some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.

Remembered the phrase "[someone] is turning in his grave", as a way of saying that someone who's now dead would so deeply disapprove of something that a living person is doing that their corpse would stir in unease.

Then I remembered an expression, "even a worm will turn", as a way of saying that no matter how downtrodden or lowly someone seems, they can nonetheless turn against their abusers and oppressors once they've had enough of it.

Then cross-contamination happened and the phrase "a worm is turning in his grave" emerged to me. I have no idea what that means.

I did a thing

Wrote some shit for a DND campaign, I think I cooked a little too hard with this one.

Memory: You are back home, in your room. Your friend, who you’ve known since you were kids, runs into your room. “I heard the good news!” (Improvise a bit, then cut to the middle of the night) It is now the middle of the night, you pack a bag, only the necessities, and sneak out the back door. It’s pouring rain, and as you run down the path, hoping not to be seen, you lose your footing, you slip and fall. And fall for a little too long. Then you hit the hard ground, but, it isn’t grass. Vision: You are standing on the deck of a ship, in the midst of a raging hurricane. The ship rocks violently, but doesn’t seem to be able to capsize. You manage to keep your footing. As you look around you, you see no sign of any land, or other ships, or anything at all. In fact, looking at your own ship, it doesn’t even have sails. And as you look around, you see something in the middle of the hurricane. Something massive, tall, extending into the clouds. A humanoid figure, larger than anything you have ever seen. You’ve heard stories of storm giants. Large people who can command thunder itself. But in the stories you have heard, they’re about 20-30 feet tall. This being is the size of a mountain. As you look on, you see that the giant turns, you see its face, massive, bearded, with eyes that glow like lightning. And you see that as this behemoth turns, it turns to look directly at you. You stand there, unable to move, as it opens its mouth to speak, and thunder comes out. You feel this thunder as it shakes the world. The giant regards you, and in its face, you can’t be sure, but you think you see a hint of recognition. It sees you, and it seems to know you somehow. The giant begins to dissolve in your sight, as everything else fades out. And then, nothing.

I have a couple more of these following the same format. Playing on Sunday, we'll see how it goes
