The magitek machine, towering high, going up, and up‘ — a grey eyesore scraping the blue skies. Frankly, it’s a bit insulting that Milites thinks they can intimidate them through height. The chocobo he rides upon gives a soft kweh as he waves it away, ushering it to the safety of the forests before the machine went on a rampage. Across the field he sees Eight, holding his own — but they have to take out the main machine before this battle can end.

A healing card rides the winds straight to his friend, a small support, but more importantly contact. Blue eyes meet brown, Ace’s silent words ‘ — I got this! ‘ Eight punches a Milites soldier harder. correction : ‘ —We got this.’

— and they do.

One jackpot shot in the machine’s leg and metal debris flies over the battle field. Unsteady, it wobbles sparks flying, and though Ace doesn’t see it, he hears the metal crumple after another resounding smash. Fist versus metal, it sounds strange, but all his bets are on Eight.

As the dust clears, the magitek weapon destroyed under his own weight, they can’t afford to stand still so he doesn’t.

A high five, transitioned to a fist bump, and finally a nudge of shoulder against shoulder. He would say ‘ —Thanks,’ but Ace already knows he doesn’t have to speak.

One more nudge, a grin ‘ — I’ll see you at home,” and trails of vermilion scatter in opposite directions wrecking havoc in their paths.

He draws back like he’s burnt, hands clutched at his sides. “ I -” and he pauses with one exhale of breath. Blue eyes looking at Eight’s face, falling, falling into his own very empty hands. It’s what they do, move on, and he does, but he never really feels better. Perhaps it was because he could never remember who left that hollowed out hole in his chest , or maybe it was because he remembered too much of the vestiges of pure feeling; that fluttering sensation where the mind does not remember but the heart is so very sad, burdened with broken half-thoughts. (I’m so tired, but sleeping makes it worse. There’s so many dreams I can’t remember. Eight, it hurts does it ever stop for you? Is it okay to be sad?)

He cracks a smile, and only says “ — Yeah, you’re probably right.”
