Soon You’ll Get Better has had a special place in my heart since the first time I heard it. While I have been fortunate enough to not have a parent go through cancer, I’ve had several other family members, including an aunt I’m very close to, battle it. Some have come out victorious, some are still battling, and some have lost the battle. My family is the reason I chose to go into oncology, specifically radiation oncology. What solidified my choice was when I was job shadowing and saw a teenage girl be brought back to see the treatment room where her mom was receiving treatments. The staff there walked her through how they were treating her mom and what the different aspects of the room were. She started crying and saying that this was the first time she felt like her mom was going to beat cancer. That was the moment I knew I was right where I needed to be. To be able to help not only the patients, but their families as well.

When I heard Soon You’ll Get Better for the first time, I cried. And I cried hard. Because I’ve been the relative. Because I’ve seen it in my patients eyes. I’ve seen it in their families eyes. But now every time I listen to it, it’s a reminder of why I do my job. And even more so now. All of my patients are immunocompromised. They’re terrified. We’re terrified. But we show up every day to get them through this. We joke. And we play their favorite music and we dance in the treatment room. We still ring the bell to signal the end of their treatment. We still celebrate. Because even though this is an absolutely terrifying time, we have to keep moving forward. We say: Cancer doesn’t care about COVID. Because it doesn’t.

Knowing how much this song meant to Taylor, and how emotional it was for her to write and record, the fact that she sang it live was beautiful. She didn’t have to. But she knew how much the song would help others right now. She truly puts her fans and the community above herself. I have never been so proud to be a fan of hers and why I will always be a fan. Thank you Taylor.
