The fabrics in my wardrobe are giving me a sweet tooth. Now I don't consider myself a girly girl - I like sneakers and jeans, climbing trees and getting my knees dirty. And yet somehow I have managed to accumulate a candy palate of sugary pastels and floaty fabrics that make me want to paint my nails powder blue and eat macaroons. I rarely wear these colours. In my mind, I won't get taken seriously as a wannabe journalist/human rights lawyer if I'm prancing around in baby pink. But every now and again, particularly if I come across a particularly pretty sweet treat, I get the urge to dress head to toe in cute.
So here are my yummiest pieces.
The first is a vintage silk blouse from Brick Lane indoor vintage market. It is large and boxy and unflattering, but it is also an irresistible combination of 80s aerobics leotard, barber-shop quartet and amateur league bowling.
The second is perhaps my favourite item of clothing ever. It is an antique dress that my father bought for my mother before they were married, from an antique shop in Cornwall. It is a flowing mass of shimmery oyster silk and mint chiffon skirt flowing from a zig-zag waistline, the most elegant thing I've ever seen with its drop waistline and ankle-length skirt. It looks like the kind of dress Daisy Buchanan would wear. Or a mermaid. It almost got destroyed when I wore it to a New Years Eve party and RB spilt red wine down the skirt. But clothes need to live a bit too, and he kissed me at midnight so I forgave him.
The third is a Forever-21 cat amongst the vintage pigeons, a very synthetic but also very pretty skirt with buttons all the way down the front, that flips around your bare legs in a carefree summery kinda way. It looks like its been splashed with paint, and with a white tee tucked in and a pair of scruffy white converse, it makes an adorable spring/summer outfit, perfect for romping around at a photogenic picnic.
The fourth and final is a French purchase, from a tiny shop in Tours called Madame Vintage. Mumma loves scarves - she has a drawer packed with them, and for as long as I can remember she has used them to belt her jeans. So it was her sartorial eye that was caught by this beauty, a white silk square patterned with kitsch sketches of mannequins and flowers, and splashed with pink, blue and yellow. It has yet to make an outing but this may be the summer where it gets draped casually around the neck over a loose white teeshirt, teamed with a topknot and clubmasters.
