バレンタインの調査をさせていただいた雑貨屋シモンの人気店員さんに「今を輝く～」のインタビューです。実はこの店員さん、風真玲太くんはわたしの幼なじみの高校生。だから、こういうのって少し照れくさいところもあるのですが、カリスマ店員さんとしての一面をしっかり取材出来ればと思います。

Rough translation:

An interview with a popular clerk of General Store Simon. Actually, this clerk, Ryota Kazama, is my childhood friend. That’s why there are some things that make me feel embarrassed, but I hope I can cover the aspects of being a charismatic clerk.

今日、商店街で偶然、風真くんに会いました。風真くんはアルバイト中だったのでシモンのエプロン姿でした。 先月の取材の時にもらったチョコお返しだと、手作りのクッキーをもらいました。ホワイトデーからだいぶ経っていたのでお返しにイイものが無くて、わざわざ作ったのだそうです……ありがとう！

Rough translation:

Today, I met Kazama-kun by chance in the shopping district. He wore General Store Simon’s apron because he was working part-time. I received a handmade cookie for the chocolate gift I got him last month. It’s been a long time since White Day, so it seems that he made it purposefully … Thank you!

Today is White Day! I got a ticket for the preview of “The Road of First Love” from Goro-sensei. The original story is based on the novel by Habataki City author, Aizawa Shugo*. When I headed to the seat just before the start time, Kazama-kun was in the seat next to me!! He also got a ticket from Goro-sensei…

先日、編集部の先輩にはばたき山のスキー場に連れていってもらいました。スキー初心者のわたしは滑るというよりも、常に転んで尻もちをついていてばかりで、色んな人のジャマをしてしまったかも…… でも、冬ならではのはばたき山のキレイな景色を堪能することができて本当に楽しかったです！

Rough translation:

The other day, I had a senior editorial staff take me to a ski resort at Mount Habataki. As a beginner in skiing, rather than slipping, I was constantly falling and I might have been a nuisance to many people… But it was really fun to be able to enjoy the beautiful scenery!

スキーの次はやっぱりアイススケート！森林公園地区のスケートリンクをご紹介です。手すりを掴んだままですが、リンクを何周か滑ることが出来ました。だけど、またも尻もちをたくさんついて服はビショビショです…… 転倒するたびに巻き込んでしまった皆さん、本当にすみませんでした……！ 

Rough translation:

After skiing, ice skating! There’s a skating rink in the forest park area. I still grabbed the railing, but I was able to slide a few laps. But again, it’s a shame that the clothes are stuffy… I’m really sorry to everyone who got involved every time I fell down…!

Rough translation:

Today, I am visiting General Store Simon to find Valentine’s gifts. It seems that fashionable and practical accessories such as stationery and passcases are on sale. soooo i’m just full of giddiness ever since the news came out that there will be another TMGS game after ALL these years!!! it’s called Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side: 4th Heart and follows the same storyline of a childhood friend from Habataki City. but we can see that the graphics are waaay better than the previous games and did you see just how charming Ryota Kazama is!? he is officially the heroine’s childhood friend, the poster boy and the ‘prince’ of 4th Heart! totally can’t wait for the full release!

jumin’s are on the broader side. you can usually spot a couple of cat scratches or paper cuts here and there, not particularly soft, but not rough either. he’s almost always holding tension in them, so they get pretty veiny. subconsciously flexes them out of habit, or rubs his palms to get rid of the ache that can sometimes grow there. your favorite thing is watching him pet elizabeth, he’s so gentle and soft with her that it melts your heart. he carries that same softness whenever he touches you, one of the only times his hands fully relax is when he’s running them up and down your arms, maybe even holding your face in his palm. he likes to rest his hand on your thigh or run his fingers through your hand idly while doing paperwork. his hands are cold most of the time, not icy, but the chill is still noticeable. he has steady hands and a good grip. he likes to wear rings whenever he gets the chance, gothic style ones especially. when the vampire that he invited had come to the rfa party, jumin was obsessed with all his fancy rings. he usually has his hands crossed over his lap, and he doesn’t talk with them often. a wave of the hand to employees is most all you’ll get.

zen has soft soft soft hands. spends a lot of money on lotions and salves, so when he touches you it feels like genuine silk. not super lanky, but not broad either. they're just… very even and pretty. has a very tiny dusting of blood freckles on his knuckles, but you’d have to look closely to notice them. probably hand models in his free time. fluid motions whenever he uses them, it’s nice to watch the way his hands move especially while he’s acting. he holds a lot of passion in his hands while he preforms, it’s like they tell a story of their own. you like to hold your palm against his, twirling and twisting your hands around at random. he loves to run the backs of his knuckles down your jawline before placing down gentle kisses there, while telling you how much he loves you. he wears jewellery whenever he’s feeling it, likes a lot of different kinds too, wears fashion rings most of the time. his hands are on the warmer side, so if you’re cold all you need to do is hold his hands for a few minutes and then bam, you’re all nice and cozy again. his hands are usually in his pocket, playing around with a pack of cigarettes, or resting at his side.

yoosung’s hands aren’t particularly soft, but they aren’t exactly rough either. on the shorter side compared to everyone else too. his touch is still so gentle and comforting, especially whenever it comes to you. he holds your hand tight and tells you how much you mean to him, it feels safe and secure, he feels like home. his hands are insanely hot all the time, even when it’s cold outside, so he’s like your own personal little heater. has a barely visible coat of freckles over his knuckles and a few scars here and there, faded now but still noticeable. most of them are from cooking accidents, some from cats. he likes to run his fingers through your hair, or up and down your arms. in the middle waiting on game lobbies he’ll hold your hand, running his thumb across your skin with a smile. you like to watch as he plays video games sometimes, his hands get so tense during tough matches, so you help him massage out the tension when he’s done. he gets horrible shaky hands whenever he gets really nervous. doesn’t wear rings or anything, doesn’t like the way they feel, but he does like bracelets. has a matching bracelet with you that he wears pretty much all the time. he talks with his hands a lot, but when he’s idle, they're shyly tucked away in his pocket, fiddling with his thumbs in front of him, or crossed over his chest.

jaehee’s are soft, she uses a lot of hand sanitizer so there’s almost always some lotion at her side, her hands are silky and smooth because of that. not as much as zen’s, but still close. she gets a lot of papercuts is the only thing, but besides that her hands are overall smooth, shorter nails, she has a nail biting problem, and she’s a lesbian!! 🗣 so she prefers them that way. she taps her fingertips on things whenever she’s thinking. her hands are warm, not hot, but it’s comfortable and cozy whenever she holds your own. she likes to run her fingers up your wrists, leaving little kisses behind the trail. cups the side of your face with a big smile while telling you how much she loves you, running her thumb across your cheek. like jumin, holds tension in her hands so they have a tendency to ache sometimes. she holds them together or rubs them when she’s nervous. if she's still working under jumin no, she doesn’t wear jewelry or nail polish often. the most you’ll find is ink stains on the sides of her hand. but in the coffee shop she’ll start to explore more, finds she likes dainty little rings and neutral polishes. she talks with her hands when she gets excited or when she’s really into talking about a topic. her hands are usually busy tapping a table or holding something most of the time.

seven has some long lanky hands, we’ve seen his hacker fingers. a mix between broad and lanky. they aren't delicate and soft, but not bulky either. his hands are hot, like absolute furnace level hot. he gets sweaty palms easily. he has a rather rough touch, but not at all bad, it feels like saeyoung if that makes sense. he likes to squish your cheeks between his hands, run his fingers down your palms, warm your hands up in his own. a little rough when he touches you, kind of when you see something really cute and you get all tense and you just wanna shake it around, he has that with you sometimes. he has really short nails, some scars scattered around as well, a few burn marks from his childhood. he has a ton of freckles all over his knuckles especially in the summer. shakes his hands around for awhile whenever they get sore, which is often due to his job. steady hands and grip. he wears jewelry while in cosplay, besides that not very often. but he does paint his nails when he feels up to it or is bored, which is more often. probably did dick decals once because he thought it was the pinnacle of humor. talks with his hands heavily, very animated while he speaks. when he’s not using them they’re usually in the pockets of his hoodie, or busy annoying someone. pokes saeran’s cheeks which earns him a slap of the hand in return.

jihyun has the prettiest hands, lanky but sturdy. no shakiness at all, steadiness of an artist, but when he gets nervous, emotional, or has caffeine, they do shake pretty bad. super soft and silky, and like zen, his hands are very fluid and lovely to watch as he works, especially while he’s painting. surprisingly warm hands, never hot, but they're comfortable and cozy. he does get cold very easily though, so you’ll have to help him warm up on occasion. his touch is gentle and careful, touches everything like it’s art, especially you. he’ll trace your skin with his fingers, leaving kisses in their wake. he always touches you so softly, like you’re glass or the finest of arts. he likes to “paint” your skin with his fingertips sometimes. he holds his own hands and rubs them together when he’s feeling anxious. he has well kept nails, he’ll wear nail polish if you want him to hehe wears rings but only with meaning. has matching rings with you and jumin. bracelets sometimes too, the cute woven ones. but again, they need meaning for him. you can normally find paint stains scattered across his hands. he talks with his hands very gently, it’s not super animated and fast like seven, it’s slow and calm. his hands are usually kept behind his back, or loosely at his sides.

saeran’s are very pale and almost translucent. blue veins, cherry fingertips, red knuckles. they’re big like seven’s but a little skinnier. surprisingly they’re insanely soft, he doesn’t use anything for that, it’s just natural. his freckles are much more faded than saeyoung’s, he has some scars, more burn marks than his brother does. he’s incredibly insecure about his hands, so he’ll pull his hoodie down to cover most of the skin there. freezing cold most of the time, he has bad circulation. so he loves when you hold your hand within his, running your fingers down his own, kiss his knuckles and whisper “pretty.” when you look at them. while he’s not sure he believes you, it still means a lot to him. he likes to trace things you’re insecure about and whisper “pretty” back. his nails are short, he bites them from anxiety a lot. you suggest painting them so he won’t bite them as often, at first he’s not sure, but quickly finds that he really likes the way that looks. prefers when you paint his nails though, claims he doesn’t know how to do it, but he does. he just likes being close to you. very shaky all the time, doesn’t have a steady grip. he’ll only wear rings that you get for him. doesn’t talk with his hands unless he’s really excited about something, almost all of the time they’re in the pocket of his hoodie, or intertwined with your own.

elizabeth the third’s hands are the softest out of the entire rfa, so soft that even zen can’t compete. warm and cozy, but can be painful when shes hard at work making the meanest batch of muffins you ever did see directly on top of your stomach. watch out. looks cute, but still deadly. when jumin’s walking past the couch she’ll stick her paw out and take a swipe at his leg when he’s even a minute later past feeding time. rolls all cutesy if she does manage to draw some blood, because she knows absolutely no one, not even zen, could stay mad at a face like that for too long.

D.N.Angel: First Love/Scumbag Dark Theory

Dear Abyss,

I am writing to you, the endless void that may swallow my manic screams because I came to a startling realization late last night. My friend tagged me in an article about the return of D.N.Angel, a childhood favorite of mine, which I haven’t touched since its hiatus back in 2005. Excited, I messaged another friend, and I began rereading the manga while we gushed about how much we ship Dark and Riku (that has got to be a WHOLE other post). I was explaining to her how the mangaka was steering Risa and Dark together before the hiatus struck, and went to look for evidence to back my claims, when I realized something, or, rather… remembered something…

the premise of the series.

So, Abyss, as any adequate reader understands from reading the very first chapter: the transformation from Daisuke to Dark, and vice versa, is triggered by a pounding heart caused by love, or, as I will call it from now on, the “doki-dokis.” Early relationship summary is as follows: Daisuke has the doki-dokis for Risa, who is charmed by Dark, who gets the doki-dokis for Riku upon seeing her, who is taking notice of Daisuke. Chapter 1 is excruciatingly important in the two lines of exposition it gives us via Emiko’s charming lips (apologies for the quality in advance). Here is the first:

“As long as you both love each other, you’ll [Daisuke] turn back to normal.”

Anyone who keeps reading knows that Daisuke’s affections eventually switch over to Riku. He gets the mad doki-dokis for my girl. Riku, in turn is crushing on my son. They “…both love each other….” right? (That’s also a whole other theory that I’ve yet to flesh out) They confessed to each other way back in Chapter 9 (though I guess you can argue that Riku’s insecurity stops it from becoming a truer love, I don’t really think that counts).  It’s obvious by their date/set-up at Azumano Joyland that Riku and Daisuke are in love….

So why?

Why does this occur?

Why does Daisuke still transform into Dark in Stage3 Vol.5 when he goes on a date with Riku? When he has the doki-dokis for her and her him? It completely goes against Emiko’s claim that he [Daisuke] will turn back to normal [stop transforming completely] “As long as you [they] both love each other….” 

Dark tries to explain this away in Stage.2 Vol.2, of course.

But something tells me that that statement rings false. Throughout the entirety of the series, Dark keeps reiterating to Daisuke, “I am you.” So much so that someone could make a collage out of it. In the mirror world, Daisuke himself holds the last feather even though Dark says that he [Dark] has it. It sounds a bit contradictory, but it still aligns with his thoughts in Chapter 8

Daisuke has the tenth feather because he can be Dark. If it had been in reverse, Dark would most likely not have the feather of memory because he cannot be Daisuke without the assimilation. I’m sure Dark might be flinging some bull around with that shoddy “We are one” explanation. Then the question remains, why is Daisuke still transforming into Dark?

My answer: the second important line in Chapter 1

“Your first love must turn out good,” Emiko explains with an impish smile. Daisuke is still transforming into Dark regardless of Riku’s returned love for him because she’s not his first love.

Riku isn’t Risa.

Riku isn’t Daisuke’s Holy Maiden.

Risa is.

And this is when my thoughts spiraled into a more sinister place. Although it appeared that Sugisaki-sensei was pushing Risa and Dark together… is she really? Perhaps it’s just my bias speaking, but there are only four instances of Dark reverting to Daisuke without the help of his Riku-brand doki-dokis.

1) Risa assaults Dark, surprising him with an unsolicited kiss before stating her feelings (I left out the pages where it’s just Daisuke fleeing Keiji) in Stage.3 Vol.1

2) Risa embracing Dark and declaring her devotion to him in Stage.3 Vol.9

3) Daisuke’s body is too fatigued for Dark’s continued manifestation in Stage.3 Vol.13 (I skipped the pages where Satoshi diverts the cops)

4) Satoshi transforms and saves Risa, the shock of which Daisuke points out in Stage.3 Vol.23

The second instance is possibly the only time Dark gets the doki-dokis from Risa that aren’t shock-related. What if it isn’t affection or romance that’s making his heart pound?

Excitement, anticipation… what if Dark’s heart picked up because he found a loophole in his “endless existence”?

In Stage.3 Vol.8, Daisuke sees Dark walking down an ominous hall and hears Risa’s claim.

Daisuke thinks Dark is finally taking Risa seriously. He thinks his shadow is beginning to fall in love with her. 

But what if he’s not?

What if Risa’s voice echoing in Dark’s soul isn’t there to show his changing impression of her, but, rather, his hope for assimilation? What if Dark is manipulating her?

During the fireworks display in Stage.3 Vol.9, Dark tells Risa to give up on him and kisses her forehead. He “returns” Risa’s stolen heart; he rejects her gently, kindly, leaving her with a good impression of him. Just as Daisuke thinks, it appears that Dark is beginning to return Risa’s love. 

If that’s true, then why is he willing to risk Risa for the sake of his own pride, his vindication against Argentine? His eyes are terrifying when he expresses his fury towards Argentine. 

A sadistic thrill runs through his body at the thought of hurting Argentine. His connection to Daisuke is cut, but the boy is shouting with all his soul to prioritize Risa’s safety. Hell, even Risa’s voice can no longer reach him in his rage.

Is it because Argentine put his new plan in jeopardy in stealing away his most precious pawn? Risa is Daisuke’s Holy Maiden, regardless of his new love for Riku. Dark needs her to finish his play. Argentine’s trespass against him isn’t whisking away Dark’s Holy Maiden; it’s for interfering with his new plans for assimilating with Daisuke.

In fact, Dark is so caught up in trying to “break” Argentine, that he strays far from Risa during his fight. The tower collapses upon Qualia’s death, and Risa plummets down to the unforgiving earth. Dark is too far away, but, to Risa’s fortune, Satoshi is there to transform and catch her (the cause of the aforementioned fourth reversion).

Though Dark definitely has a darker side (pun unintended), he isn’t one to let the girl he loves come to harm. He’s willing to risk life, limb,and pride for Riku when she is in danger or pulled into his supernatural affairs:

1) Chapter 4 – Secrets be damned, Riku’s safety is the priority. We can tell that it’s Dark due to his address: “Riku,” not “Harada-san.” Daisuke wants to keep the secret, but his panic completes his transformation into Dark, who begins to show, time and time again after this chapter, that he wants Riku to know the truth.

Dark, in Daisuke’s body, saves Riku from Ukawa’s assault in Chapter 7, but there’s nothing on the line for him here, so I didn’t include it.

2) Stage.2 Vol. 10 – Dark refuses to move out of the way of Krad’s blast, so that Riku won’t get hit in the crossfire. It is only after he’s taken the blow and returns Krad the favor that he goes on the offensive.

3) The Second Hand of Time Vol.4 – Dark more than likely had the power to fight off all those guards, but Riku is with him. He makes a small sacrifice of his ego and chooses the safest route to get into the towers: surrendering. 

I mean… look at his face. He doesn’t exactly look happy to be surrendering. He looks more upset that he has to take the boring and safe way in order to protect our girl.  Of course, once Riku insults his pride, he does a bit of damage control, and probably leaves her tied up for her own safety (didn’t include that last part).

When Risa is kidnapped by Argentine, a Phantom Thief Dark note is left for Riku, promising to bring her sister back. Dark puts Riku first; she is different.

Unlike Daisuke and Risa, whom he calls his possessions, claiming that they belong to him. He looks down on lots of people. Declaring two to be his possessions is just another manifestation of his supposed superiority.

They belong to him. They are his to use and his to move. When something bad happens to them, especially when he assigns them as his proxy, he feels that it reflects negatively upon him, like a subordinate embarrassing their boss. He isn’t afraid to name drop and manipulate them. Dark even tries to play up that Risa will be sad at the dance in Stage.4 Vol.11 when he’s trying to persuade Daisuke to let them switch places for five minutes (he even sneaks a glance to see if it’s working before getting distracted by Daisuke’s dork clothes for the dance).

Riku never seems to be included in this list. He loves her madly, but never once tries to lay claim over her. When she begins falling for Daisuke, Dark calls him a “rival.” He doesn’t tell his host to stay away from his belongings, but “rings the bells of war” instead. He cannot manipulate her, he refuses to, as shown when he allows her to keep her memories of being inside Daisuke’s painting in The Second Hand of Time Vol.6

Dark doesn’t want coexistence, like Daisuke proclaims to desire in Stage.2 Vol.11. He never echoes that coexistence is his goal.

He wants to be free to love and have his love reciprocated. 

He wants validation.

He wants assimilation.

Without taking over his host’s body, Dark will never be “enough.” He will never have the doki-dokis on his own.

With coexistence, he will remain incomplete, yearning, and unloved.

Dark will stop at nothing to receive Riku’s love.

I theorize that this is what Sugisaki-sensei intends to make Daisuke understand later in the series, which is why Daisuke has these thoughts in Stage.2 Vol.9

Daisuke didn’t feel the regret at the time, and he won’t, not until it’s too late. Why will he come to regret it? It can’t be because Dark tried to reveal their secret to Riku way back in this chapter; that isn’t a serious enough of an offense for someone as patient, forgiving, and dependent as Daisuke. Dark had to do something heartbreaking, even treasonous in order for Daisuke to regret any care he feels towards his shadow.

During the dance in Stage.4 Vol.11, Dark overtakes Daisuke while the boy is in a state of emotional confusion.  Risa begs Dark for a dance, for him to be hers. The look he gives her is calculating, pupils contracted to pinpoints and face stoic; it’s a complete contrast to the dilated pupils, smile, and blush from when Riku bandages his hand with her headband in Stage.3 Vol.4.

Again, he is tender with Risa, telling her that he is hers alone, even though he “returned her stolen heart” on their previous date. It’s just in the next chapter, Stage.4 Vol.12, when Daiki drops the bombshells on us. One is that in order to preserve his existence, Dark always proposes assimilation with his hosts (most likely due to the fact that they’ve always loved the same person). The other is…

a suspected red herring.

If Dark doesn’t, in fact, need the validation of the first love, what if he’s been manipulating Daisuke into thinking he loved Riku, so he [Dark] could trick Risa into choosing him over his host? Daisuke was so sure that he loved Risa, but Dark convinced him otherwise in Chapter 8 (again with the “I am you” spiel).

In the beginning, Risa was also pretty touch-and-go with her affections.

Disturbed when Daisuke stopped liking her to date her sister, it only drove her further away from Daisuke and into Dark’s arms in Chapter 7. Uncomfortable with all the change, Stage.2 Vol.1 shows Risa questioning everything.

It could pettiness, or intuition, but Risa feels that there’s something wrong with Daisuke’s new love for Riku. However, her desperation to see Dark anywhere and everywhere makes for good white noise inside her head. Because so long as she has “her Dark-san,” she doesn’t need anyone else. Dark knows this, her obsession with him, her seemingly undying and unconditional love. That’s why in Stage.4 Vol.12, he’s ready to pop the big question:

Seriously? No expression? If an entity living an endless existence finally got someone to love him and choose him over his host, you think he’d at least crack a small smile. But, no, Dark needs to ask with a business voice because hope can’t crack his poker face.

Risa is understandably confused in the next panel, and Daisuke has unspecified doki-dokis until his partner and friend, and totally-not-manipulator, Dark tells him the good news in their souls!

And how does Daisuke take it? Our sweet cinnamon roll who wants coexistence over assimilation or Dark’s disappearance?

APPARENTLY OUR BOY’S OVER THE MOON.

AND LA-DEE-DA, EVERYTHING IS GOING ACCORDING TO PLAN. DARK IS JUST ECSTATIC OVER THIS DEVELOPMENT IN THE NEXT PANEL.

LOOK AT THAT SATISFIED GAZE.

It’s like he’s saying to himself, “I’m almost there. Just wait for me, Riku.”

TL;DR: Either only the Wing Tamer’s first love becomes the Holy Maiden or Dark tricked Daisuke into thinking he’s in love with Riku in order to manipulate Risa into choosing him [Dark], so he can freely, finally, pursue Riku and be rid of his unbearably endless, loveless existence.

And that’s it! That’s my First Love/Scumbag Dark Theory. I hope I’m wrong. Please, please, PLEASE let me be wrong! I really love Dark and Riku together, and just Dark as a character. I don’t want him to be the secret final boss!

UPDATE (4/27)

@mint1412 reminded me of the love potion in Chapter 3! If we go by the most popular and widely believed workings of a love potion, the it will always be the first person the consumer sees. So although Dark was the one to “administer” the love potion…

He isn’t the first face Riku sees after receiving the love potion.

But she gets a clear view of Daisuke.

Maybe Risa was onto something when she felt how off Daisuke’s interest in Riku was? The spill looks like an honest-to-god accident, so I don’t think was an orchestration by Dark (but maybe he used it to his advantage if First Love Theory rings true). However, it does open up the possibility that Daisuke and Riku might not actually be in love. Daisuke get’s an old-school case of Risa-brand doki-dokis when he sees “her” (Insomnia-Riku dressed as Risa) at the fake dance in Stage.4 Vol.8…

… and Riku is upset at seeing Risa dance with Dark in Stage.4 Vol.11 (it’s up to debate whether it’s because she suspects Daisuke and Dark or because she’s beginning to fall for Dark, but my trashy Dariku heart hopes for the latter).

Maybe she’s calling out to Daisuke because she knows? Maybe because she’s examining her feelings of love? I don’t really know.

However, if Daisuke and Riku are truly only in love due to the potion, then maybe these are the signs showing that it’s losing its effects. Daisuke’s affections are returning to Risa, and Riku is beginning to fall for Dark on her own, no sweet-talking or good-looks necessary.

Still doesn’t change the fact that Dark might be a scumbag, though, and if it turns out that he did orchestrate the whole love potion fiasco, I WILL PUNCH MYSELF. It goes against all rational thought to make your love fall for your main rival, your main obstacle in existing; it’s a whole other level of masochism! If First Love Theory proves true, this could have all been a ploy to get to Risa. Dark is far from a fully rational being (callback to him prioritizing breaking Argentine over Risa not dying), and he’s been rejected by all of his love interests for generations.

So what is a few months in comparison?

Hi! ^^ Since you didn’t specify the characters you want me to write for, I decided to pick three on my own. It didn’t seem fair to pick my faves, so instead, I used an online list randomizer on the list of RFA + Saeran’s names.

I’m gonna write scenarios for the first three characters in this list, hope that’s okay with you! ^^

No, no, no.

Why today?

Why today of all days?

Why did you oversleep today of all days?

You’ve been dreading this day for a week now, but the interview you’re having in less than ten minutes is for your dream job. Memories of little you, running around and telling everybody about what you want to work when you grow up,  start flooding your mind and a small smile forms on your lips. Nothing’s changed since then. You’ve always been working hard for your dream and now you’re so close to making it turn into reality that your heart flutters at the thought of it.

Then why, you wonder, did your brain decide to let you indulge in the comfort and warmth of your bed an hour longer today? You’ve been having troubles sleeping ever since they called you to schedule the interview, the ball of anxiety in your stomach keeping you from functioning normally. But last night? Last night you fell asleep as soon as your head hit your soft pillow.

As unlucky as you feel today, you can’t help but also feel happy. A soft giggle escapes your lips when you stop at the traffic light. An elderly couple with their gorgeous golden retriever stops right next to you, the dog’s tail wagging happily. You feel your luck coming back to you when you drop down on one knee to pet the animal and it moves to lick your cheek in a moment of love and affection. Your day can’t be that bad if the god of dogs is smiling down upon you, can it?

Your mood now significantly improved, you join the crowd crossing the street when the light turns green. You’re still deep in your thoughts when your ears start picking up someone’s yelling. Your eyes focus on the people on the other side of the road and you swear they’re all looking and pointing at you. A chill runs down your spine and you feel your blood pumping in your head. The people you were crossing the street with are running in panic, leaving you alone in the middle of the road to try and comprehend what’s going on. You turn around and you feel time slowing down.

A moment of distraction. That’s all it takes for someone to become an innocent victim on the road. You were focused on thoughts about your future, but now you wonder if you’ll ever see one. Your eyes find the driver’s terrified ones through thick glass, her hand tightly clutching her phone.

Oh. She’s been texting someone.

You really want to stop time and ask her if this message was so important that she risked hurting someone to send it. Was it worth it?

It’s too late now, though.

Time picks up pace to return to its normal flow. You close your eyes and hope that when you open them again, you’ll be in your bed, the warmth of the one you love most in this world wrapped around you like a soft blanket.

Unbearable pain hits you with its full force and your brain shuts off. The next thing you know is you’re falling down in an endless pit of darkness.

Zen

It’s rare for Zen to have a day off, so that couldn’t have happened at a better time. Today is a very important day for you and he wants to make sure you’ll be able to take a proper rest when you get back home.

The take-out he ordered is on its way, the dishes are spotless, and he’s just about to change the sheets of your bed when his phone goes off. Thinking it’s you, he all but runs to the other room to pick up.

His smile fades as soon as a man, his voice stern and clear, but unfamiliar, asks to talk to Mr. Hyun Ryu. Zen can count on the fingers of one hand the number of people who still use his birth name, so his initial reaction is that of pure surprise.

Different types of thoughts start swirling around in his head when the man pauses for a second. “Mr. Ryu, do you know a woman named MC?” Zen’s blood runs cold, fingers gripping the kitchen counter with force he never knew he had in himself. His ears are ringing, eyes looking at what’s in front of them, but not seeing.

He doesn’t bother locking the door when he leaves the house. To hell with everything. Nothing will really matter if you’re not around. He hails the first cab he sees on the street, the strong smell inside the car doing nothing to distract his mind from thoughts of you. “She’ll be okay. She is strong. She’ll make it through. Yes, she’ll be okay.”

The ride to the hospital is long and slow and Zen wants to scream at the top of his lungs, irritated and angry at the world. He feels as if time itself is slowing down, mockingly showing him that nothing is under his control. He bites his lips and soon, the taste of iron fills his mouth, drawing his attention away from all the red traffic lights standing in his way.

As soon as he arrives at the hospital, he wastes no time getting to your room. He hears voices telling him that he shouldn’t run in a hospital, but those warnings sound distant and frankly, right now he doesn’t care about any rules.

His eyes widen at the sight of your tiny body looking even smaller with all the tubes and other medical equipment attached to it. The tears he’s been holding back until now burst forth like water from a dam as he runs towards you. He kneels next to the bed, hands moving to grab yours.

The feeling of your skin on his pulls him out of the trance he’s been in since your doctor called. He’s desperate for more, desperate to hear your voice and see your bright smile, but you can’t indulge him this time.

He doesn’t know when he’s dozed off, but he realizes he’s waking up to a small, barely noticeable movement that has piqued his sleeping brain’s curiosity. Your eyes are still tightly shut, your breaths faint and sustained by complex machinery, but he’s sure he felt your fingers move.

Hope fills his heart as he feels that tiny movement once again. A cry of relief echoes through the room, soon followed by Zen’s soft laughter. You’ll be okay. You’re strong. You’ll make it through. And he’s gonna be with you every step of the way.

Jumin

He skims through the contents of another folder of neatly organized documents, but finds himself unable to focus on his work. As his thoughts keep going back to you, he decides it’s time for a break.

With a deep sigh, he turns around in his chair. Usually, the view of the city from this high up calms his nerves and makes his worries seem small. Today, however, he can’t shake off the feeling of something not being quite right.

Dark clouds, heralds of an impending storm, loom on the horizon and Jumin’s bad feeling gets even worse. Just when he’s about to check his phone, it rings, an unknown number on the display making him hesitate before picking up.

Jumin’s many years as a businessman, along with the various trainings he went through as a kid, usually work in his favor. Analyzing situations and people and calculating different outcomes come naturally to him, but nothing has prepared him for this.

As the brief conversation ends, Jumin feels his knees going weak and the blood draining from his face. Fingers trembling, he steadies them for just enough time to dial driver Kim’s number and tell him to wait for him in front of the building in a minute.

After a couple of deep breaths, he feels his usual calmness slowly coming back. His heart is pounding in his chest, but his mind is clear. You need him. He needs to be strong for you and like hell he’ll fail at the most important job in his life. With a newfound determination, he heads to the elevator, fingers already working on dialing the number of his doctor.

Driver Kim’s years of experience shine through as he navigates the city with skill and ease. In less than fifteen minutes, Jumin is at the hospital, the beating of his heart getting louder and louder. He enters the building as if in a trance, the curious looks of people doing nothing to distract him from thoughts of you and your well-being.

Afraid of what he might see, he hesitates for a second at the door of your room. A deep breath steadies his resolve and he goes in.

He feels like someone just kicked him in the ribs, forcing out all the air that filled his lungs a second ago. Purple welts cover most of your pale skin and the sight is enough for Jumin to feel the world starting to spin around him.

He slowly moves towards your bed as if afraid to disturb the delicate balance of of all the tubes and life supporting machines in the room. Your breathing is faint and he feels overwhelming fear spreading through his whole body. A silent scream escapes his lips as he falls on his knees next to you, head buried in your pillow.

Why? Why would such a cruel thing happen to a brilliant person like you? Why do you have to suffer? Just why? He lifts his hand to remove a loose strand of hair from your face, the soft feeling of it making his eyes water. His fingers trace your jawline, their soft trail ending at the deep cut right above the corner of your lips. “Please… Please, don’t leave me, my love… Please, stay with me…”

In what seems like eternity, he dozes off on the chair next to your bed. His fingers are intertwined with yours, a gentle expression on his tear-stained face. A soft smile tugs at the corners of his lips when he meets you in his dreams, laughing, happy and very much alive. Dreams he’s determined to turn into reality.

Saeran

A soft smile forms on his lips as his fingers touch the delicate petals of the blooming primrose. Eternal love. That’s what this flower symbolizes, perfectly resonating with the feelings inside Saeran’s heart. If he’s sure about anything in his life, it is that he will love you forever.

You left the house in a hurry this morning, sparing only a second to give him a quick peck on the lips before bolting out the door. It’s partially his fault, he admits to himself. He tried to wake you up, but you looked so cute, so peaceful in your slumber that he decided to let you sleep a bit more while he made your favorite breakfast for you. Things did get out of hand since he became too preoccupied with cooking, but he knows you’ll be alright. You’re the strongest person he knows and he’s positive you’ll come home with good news.

The sudden sound of his phone going off startles him. Thinking it’s you, he picks up with a broad smile on his face. An unfamiliar voice says his name and he feels his muscles grow tense. Thoughts of his past distract him for a few seconds until he makes out your name and his blood runs cold.

Moments later he’s outside, phone still clutched in his hand. The hospital is not far from where you two live and he figures he’d get there more quickly if he runs.

Cool wind bites at his cheeks as he moves through sparse crowds of people. A golden retriever tries to join him in his race against time, but is stopped by its elderly owners. If Saeran felt a hole in his chest where his heart used to be just a few minutes ago, he’s now all too aware of its pounding, his heartbeat echoing in his ears.

He only slows down for a moment to ask the receptionist about you. When he gets the information he needs, he starts running towards your room, the outraged shouts of the few people he pushes out of his way falling on deaf ears.

He storms in your room startling the nurse who’s checking your vital signs. She tries to protest, but the look of desperation on Saeran’s face convinces her otherwise. After a long minute, she leaves the room, giving him an empathetic look on her way out.

Breathing still rapid, he approaches your bed. You’re unconscious, pale, massive bruises covering the soft skin he adores touching. He tries to steady his breaths, but his efforts fall short as tears start falling down his cheeks and muffled sobs fill the tiny room.

When night comes, he makes it clear to the hospital staff that he’s not leaving your side. As moonlight starts sliding in through the curtains, Saeran’s eyelids grow heavy, the constant beeping of the heart monitor lulling him to sleep.

Dreams of you fill his slumber, a red thread connecting your little finger to his. He tugs at it to try and draw your attention to him and you turn around, a brilliant smile gracing your beautiful face. As you start walking towards him, he notices the thread stretching and tangling on its own, as if alive. Seconds later, he feels familiar warmth enveloping him in its comfort as your soft lips touch his. Then he remembers the most important thing about the red thread of fate. It will never break.
