In high school one of the common fund raisers was carnation flowers for a dollar during prom season and valentines and a couple other times of year. And you could “order” flowers to be delivered to kids during their homeroom times so it was always a big deal to get flowers and it was super fun

But one of these fundraisers I had a guy friend who commented he never got any because he was always single or his girlfriend always expected flowers but never gave him any

So my senior year valentines I decided I was going to buy all the guys in my homeroom (which he was in) a carnation and said they were from “Anonymous Girl in your homeroom”

So the day came and all the guys started getting flowers and they all realized they were from the same one girl and all got super excited and giddy and protective of their flowers and all day long I saw the guys in my homeroom wear flowers behind their ears or stuffed in their notebooks and they flaunted them around to other guys that didn’t get flowers. One guy tried to see if it would make his girlfriend jealous. A couple of them tried to play detective to figure it out who it was.

Then the next day apparently they all (or at least most of them) got together and bought all the girls in homeroom a carnation as a thank you to whoever it was so every girl in my homeroom got a bouquet of one from every guy (so it was a bouquet of about a dozen) and every single girl was smiling and happy and bouncy as the guys were the day before

And no one ever knew it was me but I was always super proud of that

That was a lot, you know?

Despite his love for the band, the 1D years really did a number on him. Watching the change from bright, rambunctious extrovert to something more considered was wrenching. Yes, some of it was simply growing up but that recurring theme of being undermined, doubted and pushed to the side raised its ugly head too often not to be noticed.

The cinematography was good, the sound was immaculate and Charlie was gifted with one hell of a narrative arc. It would be an impossible task to capture the spirit of Louies and the feel of his concerts on film: Charlie probably came as close as anyone could. It would make for an awesome VR experience if you were one of those that liked such things.

Charlie is a talented documentarian, clearly supportive but not invasive. Tenacious and unafraid to go after tough matter yet not indulge in it, making the choices to deliver a coherent vision both creatively and narratively.

There is another, darker, more complex storyline here, peeping around the edges. I hope we get to see it one day. Even if it is ten hours long.

I would happily sit through ten times ten hours about Louis Tomlinson’s life, listening to him talk.

Two hours was clearly not enough time to cover his last twelve years. What was not covered is as interesting a choice as what was. The choice to focus on the development of his performance career was a good one. It is most likely where he currently can be the most honest and if he can’t cover it honestly, better to leave it out. The choice left some strange gaps in the story but what he did include was certainly addressed with disarming intimacy, rawness and courage.

1D was beloved. I can’t recall a more beloved band, or one more mourned, since the Beatles. That was definitely underestimated by the so called adults of the music industry, intent on following a chartered path according to industry wisdom. They forgot industry wisdom is a work in progress.

I hope the next beloved band gets more support in the mental health department.

I admire him more than ever for his tenacity, his eloquent thoughtfulness and his flexibility (that pivot to songwriting! Brilliant! He is a force. Imagine if he had been given the support). All good traits to have in his line of work. Of course, his charisma and talent are shining more brightly the more confidence in them he develops. I think the need to worry about his career should lessen after this documentary. Whether or not you agree with his choices, he and the people around him are developing the ability to shape it to match where he wants to go. They are not there yet, there is a way to go and I think they would agree on that but at least he has a vision now of where he wants to be and what he wants his career to look like.

And I really hope we get to see the rest of Louis Tomlinson’s story one day.

Whether you are a Larrie or not, or believe Louis is straight or gay or bi, you have to admit, it's odd that in the entire documentary, 107 minutes of Louis' personal story, there is not a single reference to his dating anyone, ever. And I am so used to caginess around his love life that it took me five hours to even notice.

It's the story of Louis' relationships, his triumphs, his tragedies, his growth - and the man was publicly in a LTR 90% of the time - and no mention at all of dating.

3 of his siblings, his grandparents at length, Niall and Liam, Oli, Nizam, his current band, his manager, his security, purple hair girl, fans, his (non-)son...but no romantic relationship discussed, even in passing.

This is the man who says he's "actually quite romantic." Whose lyrics are about finding and losing and fighting for love. Who has repeatedly described his music as "lyrically honest." Whose favorite story is about cooking for his date.

Even with the BUA, with a story centered on how he survived his mum's and sister's deaths, and other loss - it would have made sense to mention a supposed GF who he was said to have reconnected with because of his mum's death. But...nothing.

Unless you count where he gave as an example of the closeness of his relationship with his mum by saying he'd called her when he lost his virginity (gender unspecified).

JD the security guard had more of a presence in this film than Louis' romantic life.

And what I get from this, is the story he wants to tell is no longer about being a guy who has had girlfriends. It wasn't the unvarnished truth, but I appreciate he didn't pull that out to try to varnish it.

“I think it’s his mum. I never got to meet her, but I felt a heavy responsibility in telling the story because obviously it’s someone’s life and it’s a sensitive scenario. At the same time, it could be something that could be milked or done in a certain way. It needed to be told, but I didn’t think it needed to be lingered on. There’s a line that [Louis’] grandma says: “We pride ourselves on being decent people”. And you can see that in Louis, he’s ahead of his years, which is what his mum gave him.”
