and it's actually serious as fuck to me when you think about it because famously america down ntdp survivor william smith not reposting anything about the literal olympics gold and mack's whole "i just.. said... he just asked me how i was doing" bomb during his post olympics interview and then add in the stick and i might as well hang myself in the public town square and don't. even. let yourself think about the "you need to be proud."

is it casual if i'm your boy best friend and i keep reminders of all of your achievements for you because i'm so proud of you and how much you've accomplished through all of the adversity you face and would it be fine if you gave me one of your olympics sticks so i could display it in my house and remember every time i look at it that even playing on the world's largest stage wasn't enough for you to forget me or want anybody but me with you forever.

and additionally of course i want your stick in the front and center of my collection to draw the eyes of everyone who walks into my house because i would never try to hide what you achieve. and forget all the people who ask you if i'm jealous of all that you have because why would i be jealous when someone who's that much of a star is devoting every inch of himself to me.

I listened to interviews with Gavin McKenna & Ivar Stenberg yesterday. They both came across really well. Very mature, thoughtful answers. They're both eager to play in the NHL next year.

So far, the Sharks have taken/are taking Reid, Carels, Verhoeff & Stenberg out to dinner. This doesn't mean too much; in fact, it's sometimes a little misdirection to throw off the other teams about your intentions. But it's still of note.

One interesting tidbit: Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects saw a little handshake between Mike Grier & Mack's agent Pat Brisson. So... it's possible they've already ironed out Mack's contract extension.

It got me wondering what Will might do. It could actually be in his best interest to wait one year before he signs. If he has the kind of season I'm expecting, with super high production, he could get himself a nice paycheck. Waiting could hurt him though, if he gets injured or isn't as productive, or some of the other forwards really start to shine.

My gut says he'll sign shortly after Mack signs. Mack's contract will set the tone for the other young players. (They won't be able to ask for more than he does, for obvious reasons.) The length of time Mack commits to will also be interesting. I'm thinking he does 5 years, but he can sign for up to 8.

It will be a big number, but how big? Crosby famously takes less money than he's worth, so his team has more cap space to keep other high-level players around. I can absolutely see Mack taking this approach. (Side note: Bedard is expected to re-sign with the Blackhawks soon, and I'm really curious which way that'll go.)

If Will signs his extension this summer, and he signs it for the same length of time as Mack, that definitely makes a statement. If he doesn't, though, I don't think that's particularly alarming. I think it's just Will betting on himself to prove how valuable he really is.

many thoughts about the nyt article but very endeared by mack being described as "quiet and more of a natural listener", and as letting crosby do most of the talking (ofc). reminded perhaps of a certain someone's "he was all quiet at first" comment 🤔

much to be said about the pressure being put on mack to perform on the ice but i wonder if the pressure for him to take on these huge leadership roles isn't a bigger source of friction given his personality, at least in the short term as he is ofc still growing and maturing as a person. it'll be interesting to see how he adjusts to captaincy and develops a communication style that isn't like leading by example lol. also thinking back to toff's (?) exit interview comments about he's starting to speak up in the locker room a bit more. he's a brave boy he can do it! but i do think it'll be an interesting process for him. much to ponder in one's rpf mind palace

of course no surprises here but it does further the point that mack is actually well-equipped to take on the sharks captaincy, and that his leadership style will naturally evolve as he gains seniority and experience

Can you tell is a bit more about macklin and his temperament at BU that you were talking about? 👀

Well it was pretty well known that he was very hard to get along with when he was at BU, although keep in mind he was 17 and also The Next Big Thing for the draft, so there could be A LOT of factors going into this. It seems to have taken a while for him to have made friends with some of the guys, most of the leg work for that was done by Aiden*, and he famously did NOT get along with his captain** and the two fought a lot, and then there's another player he fought with as well. Mostly that fighting was verbal, although there's instances he'd get physical too. Their coach seemed to have gassed Mack up a ton as well, so who knows what the environment was like for everyone else the year he was there. *I know especially with the Marathon Monday stuff that some attention was shone on BU players that have basically stayed under the radar but are known as having been friends/roommates with Mack. Most of them have maintained very close relationships with Aiden, which is probably one of the big reasons why Mack can slot back into things when he visits. I'm not saying these guys are more Aiden's friends now than not, BUT... **said captain has spoken positively about Mack in interviews post-BU, now whether that's because he's smart enough to say the right thing or they get along now who knows
