MarriageToxin is so smart and open-minded in the way it presents a possible main couple who is queer while taking into consideration the average target audience.

Making Kinosaki act and dress up as a woman for the whole story can appeal to prejudiced people and gradually make them warm up to the dynamic between the main characters and provide an opportunity for them to see queer people in a better light. However, at the same time Kinosaki not having to conform to the stereotypical image of men for him to identify as a guy is also a breath of fresh air in its own, especially for a deuteragonist in a shonen. I think (or at least I hope) it is a stepping stone in paving the way for more open queer representation in shonen in the future.

This is one of the reasons why I think Gerosaki ending up together is important to the themes and story itself, and making Kinosaki a biological woman who just pretends to be a guy for the plot, as some theories suggest, takes away from the story and how it handles queerness cause in that case we would go two steps back instead of a step forward when it comes to queer representation.

It would be nice to have a shounen that breaks away from the usual expectations and MarriageToxin does not shy away from writing queer people openly, Gero's sister is openly a lesbian and in a relationship with a woman for example, and this is so important to me because I need people to stop associating the idea of queer people existing solely in works categorized exclusively as bls or gls. It is only when it comes to queer-coded ships or queer-coded characters that people have a negative stance towards and tell you to pick up ''gls '' or ''bls' instead, but they won't tell you to pick up a romance if there is a straight pair in a story despite the main genre not being romance.

Queer people are everywhere, they are part of our every day society and thus, their stories and existence belong in every genre as well and should not be limited, which is why I think MarriageToxin can be a small step forward that contributes to more inclusive storytelling and the expansion of queer themes in other genres.

and it doesnt even make any sense for people to think that because, clearly, kinosaki being male affects their reading of the text so much that they have to go off complaining about it! the 'guy who looks like a girl' has only been a gimmick in so many anime! But not only is kinosaki's presentation very rarely played as a joke (hell, i bet the only reason they say it doesnt matter to the plot is precisely cause the story doesnt milk those types of jokes), he's straight up the top contender for the mc — whos inciting conflict was needing to find someone to make an heir with. yall REALLY dont see how gero falling for kinosaki is meant to challenge that?? really???

Heyyyy it's not a finished piece, and definitely not in a super presentable state, but I wanted to throw this idea out there!

Chihiro Soga, an AU where he was brought up by his mother and possibly her household, too, instead of Kunishige, whose whereabouts became unknown after the war After the Hishaku ravage the Soga household, he swears to eliminate them and Japan’s underworld for good.

Chihiro finds Enten in the basement (a parting gift from husband to wife?) and, while wandering Tokyo, encounters Shiba on one of his missions, who instantly recognizes Chihiro as Rokuhira’s. (?)

Regarding the enchanted blades, I think the Hishaku still stole them here. Chihiro finds this out when he sees some thug wielding Kuregumo ^^); The Hishaku killed the Soga family first and then stole the blades + killed Ibuki...maybe they did it because they felt they were the most complicit in hiding the Malediction? Or to spite Kunishige? I dunno!

I think this Chihiro is less socially adjusted than canon, is more ruthless, and only protects his life to continue his mission. Shiba works overtime to get him to loosen up and act more his age (seriously, he doesn't have to bow that low or always sit in seiza!)

I think he also wishes to learn more about his father…and Akemura (It’s not hard to guess his relationship to Akemura, since he has his last name) In exchange for far better swordsmanship, he’s less knowledgeable on enchanted blades and has less connections he can work with. Some people see Akemura in him...others see Kunishige in him. But, his mother and Shiba did all they could to prevent him from becoming another Akemura.

Chihiro's outfit is inspired by Meiji Restoration looks...a corset instead of an obi and a ribbed turtleneck underneath a kimono (how modern!). Even though he was raised in a traditional household, he is still part of the younger generation.
