known for Life-sized, often disarticulated female dolls (called Die Puppe / La Poupée), erotic photography, drawings, etchings, and prints.

His work frequently explored themes of sexuality, fetishism, the uncanny, and the fragmented female body.

Bellmer created his first doll in the early 1930s as an act of rebellion against his authoritarian father and the rising Nazi regime (which labeled his work "degenerate").

The dolls were constructed from wood, papier-mâché, ball joints, and other materials, with interchangeable and exaggerated body parts.

He photographed them in provocative, often disturbing poses in domestic settings. His art draws from influences like E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Sandman (with its mechanical doll) and Surrealist ideas of the subconscious and desire.

Later in life in Paris, he produced many graphic, explicit drawings and illustrations (e.g., for Histoire de l’œil by georges bataille )
