hi hi fellow newsies fan re: character ask game, katherine plumber with 2, 3, 6, and 12!
Hi hi hiiiii!!! Ahhh I love yapping about my girl, thank you!!!
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
Her tenacity! I so admire her ability to just be like, “yes, I can do this thing, and I don’t care if you say otherwise.”
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?
This comes with a ridiculous preface, I’m so sorry:
The degree of this trait varies from portrayal-to-portrayal - like I saw this trait a lot more when I saw Morgan Keene in the U.S. Tour and less in Bronté Barbé’s KP in London, and I have to say like, as a character choice, I love it, like I would probably lean into this aspect of her if I ever (🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼) get to play Katherine (✨🔮🕯️), but as an audience member, it’s a flaw, SO the least favorite thing is a tendency to view the boys in the first act as simply a moving part in her story, a tendency that I believe comes from her privileged upbringing. I don’t think she ever didn’t care about the boys, but her main motive in act one to pursue the story isn’t for the boys’ sake - it’s for her own, to further her career, which isn’t a flaw in and of itself, she should be pursuing her career for her own sake! But the flaw comes when she views the newsies as a monolith, just a factor in this story, rather than individuals. We see it most in the scene in Jacobi’s diner (“a gang of kids who haven’t got a nickel to their name,” “a ragtag gang of ragamuffins,” etc. - again, this all depends on how Kath delivers these lines) - she sees them for their status of being poor/orphaned/etc. This changes in act two and is a huge part of her growth, which had me torn on even saying this is my least favorite trait because I do think it’s part of what makes her such an interesting character! But it is a flaw, so - from an audience standpoint rather than a writing standpoint, that’s my long-winded answer 😂
6. What's something you have in common with this character?
I feel like my writing process is very similar to hers, as seen in “Watch What Happens.” The constant swinging back and forth between, “this is great!” and “I Cannot Write Anything Ever” is so, SO very real. Also letting her internal monologue out when she’s alone (I mean, she has to because she’s in a musical but I feel like she would think out loud either way, you know??) Also the way that, especially in her writing, once she has her mind set on something, she is going to Do The Thing Even If It Kills Her. I’m very much like that, especially when it comes to creative projects.
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
She’s autistic, and has big sensory sensitives, and a big one is her long, thick hair. The feeling of it on her neck, especially in the summer, makes her want to crawl out of her skin. When she was like 10 or 11, she got a hold of some scissors and chopped off a ton of her hair. It was horribly messy, and her dad was furious, but she LOVED it. When short hair on women came into style in the 1920’s, she cut it again and never looked back.
