#TilesOnTuesday :
āWinged porcine beastā
China, 6th or 7th c. (Northern Qi or Tang dynasty)
Earthenware w/ appliquƩ & glazed decoration
On display at Princeton University Art Museum (1996-289)
āThese glazed, reddish earthenware tiles are molded into high-relief depictions of fantastic beastsā¦Comparisons with the designs of Northern Qi (550-577) stone-relief figures from the Xiangtangshan cave temples in Hebei province suggest a contemporaneous date; however, the tile's glazing technique is associated with the Tang dynasty. The tiles probably lined the walls or platform of a pagoda or tomb; at least twenty-four other tiles from the same set are known to survive.ā

although they're a fairly generic if slightly spikier brown Andricus orb later in life, Andricus quercustozae galls start out as swollen green buds that quickly turn into these pleasant little cartoon suns. they also attract lots of parasitoids for bonus critter sightings, but you need to be careful when photographing those up close - not because they're easily scared, but because the galls are real icky sticky at this stage
