Matt took a deep breath as he leaned back in his chair at the coffee shop. He had a day off and decided to grab a book and get some coffee. These days weren’t hard to come by but with Lu suddenly in his life he did often stay more occupied than he had been recently. It wasn’t a problem and he loved helping the teenager. However, he had gotten used to down time. He wanted to utilize it more often. A balance between work and relaxing was needed for his well being, he realized. And when his thoughts got too jumbled, he decided to get busy again. It worked out for him. Scrubbing a hand over his face, Matt closed the book to take a sip of coffee, but the book slipped and fell onto the ground. “Well, there goes that,” he shook his head. What page had he been on? 

“Careful, Matt, that’s how you ruin books.” Nikki teased as she and Kat came across the man. Kat hummed softly and bent down to pick up the book, looking at it carefully before holding it out to the man. “Looks boring.” The nine year old said softly and Nikki pinched the bridge of her nose, she wanted to scold the girl but didn’t want to cross some invisible line of Kat’s. Finally she just went for it, “That was rude, Katarina.” Her tone was stern but still caring. “Well it does.” The girl replied, and Nikki was startled by the petulant tone in her voice, she sounded like a normal kid. Nikki couldn’t help but chuckle, “Never judge a book by it’s cover. Some of the most boring looking books can be the most interesting.” She said lightly and was pleased to see Kat looking thoughtful.

“Well I’m always willing to help you out, of course. You’re dear to me and you’re doing a great thing with Kat. Besides, I love to help, as we know.” He laughed lightly, squeezing her hand once more before pulling back. He shook his head. “Oh, right. Um…Eli. My brother. Half brother, actually. I just now started really getting close to him so…that’s been nice. I’ve liked having him around. We’re similar but also different in a lot of ways.” Matt shrugged. “Oh yeah. They’re definitely a handful. Thank goodness Lu is 18 but still…he’s got a lot of growing up to do, even with being too mature, as well.” He laughed along with her and nodded in agreement. “Well I feel as though I’ve been too lonely recently so the company has been nice!” 

Nikki grinned brightly and nodded her agreement, Matt had become one of her dearest friends since moving here and she loved having him in her life. When he pulled away she shoved her hair out of her face and snuck some of the food she’d brought him. “Brother? That’s cool! Siblings are great to have even when they drive you fuckin’ crazy.” She thought of her twin and her older brother and shook her head lightly. “You’ll have to introduce me sometime.” She hummed softly and nodded. “Kat’s the same way. In some ways she seems much older than nine but she still has so much growing and learning to do.” She frowned faintly for a moment before smiling at him gently, it was a motherly serene smile that she was well known for in her group of friends. “If you ever need company you know you’re more than welcome to come and visit us right?”

As if on cue to a woman’s voice, Lu’s lips curled back. “Don’t fucking tell me that as if you’re my mother.” Lu looked over at the two girls and rolled their eyes. They crossed their arms in a silent fit and watched as the little one walked over to the machine. A black bat. “Oh what the fuck?!” they exclaimed, stamping a foot into the ground. Of course this little shit happened to have the best luck on the planet. Ugh. How infuriating? When she offered them to ring, Lu almost wanted to tell them to shove it up their ass. They wanted the bat fairly. Not by trade. However…the bat ring was still a bat ring, regardless of where it came from. “Yeah, sure whatever. Have your pick. So long as I get the bat.” They snapped. 

Nikki raised a cool eyebrow, not at all phased by the attitude or the words, she just rocked back on her heels as she watched the interaction. “Lucky cat at games.” Kat said with a faint smirk, pointing at herself as she continued to hold out the gumball. If the brunette in front of her didn’t hurry up and take it she’d keep the stupid thing. The little blonde tilted her head at their words and snorted faintly. “All and you get it.” She wanted all the damn rings for this one. Nikki shook her head lightly, it really wasn’t that fair of a trade but the brunette teenager seemed more interested in the ring Kat had gotten than any of the others.

Hallie shrugged, “no you’re good, feel free to keep talking.” Hallie offered, picking at the carrots in the brown paper bag. “I appreciate the lunch though, really. I really didn’t expect someone to come all the way out here to bring me lunch. Freaking hour drive. I still don’t know why my father thought the middle of absolutely fucking no where would be a great idea for the new Winery location, but,” she shrugged once more, crunching into a carrot again. “Buuut, enough of that- your kid. Right. Bring her out here somethings. The great wide open can be good for kids. I can teach her to ride, and put her to work. She can explore. A little freedom to help her find herself, ya know? It’s how pop raised me. Mom was a little more hands on.”

Nikki gave a small nod before smiling lightly, “Of course, I don’t mind the drive at all. Gives me space and fresh air to relax a bit and you get some food out of it. Win-win if you ask me.” She let her fingers drum softly on her thigh as if she were at home playing her piano, humming quietly along with the song she was mock playing. “See some people tell me to be hands on and others tell me to give her space and let her come to me. It’s just so confusing.” She sighed lightly before smiling and nodding. “She does like nature and climbing trees and stuff. And I love to ride horses, she might like to learn as well and it might give us something in common.”

Noelle grinned as she topped her sundae off with everything sweet she could get her hands on- hot fudge, hot caramel, nuts, sprinkles, chopped up candies of various types- m&ms, snickers, reeces, all of it. “I know, I know. I’m a master at sundae-making. Want me to make yours, too?” she asked, when she felt like someone was looking at her. It was her break time, and she’d headed over to the ice cream shop down the street from the toy shop. 

Nikki watched as Kat watched the red head make the extravagant sundae, the tiny blonde’s eyes were wide and Nikki just knew that she wanted one as well. When the redhead spoke up, Nikki was surprised to see Kat look at her as if asking for permission. Nikki knew that she and Nate rarely had junkfood in their house, though she knew Nate snuck some when he was out and probably gave Kat some too, so she knew it’d be a treat for Kat to have some. “Well, I don’t mind if you have one, Kit-Kat. But I think I’ll pass.” She chuckled lightly as Kat’s eyes lit up and she spun to face the red head. “Can you teach me how to make one like that?” Kat asked.

“Maybe she needs some more stability… maybe make her lunch with whatever you know she likes, and don’t give her the option. It’ll remind her you know what she likes, and you listen to her.” Noelle leaned towards Nikki, eyes bright as she tried to help. “I could try to be friends with her, if you want!” Noelle asked, almost bouncing in her seat. “Oh, no worries, really. I don’t mind talking! I’ll make sure Miss Karina gets the lunch! I’ve been visiting her lately when I come to visit the children who are sick. She’s so nice, you know? And so strong, too. I don’t know how she does it. She’s not doing great, but she’s still being so strong! Sorry, I’m rambling again, aren’t I?”

Nikki’s eyebrows furrowed and she rubbed her forehead lightly. “Being a parent is a lot more confusing than I thought it’d be. Some people tell me to make the decisions for her so she’ll learn boundaries and knows I care. Others tell me to give her options so that she still has some of the freedom to choose that she’s used to having and it shows that I want her to make choices for herself and I just don’t know what to do anymore.” She put her face in her hands to try and catch her breath and swallowed back her tears. Things had been going so well and then, for what seemed like no reason, things had backslid and Nikki and Nate had no idea what to do and it broke their hearts. She looked up to smile lightly at the red head. “Thank you. I’ve been worried about Aunt Karina, I wish I could visit but it’s almost time for Kat to get out of school. Will you pass on my love to Aunt Karina?” She chuckled lightly. “Don’t worry about rambling to me, I do it some times too.”

He laughed and nodded. “Oh yeah. Eight out of ten is definitely delicious! Just ask for some more ketchup and you’ll be golden!” He smiled at the little one. Kids were always so interesting. Eli knew he wanted to have kids one day but sometimes he often wondered if that was…a far off dream; something unattainable. When Nikki recognized him he smiled more. They had only met briefly. Matt had only spoke of Nikki quite often. She was busy, according to him, but he’d heard enough to recognize her. “You’re nearly there! Good job. That’s a big accomplishment.” He shrugged. “Oh you know, they’ve been pretty good. Just here keeping Matty company. He’s a sucker for a full house, you know how that goes.” 

Kat hummed softly around her straw as she sucked down the milkshake, either not getting a brain freeze or ignoring it completely, and Nikki knew they’d have to order another one before the food got here. “If it doesn’t kill me first.” Nikki joked, sliding her soda across the table for Kat to suck down, she’d order herself a tea when she ordered Kat’s second milkshake. Even though it’d been two years since Kat had been adopted by them, it still surprised Nikki how much the tiny blonde could eat. “Having a full house can be a blast some times, though alone time is good too. I hope you guys are enjoying yourselves.”

Kayt grinned impishly at her ‘scalding’ from Nikki. “Kat knows they’re grown-up words.” She patted the small girl on the head as she sat down. “Well, you know the shop is always open to y’all. How’s school, Ka- well, both of you, hah. How;s school going for both of you?”

“Bad wooords.” The little blonde half sang with a smug look at Kayt, causing Nikki to snort, today must be a good day despite the little blonde not speaking much. “And our place is always open to you if you ever want to come over.” Nikki laughed lightly. “I can almost see the end of Medical School.” She sighed lightly as she leaned across the front counter. “S’a cute boy who sits next to me. He’s smart.” Kat said softly, Nikki and Nate had both already heard about Aaron on the days that Kat was in a good mood and excited to talk about school.

Kayt couldn’t even begin to explain how happy she was that Nikki wasn’t mad at her anymore. She couldn’t stand when people she loved were mad at her. “You will be helping her- just not as hands-on. She isn’t like me- and hands-on didn’t even work on me very well. You’ve got to remember that patience is going to be key for her, i think.” A warm smile came over her lips, “it wasn’t awful, Niks. It definitely wasn’t awful. I missed you guys, though. So, that was difficult… I’m glad to be back, too, though.. As hard as it was to come back. I’m hoping it was the right decision, honestly.”

Nikki gave a slow nod before giving Kayt a flat look, “I hope you know how confusing all the advice I’ve been getting is. Some say be hands on and show her how I care. Others say don’t be hands on and let her come to me. It’s confusing and you know how I feel about confusing things.” She snorted lightly, she loathed being confused. A small smile came to her face when Kayt smiled and she nodded. “Well, I’m glad it wasn’t awful and we all missed you too.” She tilted her head lightly before nodding. “If it wasn’t then I’ll be sure to have a back up plan for you ... if you want.”

Eli continued to keep to himself. So often he was doing that recently. He would’ve hoped Matt could get home early so that he could spend time with him. That would be a nice treat. After getting so close to him, the company was much needed. He licked his lips as he stared down at his plate. He still had some of his burger left and fries. He was about to take another bite when he heard a voice. Looking over, Eli raised an eyebrow at the little one speaking. “Oh? You’re asking me?” he hummed, “well…I give it a solid 8 out of 10. Though I would have preferred more ketchup. But over all a pretty solid burger?” he smiled. Then he glanced at who the little girl was with. “Oh! Hey Nikki! How is it going?” 

Kat hummed in thought and glanced at their table, a frown coming to her face when she didn’t see a bottle of ketchup on the table. “I’ll have to ask for some.” She grumbled under her brother before nodding at him. “Eight out of ten is good enough for me.” She turned back around and settled in her seat, nodding her thanks when the waitress set her milkshake down in front of her. Nikki smiled lightly, now recognizing Matt’s brother Eli. “Hey! It’s going, I can almost see the end of Medical School.” She laughed lightly. “How are things with you?”

Matt nodded in understanding. “Yeah…it’s difficult to know she’s been through that kind of…really, trauma, at such a young age. But she’s in really good hands. I trust that,” Matt murmured to Nikki with a smile, reaching over and resting a hand on top of hers. “Exactly! Let me know how that method goes with her? I’m sure we can brainstorm more ideas, too. And I always try to be a good listener. Everyone needs to vent every now and then, right?” He cleared his throat, shrugging a little. How had he been? “Well..you know. I was lonely for a bit until Eli came to visit. Then I’ve got Lu on my hands,” Matt shook his head, “they’re a handful, let me tell you. My God, Nikki…” He scrubbed his hands over his face. “I guess I should be thankful for the company but I never expected it to come at such a…large presence.” 

Nikki felt her face flush a bit as she smiled and nodded, she and Nate hoped that they were doing well with Kat but some times they were so unsure. It was nice to know that others thought they were doing well. She patted his hands with her free one and nodded. “I will definitely keep you in the loop, Matt. Having someone to brainstorm with other than Nate is awesome, to be honest.” She grinned and nodded. “Eli? Old friend?” She wasn’t sure she’d heard him speak of an Eli before. “Kids are a handful, man.” She laughed lightly. “Company is nice but some times, having peace and quiet is as well.”

“–oh, fuck me running,” Kayt cursed as she lazily flipped through a manual to a new model of car, trying to keep her mind occupied. It wasn’t working. All she could think about was how was she going to keep from confrontation she didn’t feel like having. From off in the parking lot, she heard a car pull in. A small groan left her lips. “We’re not open yet!” she called out, deciding that she was going to wait for Jared to get in to do anything. “May as well leave!”

“Such language.” Nikki teased lightly as she and Kat entered the garage. “Kayt.” Was all Kat said before she moved to sit near the older blonde. Nikki felt a smile come to her lips when she saw the lightness enter Kat’s features. “We were feeling a little antsy at home so we decided to visit.” Nikki said lightly as she set down her bag ful of medical texts and yawned lightly.

Lu gave a dramatic huff in exhale as they narrowed their eyes at the prize machine. All the options for rings and the only one they had their eyes on was a black bat ring. 50 cents. You better give me what I want, they demanded silently as they slipped in their change. The remnants of the last two dollars they spent was scattered along the floor around their feet in anger. Turning the knob, the ball popped out and Lu scooped it up with a glimmer of hope. A neon green skull. “Ugh!! You piece of shit!!” they growled, using the boot on their right foot to kick the entire prize stand. “Fuck you!” 

“Language.” Nikki said mildly as she handed Kat the candy bar the girl had been eyeing. Kat hummed happily as she unwrapped it and took a large bite out of it. Then the blonde stepped between the brunette and the prize machine and put in two quarters, humming again when a black bat ring popped out. She held it out to the older girl before she pointed at the ones on the floor, offering a silent trade as she took another bite of her candy bar. Nikki watched silently, it may not seem like much but to her, seeing Kat interact with someone not in her immediate circle of known people was a step in the right direction. “I think she’s offering you a trade, that ring for the ones on the floor. A little one sided but .. yeah.”

Eli wiped his hands before reaching for his glass of water. He was incredibly hungry and unfortunately for him, Matt was working so he couldn’t bum food off of him. He had started doing some work for Jared and it made Eli happy. Matt needed to stay busy these days, anyway. Though, if Eli kept up the diet he was at, he’d need to be busy working out. A cheeseburger and fries every day wasn’t always the best diet. He snatched a few more fries and sighed, gazing out the window into his own world and shaking his head. He needed to go camping soon. 

Nikki smiled lightly as she led Kat into the diner, she was trying to keep what everyone had told her in mind. She had to let the little girl make her own choice despite her young age, had to wait for Kat to come to her, just give the girl some time and patience. “Pick whatever you like, Kat. As much of whatever you want. We can sit wherever.” The nine year old nodded and wandered around the diner before picking a booth next to a man sitting alone. “What would you like, ma petite?” Nikki asked as she sat down, Kat shrugged and began to look at the menu. When the waitress came Nikki ordered a grilled chicken salad and a sweet tea while Kat ordered half the menu. Then the little girl turned to look at the man and Nikki bit her lip to keep from gently scolding the girl about staring being rude. And then, for the first time in a while the little girl spoke. “Is the burger good or did I just waste everyone’s time?” She asked her voice rough from disuse. Nikki glanced at the man, hoping he didn’t mind the interruption.

Kayt shrugged lightly, “I mean- let her be. She’ll figure it out. When you keep trying, she wants to step away. Let her come to you, Niks. She’s getting there.” It was relieving to be back around her family- though it was still new. Being back in the States felt weird after having been gone for nearly a year. She’d been able to text and vidchat Kat, but it wasn’t the same, and she definitely felt like the girl regressed. “You’ll just have to prove it to her with time. She’s not used to people yet.” Kayt shrugged one shoulder as she pulled a sandwich out of the paper bag,, “She’ll get there- and don’t worry about it. I’m still trying to get used to being back here. Overseas was so … different.Bit of a culture shock coming back.” It hit her what she was talking about and she sighed, worried it was going to bring back the anger most of her friends and family had at her when she left- but they didn’t understand.

Nikki sighed and pouted a bit before slowly nodding. She’d been angry at both Kayt and Nate at first, when the blonde had left with no warning and when she’d come back with no warning. But now she was just relieved that she had her best friend back and figured it was better to just try and move on. She had her best friend back, Nate had his sister back, and Kat had her Aunt and confidant back. “I know you’re right. It’s just ... it’s so hard because I just want to help her so much.” She felt tears pricking her eyes and rubbed them quickly. “You’d think I’d have more patience all things considered.” She gave another sigh and tugged on her hair. “I will ... try to step back and let her come to me and make her own choices and stuff.” She gave Kayt a faint smile and nodded lightly. “Yeah, things can be very different over there.” She reached out to touch Kayt’s shoulder. “I hope you still managed to have fun over there, despite it all. And I’m glad you’re back, Chaos.”
