Once it actually gets dark, Darry really gets the fire going and the adults gather around that instead of the coolers or the grill. They roast marshmallows. Ponyboy had gone inside and gotten Soda’s camera—he’d been put on picture duty, anyway, since they all knew Soda would get wrapped up in messing around with the kids – and Two, apparently, as they’ve been trying to slip ice down each others’ shirts pretty much all night. When he comes out, DJ is busy tearing individual pages out of an old notebook, crumpling them, and tossing them like a basketball towards the fire. He misses most of them, but when he gets one he grins gleefully and announces: “Fuck Algebra!” Tim Junior laughs. It turns out Randy brought a thick info packet from his professional development day. He tosses that on the fire. The kids all cheer as the papers curl up and darken.

He only knows that Darrel is a greaser who plays football, and Randy sure didn’t know anything about football except that Bob’s talking to some JV cheerleader in the house right now. “Your family excited for Christmas?” he asks just to ask. “Huh? Oh, yeah,” Darrel nods, sounding a little surprised. “Yeah. I got my youngest brother a book he’s been waiting for someone to return to the library for, like, a month now and my other brother a skateboard. He’ll probably break an arm or something, but,” Darrel shrugs with a lopsided smile, his eyes crinkling at the outside corners. “You?” “Oh, I don’t—” Randy started, then stops, opening his mouth and closing it a couple times. “I don’t have siblings.”
