Yeah, I think that shipping is the least of the problems here. This episode is still enjoyable but only if you treat is as an AU of some sort because it didn’t feel like Sherlock at all. Totally another series, really...like some kind of Halloween special...

hi. sorry to bother, but why do you think did John say he saved Sherlock only because M a r y told him to? He had no fucking idea Sherlock was in danger! If Hudders or Molly or anyone else told him about that stupid plan, he would go and save him too

Because it’s not about communicating a plan.

And John certainly did know that Sherlock was in danger. Molly told him that he had weeks to live at this rate. That should have been enough, but it wasn’t. He needed to be told the plan in order to fulfill it. Mary didn’t account for that.

Mary told Sherlock that John would save him because that’s what John does, but that’s not what happened. John didn’t save him; John abandoned him. John beat the snot out of him and then left his cane in Sherlock’s hospital room as a goodbye and I’m sorry and thank you, and intended to never see him again. John is painfully aware that he failed. He feels the weight of those expectations and knows he isn’t good enough to meet them.

Yes, if anyone else had told John Sherlock’s plan, he certainly would have rushed to the hospital. But the plan, which Mary proposed and Sherlock acted on, is predicated on the belief that John would never abandon Sherlock when he was in so much danger. It was Mary who believed that Sherlock’s suffering would act like a bat signal for hero!John, and it was Sherlock who put his life on the line because of his faith in him. so it’s their expectations that John failed to meet, as far as John’s concerned.

He wants to be that guy. He strives to be. But he fails. And he feels his failures disqualify him for the faith and trust that Mary and Sherlock have in him. 

So he tells Sherlock that he only went to the hospital because he found Mary’s message. He wanted Sherlock to see how he failed, and they were both wrong about him. And then he tells Sherlock to find someone else, because obviously he’s worthless.

It’s a terribly vulnerable moment.
