it was amazing , the difference between what the heart wanted and needed. these were words he’d needed to hear for a long time - for closure , for peace of mind , for some snide , childish part of him that needed the last word in this long game. but what he wanted now , more than anything , was for her to stop talking. the longer she spoke , the less he believed her - she knew how to wrap alistair around her little finger , manipulate him into feeling what she wanted him to feel , and she’d never thought against doing so before ; she’d broken him down and built him up for less , for whatever small personal gain she thought she needed. the longer she spoke , the more afraid he felt. 

what a strange world they lived in , when a genuine apology felt worse than a knife in the back. 

the tremor to his hand never ceased , though he’d since set his glass down on the windowsill to make it less noticable. shouldn’t he be stronger than this ? this was his home , his turf , his people surrounding him , his side winning. for once in his life , he was better than her. a pang of disgust washed over him - not for her , but for himself ; he must be all she said he was to still fear her , even now. 

“ unfortunately , my dear sister , there is a time limit on these things. “ his voice is a husk of a whisper , barely enough to be audible. “ i’ve worked hard to fix what you broke , and i can’t let you in to ruin that. nor can i guarentee anyone else will. you’ve done more harm than good , and for that i take partial responsibility , but ... “ 

alistair sighed , running a hand underneath his glasses to rub at his eyes. he’s so tired. “ ... as long as you intend on trying to do better , i’ll stand beside you. i alway have , haven’t i ? “

“ you should be recieving one in the mail shortly - my apologies , if i’d known we’d be meeting in person so soon , i would’ve gladly delivered it myself. “ or maybe he wouldn’t have. all this wedding talk made him nervous in ways he didn’t quite understand himself , and he wasn’t sure he could trust himself to pass along the message without letting it show. perhaps it was better to express some reluctance - at least it meant he cared - but apprehension in the face of anything was never a hammerlock’s style. 

for now , alistair was more than at peace , keeping a casual , curious eye on the bird. she was a nice distraction at least , in case anxiety did choose to rear its ugly head. “ xylourgos , “ he replies easily. “ i can’t say we’re planning anything that would warrant secrecy. just a simple ceremony - though , if it were only up to me,  i would’ve chosen something a bit more ... interactive.”

THE WAY HE shies away from her is painfully reflective of their sordid past. almost as soon as she’s seated herself , alistair stands , pacing the good foot or so to face the window instead , brandy in hand. he had to break out the stronger stuff for his sister’s visit , not for her comfort , but for his own sanity ; anything to dampen down the flutter of anxiety in his chest , old emotions making him feel that much smaller. he’s confident she wouldn’t lay a hand on him now , not after that ... rather stern talking-to he gave her , or the bullet she planted in them in kind , but there was always a thought. there was always a thought. 

alistair sipped from his glass , the ice cube rattling quietly by the tremble to his palm. now , whether that was from anxiety , or his blood sugar revolting against a loss of blood and gain of booze and little else , or his old age sneaking up on him in unexpected ways , he didn’t know. he only knew the tremor grew the longer she spoke , head bowed to his chest in thought. he’d dreamed of forcing these words from her lips at one point , and here she was , giving them to him freely - it was a sensation too bittersweet to quantify , and instead of comfort him , it frightened him. she’d never spoken this plainly before - it was always double meanings , flowery language and vocal contracts he never quite signed. while he’d never stopped believing in her change of heart , to see the day come in both their lifetimes , it ... it was understandably unbelievable. leaning a shoulder into the wall to steady himself , alistair said nothing for a long time , his metal hand curled protectively around the bandage at his hip. 

“ you’ve certainly made believing in you difficult. “ his words come quiet , laced with a somberness he rarely used. “ they were more than ready to gut you , you know ; i thought mother wouldn’t approve of burying her only daughter. “ he stiffly crossed his legs at the ankle , studying the landscape before him with newfound interest ; anything to escape from this conversation. “ i don’t know if i can forgive you yet. not entirely. but i can ... consent to starting fresh. shelve the past for now , work on ... creating some sort of future , i suppose. “

“ i think it’s quite apparent that no one taught these hellions how to speak to their elders , let alone their betters. i’d argue no one taught them to speak at all - their vernacular is some horrid amalgamation of echonet argot and whatever a toddler found funny when browsing the dictionary. “

—— FAMILY MATTERS // multiple sources 

who is your muse’s favorite family member , if any - why ? ( @clonelyboy​ )

probably his uncle franklin , on his father’s side ; partially because he was the only one that paid him any mind as a child , and partially because was the most like-minded to him in the family. from what he’s heard , his paternal grandparents had a similar discipline style to what alistair was brought up with , which both of the men disagreed with passionately , and both were run through the military ringer , which is where their opinions differ - unlike alistair , his uncle actually enjoyed the lifestyle , and was second only to his own brother in ranking. because they were cut from similar cloth , alistair wasn’t allowed to have too much of a relationship with him as a boy , his parents fearing he’d start having ideas and opinions and such. while they began contact and began to have a fairly close relationship as alistair aged , he passed away when hammerlock was only 28 years old. he hopes he’d be proud of him.

yes and no. he knows for certain he’d be better than his parents were , but they set the bar too low to quantify. alistair likes to think of himself as a fairly logical man , and looking at all his life’s experiences , he can’t see himself being an award winning father - he struggled at being a decent spouse at first , being a time bomb of wanderlust with irritabillity in his veins. by the time he feels he’d be ready to settle down completely , he might as well be dead , and he refuses to abandon a child because his number finally came up. he knows if he ever found himself in parenthood , he’d approach it the same way he’s approached everything - with passion and resepct and patience. he just doesn’t know if that’s enough. 

how important is family to your muse ? ( jakobscrest )

throw the whole clan away for all he’s concerned. they’ve never done anything but ignore him when he begged for help or trampled him down further - the extended family he’d never be anything but civil towards , but if he never had to see them again he doubts he’d care. his immediate family can respectfully go rot , though there is still a great weight of guilt and fear for thinking as much. the only family he cares about at this point is the one he’s created - those on sanctuary , the vault hunters , the man he’s chosen to be the husband of ( even , sometimes , claptrap ) - finding them was the greatest accomplishment of his life , and he’d sacrifice anything for them.

“ HARDLY. unless you count ‘ alistair ‘ , considering he’s one of few that calls me something other than my surname. ‘ al ‘ , sometimes , if he feels like being a bit of an ass , plus the usual assortment of dears and darlings and such. frankly , i think we’re both a bit too old and jaded to sweeten each other up every time we talk , but ... well , we all have our weak moments , don’t we ? “

“ OH , DEAR. i can’t quite tell you for certain - it isn’t as if i just opened my agenda and picked whichever day seemed best to call him such , but it certainly wasn’t an immediate thing. it must’ve just slipped out , i suppose ; i do adore his name , but it can be a bit of a mouthful in certain situations. etymologically , winny hardly makes sense as a nickname for him - something to do with vowels and nonsense , i was never the best at the principle outside of latin - but that’s ... partially why i still use it. it isn’t a nickname , it’s something much kinder than that. i didn’t even realize it myself at the time. i thought i was just ... shortening a name down to a managable size , when in reality , my heart had made other arrangements. so , to answer your question in a less roundabout way , it was quite early on in our relationship ; i’d say before i even consciously chose to love him. “
