Your mood sours evidently from the two's eyes as you held your phone tightly, heaving deep breaths you didn't even realize. They share a look before peeking at your phone and rubbing your back, cutting your trance short.
"Sorry, we were doing?" You tried tucking your phone in the crevice of your sofa, smiling at them. They only squint their eyes before taking the phone from you and making you hold it once again, patting you.
"I know this is our moment, but," Jurin sighs, "This is your chance. You might've not said it out loud, but you know yourself this is what you've been wanting to hear from him all along. Not the apologies he carelessly spat around not knowing what he's apologizing for, but now, a genuine one." Jurin snakes his arms around your shoulder and leans on your shoulder.
"She's right, of course, it's what you've always deserved to hear, especially from him. But regardless, this is still your choice to make. Whether you want to face him or not, hear what he wants to say or not, this is your choice. No one is going to blame you with what you choose. Okay?" Hinata smiles at you and takes the other side, patting your knee.
You feel Jurin nod on your shoulder, making you smile sweetly from their support. You take in the atmosphere for a few more seconds before breaking your silence with a single clap, getting their attention.
You chuckle, "Don't you think we're too cramped on my tiny sofa?" Both of them realized how the three of you literally stuck like sardines in a can on your sofa before giggling it away, not minding their positions as they go back into hugging you.
They were your real life saviors from then on, huh?
You assure them by the night that you were going to be okay agreeing to meet Changmin and alone after your afternoon classes the day after, and that you were sure about your decision.
Because just like what Jurin said, it had always been what you wanted to hear from Changmin all along. The genuine apology, wherein he knew what he did wrong.
So why were you trembling so bad and frozen on your place as you hold on your bag strap for life before you walk to your designated meeting place, all hesitant and anxious to see a familiar head amidst the crowd?
The head that sticks out everywhere a little higher than everybody's, a shaking of the head too distinct to know it was him arranging his hair to cover his forehead a little more, making its way closer to you.
He grew his hair a little longer that it stopped below his eyes, covering it slightly that you could still his eyes behind a few strands. It bore through you completely, you had to look away multiple times as it burned you. You were wronged, yet you didn't like how his apologetic eyes settled on you. You weren't used to it— you can't and never will.
He had always given you the look of love, even after you broke up and had to meet up for Ghana. It held the same amount of love and fondness, yet now, it was nowhere to be seen. Just pure pathetic eyes staring at you.
Because Changmin doesn't dare. How dare he look at you like how he did when you were together after what he did? How dare he treat you the same after what he did? How dare he even look your way? How dare he?
"I'll... keep this short," He sighs, sensing your discomfort with his stare so he looks down to your hand, reaching for it and handing you Ghana's leash and a bag of Ghana's things. This is when he realized you have only then noticed Ghana, a small smile playing on your lips as your eyes landed on the dog that once knew the both of you as owners. Ghana held his paws out for you, scratching your leg lightly.
You were confused, but you don't say anything. Maybe Changmin remembered it was your scheduled parenting for Ghana.
"...Y/n. I was wrong." He started, and you both can't meet each other's eyes. "I was immature. I thought so shortly that time, and I understand why you left. At first, I was confused. We dated for years, how come she breaks up with me after I failed to answer her texts and calls? I thought to myself,"
He helplessly scoffs at himself, and the next thing you know, you saw tears drop from his eyes to the ground.
"And I feel so so terrible for even thinking of that, y/n, and I'm just so so sorry. I'm sorry for not being able to, I'm sorry for pushing you away, I'm sorry for shutting you out, I'm sorry for choosing a goddamn party over you, I... I'm sorry, y/n." He sighs out, breaking down into tears as he struggled to keep himself standing.
He looked like a kid who got in trouble, head hanging low as he messily wiped his tears away. How dare he even cry in front of you?
You stayed quiet, letting him say all that he's got to say even though you've got his point, and you've got what you wanted to hear, and somehow, in one corner of your mind, have already forgiven him.
"Y/n, I'm sorry you had to go through that all alone. I'm sorry that I didn't realize that I left you first before you did. I'm sorry that I didn't know, I'm sorry that I wasn't there. I'm even sorry that I only got to apologize now, y/n." He holds onto his knees for dear life, sobbing it away. This wasn't even a quarter of the pain you felt, he thought.
And that thought makes him even more angry at himself. He clutches his chest tight, trying to stop the sobs from coming out but he fails. He feels Ghana lie down beside his foot and whimpers with him, bringing him back to reality after a few minutes.
He thinks you didn't have to hear all that, and you didn't have to stay through that, so he gathers all his energy again and straightens his back, sniffing heavily.
"I... put Ghana's food and necessities, some clothes there in the bag." He gives you a tight-lipped smile, nodding at the bag he gave you. Haknyeon told me you always asked about Ghana." Your eyes drop to the bag and at Ghana, hold tightening on the leash. "Keep him. You've always adored him and the one who wanted him first. Besides, I think Ghana likes you better." He chuckles, crouching down to pet Ghana who senses his leave, tail wagging ever so softly. "I'll get Ghana's other things delivered at Haknyeon's, and he can give it to you. If you need babysitting, you can ask Sunwoo for it and the both of us will manage."
He briefs you through the dog decision without even glancing at you, and even as he stands up. He still had his head hang low, hands empty with nothing to hold now. Not you, not Ghana, not even Ghana's things.
"Thank you for hearing me out, y/n." His head buries deeper in his chest, sniffing once again. "I'm sorry for the pain I caused, when I should've been the one who helped you through it," He nods at himself, taking a few seconds before he finally meets your eyes, pulling a big smile to face you. His face was damp, cheeks, nose and lips swelling and red from all the crying that he did.
His eyes now held nothing, just lifeless ones staring at you. You didn't know which one you preferred, was it the earlier ones, or were it these ones?
Of course, you'll pick the eyes that held love for you every single chance you get to choose. You'll pick the eyes that looked at you as if you were his whole world, so fragile that was afraid that when he touches you, you'll fade. You'll choose that every chance you get.
But now, you weren't sure you were ever going to see that again. Your eyes well up upon the thought, staring back and seeing though his eyes if there was even a soul inside. There wasn't. It was just pure darkness in it, so empty, so cold.
"Be well, y/n." Yet you felt the warmth and genuineness of his last words before he turns around and makes his leave, tucking his hands in his pockets as he walks down the road alone, with the lamps guiding him home.
The home he had always adored, the home that he had shared with you and your dog.
But now, he was left with nothing. Not with you, not with your dog Ghana. He was left with memories— pictures, endless pictures. But what use was it? Both you and Ghana were gone. He wasn't even sure if he was still himself after this.
At the end of the day, it was only his treasured pictures, his pillow, his tears and regrets beside him.

CHAPTER 17.1 ! # ... the difference between home and a house !? (flashback cont)
wc: 933 + 3 images; warnings: swearing/cursing, minor charac death
“Where’s your fucking boyfriend when you need him?” Your father curses through his teeth, tears in his eyes due to the perfectly fresh news of his wife passing away. He can’t bear seeing his daughter also having to break down in front of him with no one to lean on. He can’t have you leaning on him, when his life had just ended with his wife’s life.
“Dad,” You manage to lifelessly retort, glaring at him with blurred eyes. You were just as heartbroken— and with Changmin being unable to answer your phone calls and text messages, you were alone in that hallway. You were alone despite your father being physically there. You were really alone when you finally stood up in a hurry when Changmin returned a mere thirty second-call, basically telling you to suck it up and if you don’t, just call your other friends because he can’t leave a damn party. And yes— he didn’t know why— he didn’t ask— he didn’t let you tell him what happened. Just— call your other friends. You had friends.
“y/n.” You hear Hinata and Jurin running up to you in a hurry, tears already in their eyes as they embrace you tightly in their arms and rub your back. You hadn’t even stopped crying, yet more tears escaped your eyes and a sob finally reached someone’s ears after holding it for so long. “Uncle said you’ve been here in this position for hours already, y/n. And he doesn’t seem to be doing so well himself. Let’s get you home, hmm?” Jurin wipes your tears as you messily nod at her, glancing at the morgue for the last time before letting them drag you home.
“I’m so sorry we were late, y/n.” Hinata sighs, reaching for your hand. Jurin quietly drove and continuously glanced through the rear mirror, nodding. “What did Changmin say? Is he on the way?”
“He said to call you. I wasn’t planning to, since you had classes.” You blurt out lifelessly, rasp in your voice due to being unable to talk for hours and crying. Hinata had a sour expression on, speechless. “He doesn’t know. He didn’t ask. Haknyeon’s on the way, though.” No one uttered another word until you were finally on your humble abode, graced by your dad locked in his room. Jurin and Hinata knew you were not just heartbroken with the passing of your mom who you weren’t able to see in months, but also heartbroken with the fact that your boyfriend wasn’t able to ask what happened, how you were, or just anything. You’d even take if he asked if you were still alive.
But not even that was given to you.
“I’d ask you guys if you wanted something to drink, but I’m too tired to do so. Haknyeon will. He’s probably a kilometer or two near.” You smiled at them and proceeded to close your room door, sparing them a glance as they nodded at you. You sigh, opening your door once again after a few seconds. They perk up and wait for you to speak, and you smile at them gratefully. “Thank you for coming, guys. You can leave whenever. Be safe.”
“Y/n, take your time mourning, okay? We’ll be right by you.” You smile for the last time before shutting them out, letting the four walls be your view for the whole day. Those said walls full of memories you made growing up— hugging your mom to sleep, hearing her read you bedtime stories until you drifted, calling for her when you got your first period, or when you hit puberty and openly shouted back at her, when you happily called her when you passed your university college. Everything. And that one corner you have that had a picture of your family with Changmin, when you first officially introduced him.
The next second you were crying once again, drowning in your own tears as it pooled your worn out pillows.
To top your week off, having to feel being trampled on, thrown away all the while you were desperate and vulnerable by your boyfriend, you timed packing all your things up and breaking the news to him once he step foot in your shared apartment.
His eyes roam around the bags you packed and your tired eyes, planning to even engulf you in a tight hug before you push his arms down, declining it.
“Changmin, let’s end this.” You barely let out a whisper, unable to keep your eyes on him. You hear Ghana’s paws running around from his water and to his bed, even sniffing your foot and your bags as he jumped on you to welcome you home.
Changmin’s face drops and scrunches when he hears you, craning his neck confusingly. “Baby, what do you mean?” He reaches for your hands desperately, thumb rubbing the back of your palm to calm you down. “W-what do you mean? What do you mean end? No, no… I don’t want to,”
But you don’t say anything more. You just let him load your words onto his brain, even if it meant carving it letter by letter. And by the next minute, you let him drown in his own misery (as if you weren’t), breaking free of his hold on you and leaving him on his own with your self-proclaimed child.
He can’t even stand on his own two feet as he came stumbling on the floor the moment he let go of you, hearing the door unlocking and locking that signaled your leave. You left. You left your home— and your house.

You visibly shake as you stand before the door, taking continuous heavy breaths to calm yourself. Ghana seemed to sense your uneasiness and dragged its paws gently by the front ball of your shoe, then at the door. You nod at Ghana, closing your eyes tightly and taking one last heavy breath, and then violently shaking your hand as if to shake off your uneasiness before you finally make contact with the knob, pressing the passcode in.
Ghana wins you over when you finally open the door, slipping inside in an instant through the creak you made. You were welcomed by the awfully familiar woody scent of Changmin’s perfume, combined with Ghana's furry smell trapped along the furnitures inside the house.
It was just like it was. It was just like when you left.
You push the door like it was your lifeline, slowly and surely, trying to repress the heavy feeling bubbling inside your chest as your eyes finally roam around, and it still held the same valuable you held dearly in your heart. Ghana's belongings still in the same corner, sofa still on the same side, Changmin's clothes still laying around and…
Pictures.
Picture frames you couldn't even count are still displayed around the house. Film pictures still hanging very tightly on the strings you decorated the house with. Pictures of you and Changmin, of him and Ghana, of you and Ghana, and of you.
Ghana had long claimed his place as he hopped on his bed and tucked in as he watches you wuietly make your way around with mouth ajar, tears welling in your eyes as your fingers swiftly hover over the sound pictures.
You were so happy.
You were so perfect together.
How could all of this be gone in just a night?
You make your way around the pictures, following the string to which was once your shared room, opening it like it was still yours. And where it stopped, was the last time you had taken a photo with him, squishing your faces together to fit in the frame. A ghost of your smile remains in that room, and Changmin couldn't have possibly taken it off when you were all that he felt and remembered in the whole flat. Your head drops to stop yourself from going back– either to him or to just look back in your past, and your eyes catch a glimpse of the calendar you always in your bedside.
It was still dated 6 months ago, crossed out a day before you broke up.
And it stopped there. Time stopped there.
You grab ahold of the calendar before your burst into tears covering your mouth to stop the sobs but it was inevitable. You were already sitting on your heels, hopelessly and needlessly hugging the calendar to your chest as if it took your love away.
You remember the night clearly. Very clearly as if you could see it happening in front of you. How you were alone in the dark, how Changmin was nowhere to be seen. How your heart broke a thousand times more when you had to do it.
“y/n…” You hear Changmin whisper through the empty room, only filled with your sobs. You didn’t even hear the front door unlocking– nor him calling out for you the first few times, or maybe Ghana barking to welcome his other owner. You didn't even realize the state you were in until you heard his voice.
He looks at you with so much sorrow and love, wanting to hold you in his arms and never— never wanting seeing you like that ever again. But when he takes a step closer and you falter on your heels, he stops. He reminds himself that— that was the effect of him. He was the cause. And it breaks his heart impossibly a little more.
“y/n, I’m sorry…” It seemed like a great time to start the talk. And you knew you had to. But facing him with tears in your eyes you didn't know when will stop, cheeks damp that wouldn't dry any time soon, and lips quivering from all the sobs you were having, you were good to be out of the apartment as soon as you could.
So you stand up, shake your head at him and leave the bedroom in a mess, messily wiping your cheeks roughly with your sleeve. You don't look back. You can't. You shouldn't. But Changmin holds your wrist back to stop you from leaving– to stop himself from reliving the same mistake that happened six months ago. He can't bear it to happen again. It will be like dying twice.
“y/n… if you could please just tell me what I did wrong…” Changmin mumbles between his own battle of sobs, dropping his head down to stare lifelessly and hold tightening on your wrist as you stay on your place, not wanting to stare at him right through his eyes,
You scoff in disbelief. Even after all these months, you just can't seem to get over it. And Changmin still doesn't seem to understand. And even though he doesn't understand, he still manages to apologize for something he doesn't know.
“Changmin,” You call through gritted teeth, finally having the courage to face him. “It's not about what you did wrong. It's about what you did and didn't do,” You finally gave him the answer that's been bugging him every single night of these six months, but it wasn't satisfactory. He didn't understand. Says a lot on how his head shot up with his eyebrows furrowed, tears flowing out in his eyes as well.
“y/n, what… I don't understand. That morning of the first of June, we were okay. We were definitely okay. I know because we woke up together in the same bed, cooked each other breakfast and left with kisses. And suddenly by midnight of the second, you weren't replying to my texts or calls! When you got back by night, you were suddenly breaking up with me— right here where you're standing, with no explanation, your things packed. So tell me because I am on my knees, y/n… What the hell did I do…” Changmin explained each word with aggression and confusion, but his hold wasn't any near it. It still held you like you were the most fragile he could touch.
But it still wasn't enough. And so you've had enough.
“First of June, Changmin, you had your first organization party. That fucking org party you cannot for the life of you leave when your girlfriend desperately needed you. I texted you a bunch of times, called you a hundred times, and when you did finally answer my call, you shut me out. Saying you can't leave because it's your first party your org was having. Asking if I could just call my two best friends without even asking what the fuck happened. And let me tell you now what happened since you're so fucking eager to know!” You break his hold harshly, heaving a few heavy breaths before you're finally taken all the way from the first of June.
