Happy birthday to Alexander Calder, who was born on this day in 1898. Calder’s mobiles are among the most often imitated works of art of the twentieth century and yet remain the most singular. Coined by Marcel Duchamp for Calder’s objects in 1931, the term “mobile” is a pun in French meaning both “motion" and “motive.“
