Happy (189th) birthday to Hijikata Toshizou! Last month was spent chasing his back by visiting several places related to the Shinsengumi in Japan (Kyoto, Itabashi (Tokyo), Aizu...) and going to see Musical Hakuouki Shinkai - Hijikata Toshizou hen in person.

Today, I'm still riding that high and going through the memories. Hakuouki's Hijikata Toshizou has become a very important character to me, but I do not forget the history he was based on.

I redrew this from one of the Shinkai Saitou Hajime hen bromides.

Wow, this picture was a bit rough to paint. I made the bad decision of trying to do realistic shading and coloring, despite wanting to keep an anime styled otome game aesthetic. It took a bit of work to get it, but I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out in the long run! It definitely feels more painterly than my usual stuff.
