Nikki gave a small nod before smiling lightly, “Of course, I don’t mind the drive at all. Gives me space and fresh air to relax a bit and you get some food out of it. Win-win if you ask me.” She let her fingers drum softly on her thigh as if she were at home playing her piano, humming quietly along with the song she was mock playing. “See some people tell me to be hands on and others tell me to give her space and let her come to me. It’s just so confusing.” She sighed lightly before smiling and nodding. “She does like nature and climbing trees and stuff. And I love to ride horses, she might like to learn as well and it might give us something in common.”

“Well, I appreciate it, still.” Hallie grinned, digging into the bag for a snack and biting into it, her stomach growling as she did. She was sure she hadn’t eaten in a month- or maybe she just needed food a lot. “Personally, I can’t stand driving. I hate having to drive all the way out here, but I would kill myself before I lived on-site.” Hallie shrugged softly, remembering being quite independent as a kid, and only really listening to Dean. She ran wild, but never really broke any rules, “Honestly, maybe you shouldn’t listen to. I’ve never had kids, and probably never will, and I’m- well, I mean, I’ve never had younger siblings. Just people I took care of,” she laughed, thinking of Eli.”Well, then, definitely bring her over one day! Whenever, just let me know you’re coming!”

Leila blinked and gave a slow nod before smiling faintly. “Just a project for my Artificial Intelligence class, I’ve been doing these calculations for what seem like hours and can’t quite get it right.” She tilted her head and grinned. “Well if you know anything about A.I.s help would be awesome but if not that’s okay too. Maybe a small break will help my brain focus more.”

Hallie blinked, having not expected that answer. She knew next to nothing about that kind of thing. She had to take some above-basic tech classes for her music production classes, but they were all for programs like Sonar and other producing programs. “I don’t know a damn thing, but if you ever need it to program music, I may be able to help.”

Eli nodded his head. “Oh! Yeah! Yeah. Matt lives here, actually. So…small world? He’s been doing his thing here for a while now. And I thought I’d come give him some company, you know?” It was the least he could do. After not getting to grow up with him, Eli would take all the time together he could now. “Oh, tell me about it! We got so busy here and there I would have killed to be able to call you or something. I missed that voice,” he smiled at Hallie warmly. There was something so inviting about her. He’d always admired it and had always been drawn to it. “Oh yeah, Matt’s treating me well, trust me. He’s a health nut and always whacking me over the head with celery. You don’t gotta worry about me.” Eli laughed along with her. He blushed at her saying she could never leave him. He never wanted her, too. She was too much of a staple in his life. “Aw well..you know I can’t be without you.” He winked gently. “Actually, no I didn’t get a wild hair. Matt took in some punk and was feeling lonely so I offered to come give him a hand. He’s busy today though so…so long as you say you don’t get in trouble we should have the day together?” Eli nudged her with a smirk and reached up to try and tuck a free hair behind her ear. 

Hallie’s brows raised in surprised, “oh, oh wow, I didn’t know that!” She hummed, looking relatively surprised at the chances of that. “It’s really sweet of you, but I shouldn’t be surprised. You’re always super sweet to everyone.” She smiled, patting his cheek gently. Hallie grinned, “Oh, have you?” She chuckled, “I honestly miss being home. I couldn’t wait to make a beeline back to Montana as quickly as possible, but now that you’re here it’s going to make that difficult.” Because why would she want to go back to Montana, when Eli was here? She’d always had such a racing heart for him, but she was sure he never noticed. “Okay, well good. I’m glad. SOmeone needs to keep you in line.” She grinned, teasing him gently. He could tell her as many times as he wanted not to worry, but she would always worry anyways. I can’t be without you either. But immediately he seemed to be on to the next subject, and all she wanted to do was reach out. “I promise I won’t get in trouble. But, you will if you don’t hang out with me, do you hear me?”

“Come on, come on, come ooooon.” Leila groaned as she stared at her computer screen intently. She was working on a project for one of her Technology classes and was really hoping she’d done her calculations right. She blinked when a shadow fell across her and looked up. “Sorry, am I in your way?” She glanced between them and her laptop, waiting to see if her calculations.

Hallie rose a brow at the red head as she seemed particularly angry with her computer. “Uh, no, no. Just- got distracted,” Hallie chuckled, running her hand over her hair, “You seemed super frustrated and I was trying to figure out if I could help, is all. Is everything okay?” She felt a little awkward now, having been found out for staring.

He hugged Hallie snuggly and nuzzled her hair. “Ahhh! It was so sudden! Matt wanted some company and I thought why the hell not?! I wasn’t expecting to see you though!! God, I’ve missed you Hal!” He smiled happily at her. Eli was always so eager around Hallie. She had such a good energy about her. He was so glad he could call someone like her his best friend. At her eating well comment, Eli scoffed. “Hey now, come on! Matt feeds me just fine! But he’s out working today so I had to grab something considering I just can’t let myself starve! You know how that goes!” Eli shook his head and waved a hand at the burger. Besides, veggies usually had the tendency to kill him. Or so he liked to think. “Don’t let the winery kill you though, I might need you to help me stay alive since I have to fend for myself sometimes! Are you sure you can just take the day though? I don’t want you to get in trouble or anything…” he hesitated, reaching out to tuck some hair behind her ear.

Hallie smiled brightly at him, holding him close as he nuzzled her. There was such a relief to being close to him again. “Matt’s here?” she asked, surprised. She had only met him a few times, but Matt was definitely fun to be around. “I missed you, too, Eli. So much. It’s been pretty bland without my best friend.” She grinned, cupping his face gently with her hand. “As long as he’s feeling you well... and he better be, because I need you well taken care of. I was worried you were going to make yourself sick after I was gone.” she chuckled. “But, I know, it’s nearly impossible to make you eat vegetables. Hopefully Matt’s having an easier time than I did!” she giggled, teasing him as she poked his nose. “I could never leave you lonely like that, silly. I may end up being half dead, but I’d never die completely cause, I mean, you know- I can’t leave you.” She chuckled. “I run it. I can’t get in trouble,” shrugging her shoulder, she leaned into his hand as he tucked hair behind her ear, “so, I mean, did you just get a wild hair up your ass to come out here?”

“So then I asked her what she’d like in her lunch today and she just stared at me as if I had slipped into French. I know I shouldn’t push and the fact that she does answer and smiles at us sometimes is an improvement but sometimes…” Nikki trailed off before letting out a sigh. “Sometimes it’s like Kat doesn’t want us as a family, and it’s been two years. I’m starting to wonder if Nate and I will ever get through to her.” She ran a hand through her dark hair and gave a sheepish smile. “I’m sorry, I was just supposed to be dropping off some food for you and instead I went on a rant about Kat’s insecurities.” She rolled her eyes at herself and shook her head lightly.

Hallie shrugged, “no you’re good, feel free to keep talking.” Hallie offered, picking at the carrots in the brown paper bag. “I appreciate the lunch though, really. I really didn’t expect someone to come all the way out here to bring me lunch. Freaking hour drive. I still don’t know why my father thought the middle of absolutely fucking no where would be a great idea for the new Winery location, but,” she shrugged once more, crunching into a carrot again. “Buuut, enough of that- your kid. Right. Bring her out here somethings. The great wide open can be good for kids. I can teach her to ride, and put her to work. She can explore. A little freedom to help her find herself, ya know? It’s how pop raised me. Mom was a little more hands on.”

Taking a sip of water, Eli sighed. He wasn’t sure what all he had to do today and for some reason his brain just wasn’t working. What could he do? Matt’s yard needed mowed. Then again, his brother would be pissed if he chose to do his work for him. Eli liked to help out, though. So why not? Then maybe he could go to the grocery store for him. Or at the very least, fix the spare bathroom’s toilet. When a voice brought him out of his thoughts, he nearly lost his breath. “H-Hallie?!” he exclaimed, standing up immediately before remembering he was way taller than her. He went and grabbed her into a hug. “Oh my god it’s miss Hallie! Hey there, doll!” Eli squeezed her lightly and relished the feeling of her in his arms.  

Hallie giggled as her best friend scooped her up into a hug. She breathed in his scent it smelling entirely of home. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming? When did you get here?” the words fell out of her mouth as she pulled herself away to look at his face, before strangling him in a hug again. “You should’ve let me know, ya jerk.” She shook her head, chuckling lightly. “Are you eating well-” she glanced down at the plate, “no, no you’re not. You’re eating grease. Eli, you need to talk better care of yourself! Come over for dinner sometime- oh, oh oh, you should also come check out the winery sometime. Dad’s coming in soon to see how the progress is coming. I’m essentially wanting to kill myself with it, really. Oh- OH, I was supposed to go in- hold on, I’m totally calling them and telling them something came up, okay? Okay, hold on.” She rambled before stopping and pulling her phone out to text the lead associate. “Okay! Let’s hang out!”

Eli wiped his hands before reaching for his glass of water. He was incredibly hungry and unfortunately for him, Matt was working so he couldn’t bum food off of him. He had started doing some work for Jared and it made Eli happy. Matt needed to stay busy these days, anyway. Though, if Eli kept up the diet he was at, he’d need to be busy working out. A cheeseburger and fries every day wasn’t always the best diet. He snatched a few more fries and sighed, gazing out the window into his own world and shaking his head. He needed to go camping soon. 

Hallie wasn’t entirely sure when the last time she’d gotten to eat anything, let alone something healthy. She was sure she’d gained at least ten pounds since coming here to open her dad’s east coast branch of Winterberry Winery. She was exhausted, sick of people, and especially sick of wearing such formal clothes. Today, she’d thought she’d get a chance to just stay in her apartment, but nope. They needed her to come back out to the winery. So, fast food it was again. And then she saw a familiar face, and her heart skipped a beat. What was Eli doing here? She quirked a brow, and approached his table, wondering if he’d noticed her yet- or if he ever would all professional-like.
