In 1980, photographer Anita Corbin decided to turn her lens on the young women of UK subcultures. Over the next two years, rockabillies, mods, goths, rude girls, skinheads, rastas and more posed for Corbin and opened up about what it was like to be a young woman navigating an alt scene, and the importance of female friendships.

America’s pungent corpse flowers are all mysteriously blooming at once

Botanists across the US are trying to figure out why so many titan arums – better known as corpse flowers – are blooming simultaneously around the country this year.

This is super weird, because there have only been 157 recorded blooms ever between 1889 and 2008. But this year in the US alone, at least seven flowers have bloomed.

I live in the UK and though people love to pretend we don’t have problems with racism and police brutality, we do.

A government investigation found our police “institutionally racist” (x)

Over 1500 people have died in, or following, police custody in the U.K. since 1990. Not a single police officer has been successfully prosecuted. (x)

3000 police officers are were under investigation for assault last year. Less than 2% were suspended or put on restricted duties.

Where I live in the West Midlands, half of assault complaints against police come from PoC – though we make up just 14 per cent of the population (x)

The proportion of black people in jail in the U.K. is almost seven times their share of the population, whereas in the U.S. the proportion of black prisoners is four times greater than their population share. (x)

In the U.K, a black person is less likely to be shot dead on the streets than their counterpart in America. But we are more likely to be detained with brute force and left to die at the hands of neglectful officers. (x)

Like, we really have to stop pretending these things don’t happen in other countries too, that the mechanics of racism and police impunity operate solely in the US of A.
