August 9, 4-7 pm August 9–August 23, 2015 Open hours: Sunday, August 19 and Sunday, August 23, 2-6 pm or by appointment to [email protected] Karolina Gnatowski is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Fiber and Material Studies at The School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago. She received her MFA from SAIC in 2007 and her BFA from The University of the Arts, Philadelphia in 2002. Exhibitions include the Brooklyn Academy Of Music, NY, Monique Meloche Gallery, UIC's Gallery 400, Loyola University Gallery, Chicago, The Franklin, Adult Contemporary, Chicago, DoubleBreak, San Diego California, SideCar, Hammond IN, The Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, Weglowa Gallery, Bialystok, Poland, Northern Illinois University, and Lollapalooza. Notable publications include Studio Life: Rituals, Collections, Tools, and Observations of the Artistic Process by Sarah Trigg and the UIMA "Bauhaus Now" catalog. Her work has been reviewed in the Bialystok Gazeta, Blackbooks, Chicago Art Review, New City Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Artist Writers, and Hyperallergic. Dan Gunn is an artist, writer and educator working in Chicago. He received an MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007. Recent exhibitions include Impromptu Airs a solo exhibition at Monique Meloche Gallery, the New American Paintings Midwest Survey at the Elmhurst Art Museum. He has also shown at Marine Contemporary in Santa Monica, Art Los Angeles Contemporary, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago for the 12 x 12 New Artists: New Work series, Lloyd Dobler Gallery, Columbia College A+D Gallery and the Loyola University Museum of Art. His work has been reviewed in Frieze, Art in America, Artforum.com, Artslant.com, Newcity Magazine, New American Paintings, TimeOut Chicago and the Chicago Tribune.

AFTER BOOK: SHERYL OPPENHEIM + ANNE VIEUX Opening Reception: Saturday January 31st, 6-9pm Curated by SMALL EDITIONS Additional Hours: Thursday 29th & Sunday 1st from 12-5 The relationship between artists/books serves as a reference, documentation, and as pieces in themselves. This exhibition coincides with Printed Matter’s LA Art Book Fair and Art Los Angeles Contemporary, highlighting the relationship between artist book and contemporary studio practice. AFTER BOOK exhibits recent work by two artists, Sheryl Oppenheim and Anne Vieux.The selected work was produced directly after each artist collaboratively published an artist bookwork with Small Editions, NY. The selected works at Hammock Gallery demonstrate the process of creating bookworks effect had on each artist’s studio practice. Anne Vieux’s flatworks use compositional devices, and digital processes, parallel to those used in her book, Transitory Flatspace. Almost sterioscopic, these works mimic page spreads as a way to work with ideas of vision, light, painting ground, and framing. Vieux’s rich colors are transfixing and vibratre between flat and dimensional. Sheryl Oppenheim’s black and white paintings combine strong graphic symbols (drops, diamonds, grape bunches) and repeated layers. These paintings incorporate screenprints of earlier paintings, a process that stems directly from her experimentation during the creation of Black Hours, Oppenheim’s book produced in collaboration with Small Editions. Her direct painting and printing techniques manipulate the picture plane in a way that calls attention to the work’s limits as an object. http://www.smalleditionsnyc.com

Hammock Gallery is pleased to present Are You Experienced?, a solo exhibition of new works by Brooklyn based artist Ash Ferlito.

Are You Experienced? mines the countercultural iconography of decades past. For her first solo presentation in Los Angeles, Ferlito has collected dozens of embroidered patches, each one a totem of identity – a declaration commemorating and broadcasting an experience or social alignment. In their most generous description, they are insignia of a countercultural army, announcements of sexuality, and a projection to the age old question: ‘who am I?’

By recontextualizing the patches into large felt tapestries, the hollowed out artifacts become venerated and take on the full weight of the present, acting as lightning rods for all our current societal woes. Are You Experienced? universalizes these subcultural markers and threads a line through histories of feminism, exclusivity, and extra-linguistic communication, further problemetizing our utopian desire for social progress.

Ash Ferlito was raised by sea otters in the foggy clime of Monterey, CA. She holds degrees from Yale University, Tyler School of Art and is a member of the Skowhegan class of 2012. She lives and works in NYC.

It's like - Haynes Riley October 12th, 4-6pm and by appointment

For its inaugural exhibition, Hammock Gallery is pleased to present It’s like, a solo show of new work by Haynes Riley.

It’s like is comprised of a series of paintings on reiterating shaped panels. The motif of a home plate hangs in varying orientations like a flip book animation of Dorothy's uprooted house swept up in the wind. The resulting toppling movement ripples out into diverging associative meanings both symbolic (memory, place, family, and Americana) and art historical (Imi Knoebel, Richard Tuttle, Ellsworth Kelly). The panels have been sharply cut—like a BFF charm necklace—two halves caricaturishly split from a mono zygotic whole.

The accompanying sculpture takes the form of a stairwell. On each step lies a stone etched with a motivational message. If the looping movement elicited by the panels exists in two dimensions, then the literal and psychic ascension of the stairs suggest a desire to rupture that loop into a spiral. This symbolic rumination on movement ultimately serves as a backdrop for Riley’s investigation into the flux of personal identity across time and space.

Haynes Riley was born and raised in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2011 and a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. He has participated in residencies at Ox-Bow, ACRE, Open Book, and Vermont Studio Center. His work has appeared in numerous exhibitions around the United States, including group shows at Cranbrook Art Museum (Bloomfield Hills), Scarab Club (Detroit), Co-Prosperity Sphere (Chicago), Vessel & Page (Pontiac), Work (Ann Arbor), Ford Gallery (Ypsilanti), WOPOZI (Minneapolis), and The Bedfellows Club (Minneapolis), and solo exhibitions at Outer Space (Facebook), a clean poorly lighted space (Menomonie), A+ Gallery (Minneapolis), and The Hills Esthetic Center (Chicago). Riley is founder, director, and curator at Good Weather, a contemporary art gallery in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Recently, he curated In All Kinds of Weather at Gallery Protocol (Gainesville) and presented work as part of 9/50: A Southeast Arts Presenters Summit at Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. He currently lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
