Taking on Saarinen.

In 1962 Eero Saarinen completed what is to date the world’s most beautiful airport terminal for TWA. The now defunct flight center at JFK is going to be converted into a luxury hotel, the TWA Flight Center Hotel, by MCR Development and JetBlue Airways. The plan is to restore the terminal while also adding 505 guest rooms, 40,000 square feet of meeting space, 6-8 food and beverage venues, and a spa.

Don’t mess this up guys.

"Paintings Begin Where Language Fails"

Nobel Prize winning writer, Gao Xinjian, is also a renowned artist, and if you haven't heard of him, you should hear about him.

Gao uses traditional Chinese ink-painting techniques to create a poetic, powerful, and intellectual narrative that is somehow contemporary, universal, and uniquely and traditionally Chinese.

A champion of a return to painting as a pure, intuitive form of expression, Gao's goal is to "produce works that are neither figurative nor abstract, paintings that are about emerging shadows from his deepest self and could not be rendered in anything else but in ink".

In 1988, after staging a play (he's also a playwright) that was critical of Beijing, he became a person non grata to the Chinese Government and has lived in France ever since. Despite being the only writer born in China to ever win a Nobel prize, his written work is still banned there.

Gao has shown a tremendous and unwavering sense of self and courage in standing up to Communist censorship, and his painting, equally unmoved and uncompromising, seems to be refreshingly immune to the trends and fashions of the contemporary art world.

Author Daniel Bergez has recently released a new book, "Gao Xingjian: Painter of the Soul" which includes over two hundred reproductions of his work and an interview with the artist on his life and motivations

Vamizi Island, Mozambique.

Vamizi Island, set in the Quirimbas Archipelago off of the northern coast of Mozambique is the epitome of what the owners call "barefoot luxury".

Dotted with only the occasional villa or lodge, guests to the Island can find themselves walking for hours along a beach deserted except for the occasional Green Turtle.

The Island is first and foremost a conservation project. The 'Vamizi Island Project' was established to combine tourism, wildlife conservation and community development in a way that benefits and protects the area.

New Playlist - July 2014

Because I love you, I've made you a playlist. It includes some pretty sweet tracks by the likes of Poom, Beck, La Roux, Lykke Li, A Rainmaker, Kailo and Chromeo.

Who the hell is Poom? They are an amazing Parisian Indie-pop duo with a really, really great, but slightly dirty sounding, name.

Also, don't skip 'Stay With Me' by Sam Smith. I put the original in there, but if it's too 'sweet' for you then check out this remix by Rainer + Grimm, and then go look for your soul.

Scent of a Woman - Byredo.

Perfumer Byredo, who I've spoken about before, is quickly becoming the new master of scent. Founded in 2006 by Ben Gorham, this Stockholm based fragrance house is collecting quite the cult following, hoards of scent addicts flock to their counter at Barneys for their fix of the good stuff.

My personal drug of choice has always been Gypsy Water, pictured above, but I've recently begun to dabble in their new scent, Inflorescence, also pictured above.

In Inflorescence, Gorham designed a "floral scent that would capture the strength and beauty of wild garden blossoms, just as they reach their dramatic peak". Gypsy Water, however, is a bit more masculine and raw, "a glamorization of the Romany lifestyle, based on a fascination with the myth. The scent of fresh soil, deep forests and campfires evokes the dream of a free, colorful lifestyle".

Another favorite is Bal D'Afrique, "A warm and romantic vetiver inspired by Paris in the 20's and its infatuation with African culture, art, music and dance. A mix of Parisian avant-gardism and African culture shaped in a unique and vibrant expression. The intense life, the excess and euphoria is illustrated by Bal D'Afrique".

By God, if those descriptions aren't everything.

If you can, I recommend popping by a Byredo counter near you, their selection is breathtaking and vast and will require some time. However, if you can't, it's unlikely that you'll go wrong with one of the three options listed above.

Oh, yes, they also have cologne. That's right Men, while you're buying your lady friend a bottle, go ahead and treat yourself too. She'll thank you for it...

Dressing like Bond... Sort of.

Few would argue that there is a man more inimitably stylish than a certain spy known fondly as Bond.

Given that, luckily this isn't about him... but it's pretty close.

Mr Porter has just announced the launch of a new men's wear label, Kingsman, inspired by the looks from the upcoming movie "Kingsman: The Secret Service". It's exactly what you would expect from a line inspired by a dapper group of British Secret Service Agents; Savile Row silhouettes, umbrellas, Cutler and Gross eyewear, George Cleverly footwear, Drake's pocket squares, and a custom-made watch from Bremont.

Director Matthew Vaughn spoke about the films styling process, which involved hiring Arianne Phillips to take the lead, “It was a very organic process that began when I started writing the screenplay. To be honest, I was so sick of watching films that did not bear any resemblance to the wardrobe of a 21st-century gentleman. I wanted it to be totally modern, yet highly reflective of the elegance of the past.”

After seeing the bespoke Savile Row suits, designed specifically for each cast member, in action (get it?), Vaughn knew he was onto something and approached Mr Porter to help him take the concept to the consumer market.

The collection, launching in September 2014, will consist of 60 items ranging from suits, trousers, shirts, jackets, overcoats, furnishings, and accessories. Pricing will range from $1,120 for jackets, $1,625 for overcoats, and $1,790 for suiting.

Now if you could just behave a bit more... Bond-y.

It's that time again... time to start planning what you'll be wearing in the desert, mud, or sweltering city streets this festival season. Given that clothes seem to be optional for an overwhelming amount of festival-goers, I'm going to focus on what really should really be obligatory for all, and that is shoes. Footwear can be especially tricky given the need to combine practicality with, well, less practical concerns...
