They end up at a picnic table overlooking Lake Yahola, the afternoon sunlight hitting the water just right so it sparkles. It’s a pretty placid lake with trees lining the edge. There are a couple old guys fishing out on the other side, but not many on this side. Ponyboy hesitates— is Randy a swimming guy? A guy who loved being on the water all summer? If he is, is that something Ponyboy is… Ready for? He’s had to work pretty hard to be indifferent about bodies of water bigger than the bathtub.

exactly. I hate when people gush about him and completely ignore the fact that he’s drunk out of his mind the whole book

Agreed. He isn’t just some funny guy. He’s a drunk bum. He has a mother struggling to take care of him and his little sister, yet he doesn’t get a job and drinks all day instead. Tbh, he’s no better than his own father, Steve’s father or Johnny’s parents.

Agree to disagree on that point. Absolutely, his alcoholism could make him a burden on his family. But I don't think we can call that even remotely similar to the physical abuse Steve and Johnny faced at the hands of their fathers.

Two-Bit also deeply cares for the other boys. Yes, he's made poor choices, but he also cusses out Johnny's mom at the hospital. He may not always show it in ways that are relatable to us, or are perfect, but it is so very clear that he does care about people around him, he's stuck in the cycle of addiction. If anything, his character is a great example of how classism sets people up to fail, even if they have the potential to be better/different.
