Young Beethoven, court musician in Bonn
Will I ever see you again?
Thomas and Wolfie ā tragic besties
HOLY FREAKKKKKK
Thinking about Beethoven for a second. But wth Iām always thinking about him, ANYWAY sorry for being a bit ramblyā¦
When biographers talk about Beethovenās ācruelty,ā they usually point to moments where he humiliates other people and treat it like proof of some inborn meanness/harshness. But what it actually looks like (to me) is a man who learned very early that dignity is fragile and conditional.
Ludwig grows up being publicly shouted down, beaten, displayed. Respect is never something he is given. It is something that can be revoked at any moment. So when he enters social spaces later, he does not take politeness at face value. He tests it.
How far will you let them push you?
Is this real respect or just for show?
If I have to put on a show, why shouldnāt you?
Those moments where he forces someone else into humiliation are not about pleasure. He is not savoring it. He is watching the reaction. Because every time no one stops it, it confirms the same ugly lesson: dignity is cheap, and people will trade it for comfort without hesitation.
That is also why his humor is so sharp and ugly sometimes. It is defensive, preemptive. If he exposes the weakness himself, it cannot be used against him later.
It does not make the behavior kind. But it makes it understandable. š
Tbh I think Beethoven is not trying to dominate for fun. He is trying to understand the rules of a world that hurt him before he understood it, and he has not yet learned how to be powerful without someone getting hurt in the process.
Some self indulgent Thomas and Wolfie art because I love this duo to bits! The context is theyāre attending a masked ball somewhere in Italy and having the time of their lives. Just two brilliant prodigies letting themselves be teens just for one night!
Ok this needs a song š¤
Boys from Bonn: before Ludwig van Beethoven became a legend in Vienna, he was an awkward, headstrong teenager navigating love, rivalry, ambition, and friendship!

OH MY GOD, THANK YOU š Iāve been thinking about making these for a while now. And YES, the Stephan von Breuning mention!! Iāve brought him up a few times waaay back, so it honestly felt right to give him the spotlight this time. I really think heās one of the most important people in Beethovenās life (a true homie! Never left his side till the end) even though we all know he wasnāt exactly easy to be friends with⦠š
Boys from Bonn: Ludwig Wears a Wig part 2 (part 1 HERE!)
Ludwig is forced to confront a truth heās been avoiding for far too long: he actually looks good wearing one. š
Boys from Bonn is a series of vignettes based on Beethovenās life as a teenager in his hometown, pre-Vienna! Iām making more of them, so please keep an eye out!
