maybe she was just an absolute twat. Whatever the situation, Jim deemed it unnecessary. The idea of grabbing some food sounded nice, nodding his head in agreement. “Chuckies? I’m sure it’s open at this time.” He suggests, averting his gaze towards his watch. 

the woman she’d pointed out was not only a work office gossip - she was a gossip in general. she went to school with the woman and she was just as bad in high school as she was now. anytime hailey was seen by her and she happened to be talking to a man, it was circled back to her husband. thankfully, they had a strong relationship and didn’t have stupid ‘rules’ about not talking to the opposite genders. besides, they’d been married for 12 years now, and a couple for close to 20. they trusted each other and neither of them gave the other a reason to need to not trust one another. when nosy nancy told her husband of anything, when they sat down for the night, mr. mason would say ‘word on the street is...’ and whatever was said. she didn’t know what this woman’s issue was with her, but hailey kept her distance. “sure, that works for me. their wraps are to die for.”

“Hm, makes me look like a creep now, right..” Jim laughed as he reached towards the bar for his pint, before looking over towards the woman who was obviously staring at the both of them, offering her a gentle wave before turning back towards Hailey. “Ahh let her gossip mate.. i’m assuming your husband trusts you enough init? And honestly.. I have no fucking idea. Where d’ya wanna head off to?”

"nah, she's legal. barely," she joked. "i don't even have to let her, she just does it like it's a source of income," hailey said with a small laugh before nodding. "yeah, he does. he's stuck with me for life. i can't reach the cabinets without him around," she said. "we can go somewhere less chaotic and eat, cause i can't remember the last time i ate. i dunno if you heard it, but my stomach just called me a bitch."

matthew tries not to play favourites in his classes, but every year there’s always at least once exceptional student, in exceptional circumstances, that he allows extra time to assist. it has been a very long time since hailey was in matthew’s lecture room, but they managed to stay in contact over the years — matthew still immensely proud of the young mother who defied any and all odds against her to be one of his best students. 

he’s running a bit late. staff meetings at the university occasionally ran over time, but he managed to shoot a quick message to hailey, apologising for his tardiness. upon arrival at the cafe, he’s quick to repeat the apols, briefcase resting beside his seat he neatly shuffles in. “once again im sorry for being late.” he pushes his glasses further up the bridge of his nose, “how are you hailey?”

the one thing hailey disliked about college was that most of her professors acted like school was more important than her kids and that she should never miss a class. matthew was different. he'd always understood, and she was able to make up any assignments she missed if she had to skip a class for something to do with the kids, like a doctor's appointment or something to do with their own schooling. she was really glad that they'd kept in touch after she graduated, because anytime she needed advice on how to deal with a certain situation, she could go to him - which she's done here and there. hailey ended up being the same way - understanding when her students were having a hard time and giving them the extra time to complete assignments if they needed that extra time. she was excited when they ended up making plans to meet at the diner and catch up. the other kids were at home with her husband, but she did bring sadie. when he texted her and let her know he was running late, she took that opportunity to feed the baby and get her back in her carseat, which was sitting next to her on the booth, so she wouldn't have to deal with a cranky sadie. just as she popped a binky in the two-month-old's mouth, he arrived and she gave him a smile. "nah, it's alright, i remember how class overran sometimes," she said. "i'm good. i wish the holiday break had been a little longer because i wasn't ready for my maternity leave to end, but the first week back's been pretty good. doing the normal mom and wife stuff, like keeping the husband out of home depot because we have enough tools taking up our garage and keeping my kids from burning the house down with their weird science experiments they got from youtube," hailey said with a small laugh. "how've you been?"

“well sure, but that’s based on the thought that there’s only two genders too, right? which is a bit old fashioned, if you ask me.” remy replies with s shrug, not wanting to get into a debate about it. nature versus nurture didn’t matter much to him. what mattered most as parents were that their children were happy and healthy. “babies are pretty great. until they won’t stop crying when all you want to do is sleep. that’s always the worst.” 

hailey nodded. “that’s my understanding of what i read. they used ‘boy’ and ‘girl’ instead of ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ or female or male-presenting or nonbinary, so it was definitely based on biological or physical anatomy. they talked a lot about genetics and chromosomes having to do with it, which is why, i assume, they weren’t exclusive with other genders and identifications. in the end, it really just depends on the specific person, i think. all of my kids are completely different, despite ‘gender norms’. something or someone being ‘normal’ is subjective anyways. everyone has their own version of normal, so it’s not really fair to clump it all together the way a lot of people do,” she said. she laughed a little and pointed at sadie. “that’s her. she’ll scream her head off. we try the binky, we try diaper changes, feedings, trying to get her to sleep, we try her cuddle toys, all to find out she wanted the blue binky, not the pink one.”

“I’m almost convinced that he’s part magpie,” Eli joked. “That or part bloodhound. Kid’s got the ability to spot things from a mile away. If it’s shiny, he’s going to find it, and he’s going to pocket it. I can’t begin to tell you the amount of times my keys have gone missing only to pop up in his stuff.” Eli huffed exasperatedly. Even still, his fondness for his son was obvious. “Anyway, enough about my klepto. How’s your brood?”

"it's always the shiny stuff with kids, isn't it? maybe they're just tamatoa in his human manifestation," she joked. and it was in that moment she realized they watched moana at the mason house way too often. "they're good. you know leah, teenagery as ever. brandon and tucker have been doing 'science experiments' over christmas break and have ruined two brand new blenders, this guy has been especially clingy," she said, ruffling milo's hair. "and sadie's... kinda boring, just eats, sleeps, and poops, so... not much to say about her - except that she rolled over on her own the other day. i don't think it was on purpose, but it happened and now brandon has this insane ideaology that she's gonna be a super genius, but i think what happened was she was just crying so hard because i was clearly starving her while i took five seconds to get a water bottle before feeding her, and she got mad enough and kicked hard enough that she just kinda... rolled. such a drama queen, i'll have to look out for her."

“stevie’s our only child. she’s a good kid, though i’m 100% biased when i say that.” remy muses, a quiet laugh leaving his lips. stevie really was the light of his life. the two of them were pretty close as far as parents and children went, though their circumstances were pretty unique. “i wouldn’t really know. though i don’t think gender really has much to do with it. personality is really where it’s at.” 

"i was convinced leah would be our only baby because we were so young when we had her, but here we are with five," she said. "i'm moving out if there's anymore 'we have some news' talks. every time we have one of those talks, it's a baby," leah said. hailey rolled her eyes playfully. "i can't have anymore, you know that. stay off my nerves though, i'll have it reversed just to spite you one day," she joked. hailey nodded at his statement. "that's partly true - mostly personality, of course, but there's also biological, genetic, neurological and chemical reasons why certain aspects of a child are 'gendered', if that makes sense. studies show that boys are usually easier to raise and it has something to do with genetics and their biology - i don't know exactly how it works. but it's definitely not true for us. except milo, he's my sweet little guy," she said, kissing milo's head. "the baby's definitely the easiest, though. she either wants to eat, needs a diaper change, or needs a nap. it's one of three things, it doesn't take long to figure out."

“Uhh twenty six.. Somethin’ like that.” There was eleven years between this girl and Jim, though it wasn’t as if a relationship was something he was looking for right now. He’d been put off for the rest of his life following his divorce, though the company would have been nice. A light chuckle exhaled through James’ lips as Hailey spoke of an easy way out, shaking his head. “Nah.. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid idea but she knows about my divorce so.. knows I’m single but, I’m all for leaving this shithole.”

"oh, so still a kid - makes sense," she shrugged. she was only four years older than the girl they were speaking of, but that was a big enough age gap for her to consider her a kid still, even though she hated it when people still thought of her as a kid at that age. she was married and had kids of her own at twenty-six, so being called a kid was irritating to say the least. "well, maybe it's a good thing that plan won't work, i just caught a glimpse of one of my husband's co-workers and she's a bit of a gossip, so lord knows she'll be talking about seeing me talking to another man at the office tomorrow. i vote we leave too, there's nothing fun to do anymore. where'd your date go, anyways? she doesn't seem to be very interested if she's not even spending time with you."

“Don’t get me wrong yeah, it was nice of her to ask me out on this date but never did I think it’d be here.” James couldn’t remember the last time he’d stepped foot into a nightclub, but what else did he expect when his twenty six year old client asked him out for a drink? It was a nice gesture and it did make Jim feel wanted, although he had no idea where she’d been hiding for the last forty five minutes. Thank god he’d bumped into someone familiar. “I’m quite tempted to ditch to be honest mate, is that bad? I feel like a granpa standing ‘ere”

“well, how old is she? cause maybe she’s just at that age where clubbing is all the rage,” hailey said. did people still say ‘all the rage’ these days? was she an old lady now? she didn’t think thirty was old, but if you asked a newer generation kid, oh yeah - she was ancient. “yanno what, i feel like a grandmother too, half the people here don’t even look old enough to be here. i wouldn’t even be here if the husband hadn’t dragged me out - and then he dipped for an emergency at work. i don’t even know why i stayed. i say we ditch this place together. if we run into her, i’ve got my wedding ring on. we see her and she comes up to us, we’re married. it’s an easy out.”

“mine’s twenty six.” remy admits with a soft laugh, shrugging his shoulders. sometimes he wondered if he and leo would’ve adopted more children if things had turned out differently, but he also loved stevie with all of his heart and wouldn’t change a single thing about their relationship. “let’s see…” reaching for his wallet, remy thumbs through it, producing a band aid from the change compartment. “my job comes with the risk of papercuts, so i usually keep a couple on me. here you go.” 

“ah, i remember being twenty-six... spent most of it on the couch, in bed, or in the kitchen cause this little guy made me tired and hungry all the time,” she said, giving milo’s sides a gentle tickle, earning a giggle. “look, see, we got a band-aid, your knee will feel better in no time. can you tell him ‘thank you’?” hailey said as she put the band-aid on his knee quickly and expertly - and after fifteen years of tending to owwies, she was definitely an expert. “thank you,” milo said, leaning against his mother. “mom! mommy! can we go to the ice cream truck?!” tucker asked as he and his brother ran up to the bench. “it’s fifty degrees, tucker,” hailey said. “yeah, but they have the spongebob one!” “jesus - i guess, whatever. my purse is in the diaper bag. you have to actually eat it this time though, it’s not staying in my freezer for a year. ice cream is a food, not a collectible!” she called after the boys as they ran off. “...i was under the assumption that my boys would be my easy kids, but my girls are way easier,” hailey said.
