My first finals at uni are coming up in two weeks! Let me know what your favorite tips and tricks are for studying/getting through finals week
My goals for the coming semester :
Be prepared before lectures (have a rough idea about what’s gonna happen next)
Be able to do my homework WITHOUT listening to any sort of music because that distracts me. Also, taking my homework as seriously as exams.
Participate a bit more in class, gotta show the teachers that I care about my academics.
Finish all projects and assignments at least 3 days before the deadline.
Procrastinate lesser than I do rn.
Try to pay attention to the most boring lectures also, because you never know what you’ll miss out if you doze off.
Drink lot’s of water and achieve that clear af skin.
Manage my diet carefully, because stuffing cheese burgers 4 days in a row isn’t healthy at all.
Try to wake up 15 minutes before my usual waking time.
Try to not kill myself or others during a group project activity.
Speak less, hear more (lol like I speak anyway).
Make time for family /friends, maybe just 5 minutes but that counts.
Reduce my phone usage.
Post regularly on Tumblr.
Maintain some moisturising routine because winter is coming ;)
Study in advance so that I do not experience the crippling guilt of having accomplished nothing a week before they start.
What are your favorite techniques when studying for finals?
my favorite techniques are these, by order:
1. notes
I go through the textbook chapters, read and understand the concepts I need to learn and write everything down on a notebook. Literally everything that I need to know, I write down.
If I don’t understand something from the textbook, I google, go to Khan Academy, Youtube videos, and write down the extra explanation as well.
A lot of people may argue this is a waste of time for them but for me it’s not! When I write/draw it down in my own way I understand it so much better. Most often information in textbooks is correct however not organized in the best way or exactly clear. In my notes I can change order of information, create different divisions, bullet points, insert drawings / more details, etc. that make everything much more sense to me.
After finished, I review my notes more than 3 times.
2. flashcards
I go through my notes and find the processes/ concepts/ details to memorize. I do flashcards off of everything. I use an app on my phone, so it’s quick and I don’t lose too much time.
I quiz quiz and quiz them until I know them well.
3. practice tests & exercises
I’ll find practice finals and general exercises from textbooks, prep books, online or given by the teacher and do them all. If I’m running low on time I’ll choose the most important exercises, even though I hate leaving exercises to complete! This will make sure I know how to put into practice what I’ve learnt. Crucial.
I’m not gonna lie, my work for a final begins as soon as I get the material in class, if not I wouldn’t have time to do everything that I want to do, especially if there’s a lot of material to cover.
I divide all of my work in the time I have, 2-3 weeks, sometimes more. Depending from class to class I spend more time in one of the technique than in the other, but all three are equally important to me!
study less study smart
I decided to share my notes taken from this amazing 1 hour Youtube lecture by Marty Lobdell. i really liked him and his tips, i think they are super effective and cover a lot of situations! i highly recommend it!!!!! wow
but here are the tips and examples Marty mentions, so if you don’t have the time to go through the full hour, you can just scroll down. hope this helps somebody!
Break your study time in chunks with breaks
most students lose focus at 25 minutes
it’s a mistake to keep going once you do, since you won’t actually learn anything and you’ll hate every minute of it
so when you start losing focus take a 5 minute break
do something nice like talking to someone or listening to music
it’s something you practice so with time you’ll be able to work for more time without losing focus
in the end of the study session have a big reward you look forward to
Create a study area
environment highly affects the way you act. Bedrooms are for sleeping, kitchens for eating: you’ll feel sleepy in your bedroom and hungry in the kitchen. So if you have a study area, it’ll be easier to start studying and staying focused.
study in a specific room like an office or school library if you can
if you have to study in your bedroom use a specific object you only use for studying: a lamp/desk. Make it a no-distraction, away from your bed, blank walls area.
The more active the learning, the better
80% active learning 20% passive
ask yourself: is it a concept or a fact?
learning a concept: understand/grasp/know it
put it into your own words
really think about the meaning of it
relate it with something you already know
teach somebody else. Recapitulate what you’ve learned. Talk out loud even if you don’t have anyone to teach - talk alone. Or at anyone that listens.
learning a fact: memorize it
use mnemonics
Acronyms (e.g. colours of the rainbow RoyGBiv – red orange yellow green blue indigo violet)
Coined sayings - anything popular or sayings you’ve heard since you were a child.
Interacting images – work even better if they’re weird. Creative associations make you never forget specific details. (e.g. 1 gram of fat has 9 calories: picture a fat cat – each cat has 9 lives)
any time 2 things are highly similar but not the same you will get maximal interference!! USE mnemonics!! (e.g. afferent vs efferent neurons: SAME - Sensory Afferent Motor Efferent)
Be a part of study groups
others can help you in ways you never thought before
Recognizing VS remembering
never confuse the two
while reviewing a chapter you may recognize concepts but not actually know them
and when you get to the test you won’t be able to remember any of it
so quiz yourself without looking at it
or stop in a page of your notes/textbook and ask yourself what is the concept immediately after and before it
Get your REM Sleep
get ~8 hours so you don’t undo your studying
this is how your brain stores permanent memories
without it you’re ability to remember seriously decreases
most people don’t even begin to take the advice but it’s simple: sleep better. Do better.
There’s 162 hours in a week. There is time.
reflect on what you are doing with your time and what activities you have to prioritize to succed as a student
Taking notes is vital.
right after the class take 5 minutes to expand everything you’ve jotted down, give it depth.
NOT hours later. You won’t remember half the things you wrote down.
Ask your questions to class mates and teachers.
teachers want you to succeed and it’s more than ok to ask your question in the teacher’s office or in the next class
How to use a textbook: SQ3R technique
Survey Question Read Recite Review
Survey: skim through the entire chapter in a couple of minutes.
Raise questions: e.g. what is osmosis? What is this graphic about? What is a prototype?
it causes you to look for answers and you’ll find the information better once you actually study it after. If you intend to find something you learn it better.
Start studying for tests early.
don’t undo yourself. You should only be reviewing the days before the test. don’t leave it till the last minute!
(don’t just scroll through this!!!! really think about these methods and how you can actually implement them so you can benefit from them!!! these actually work but only if you put them into practice boo good luck!)

This is not going to be a list of brands or recommendations, but a guide on how to decide what to buy, and things to keep in mind when shopping for stationery. I’m a huge stationery enthusiast and also quite good at organisation, so I hope this will be useful for some of you!
1. Planning
While it’s nice to just browse the stores from time to time, I recommend to think about what you want to buy before you go shopping to prepare for a new semester or school year. You’ll be less likely to waste money on things you don’t need, and you’ll also be less likely to forget important equipment. Keep the following things in mind:
How do you want to organise your notes etc? Do you need folders, notebooks, loose paper? Do you prefer lines, grid, dotted, or blank paper? Which size do you prefer for notebooks?
Do you need special supplies, like a set square, specific pens or pencils for art class, a calculator?
Don’t forget the small stuff - paperclips, eraser, sharpener, pen refills, glue, scissors, compasses…
Do you need a new calendar or filofax inserts? Do you want to start a new method of organisation, like a bullet journal?
Do you need flashcards, post-it notes, page flags?
Do you have to replace something that is broken or can’t be used anymore after your last semester/year?
If necessary, write a list! (You’ll find an example below.)
2. Brands & Aesthetic
I can’t write a post about stationery and not address this. You shouldn’t spend loads of money on brands or supplies you don’t actually want or need just to fulfil an aesthetic! But we need to distinguish between the “studyblr aesthetic” and people’s personal aesthetic, which is a different thing. Some like their supplies to be very minimalistic, some like it colourful or flowery, some like it if all their supplies come from the same company and who couldn’t imagine switching their fineliner brand ever in their life. In my opinion that’s a good thing - if you like working with and around your supplies, it can make studying more enjoyable! My supplies are all quite plain, but practical - I’ve learnt how thick my paper needs to be and which pens have the best flow for my handwriting. With time, you’ll get there too! I’d recommend to look at the different options in some stores and decide on what you like best. Find a balance between practicability, quality, and aesthetic - that’s easier said than done, but you know best what works for you!
3. Money
Good stationery doesn’t have to be expensive, and high-end pens or whatever don’t help you get better grades!
Get refills for your pens instead of whole new pens.
Don’t buy a notebook if you can’t name exactly what you’re going to use it for! Notebook hoarding is a real problem (trust me), and much more expensive than pencil hoarding (if that’s a thing).
Only invest bigger amounts of money in things that will last you a long time and that you will be using almost every day, for example a filofax agenda, a scientific calculator, or a slightly more expensive fountain pen.
Bullet journal does not equal Leuchtturm1917 or Moleskine, even if it seems that way. You can make a bullet journal out of any journal you have!
While I think it’s important to support small businesses (if you have any independent stationery stores in your neighbourhood and you can afford it, buy stuff from them!) - if you can’t afford to spend more than absolutely necessary on stationery, then that’s the way it is. Compare prices online and in different stores, and make use of special deals (stores often have those when school starts!).
4. Essentials & Additions
To conclude this masterpost, here’s a list of things that I’d consider essentials for a semester. Of course this may differ from person to person, and you might not need some of these things (or maybe you need additional things that are not listed here)!
Writing: two pencils (mechanical or classic ones?), medium strength, + refills if you have mechanical ones/sharpener if you have normal ones; eraser, ballpoint pen and/or fountain pen (depending on what you prefer, plus ink refills for fountain pens), fineliners/gel pens and/or crayons in 3 to 5 colours, highlighters in three colours, two permanent markers (black is the safest option)
Paper: Notebooks (size? spiral or not? number of pages? colours for each class or one big notebook for all classes), flashcards, post-it notes in two colours, page flags
Equipment: calculator (how many functions?), set square, scissors, maybe glue if you’re bullet journalling, paper clips, stapler, puncher, correction fluid, sellotape, pins
Organisation: folders and/or binders (colours?), dividers, labels for the folders if not provided, journal or calendar (inserts for filofax or a whole new calendar?), plastic sleeves (I’d say 10 to 20)
Possible additions that might not be necessary for you:
Printer paper, printer ink, laminating sheets
Washi Tape, stickers, other inserts for your bullet journal/calendar
Laptop sleeve, additional charger, USB stick, HDMI adapter
Textbook sleeves, bookmarks
compasses, rubber bands
pencils in various strengths, highlighters/crayons/gel pens in various colours
additional inserts for your filofax (addresses, year overview, coloured paper)
magnets, posters, whiteboard markers
coloured paper/flashcards
non-permanent markers (e.g. for overhead projections)
… (can be added to!)
I hope this was helpful! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
Introduction Post
Hey fellow studyblrs! I started this page about a year ago but haven’t real touched it since. I am at my first year in uni now and wanted to pick back up what I started last year.
My name is Gabi (she/her/hers) and I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering. I am an avid reader (fav author is Stephen King) and huge animal lover.
The classes I am currently taking are: Engineering Analysis 1, Spanish through Literature and Film, Derivative Calculus of Multivariable Functions, and Accelerated Inorganic Chemistry.
Feel free to reach out and say hi to me or send any tips you have my way! I’d love to make some friends in the community and learn lots from you all! <3

3|2|17 this week…i’ve remained ridiculously unproductive, i don’t understand why i’m like this?!
omg @studyfulltime using my desktop wallpaper!!!! thank you so much!!
Here’s my bujo spread this week. It’s different from my previous spreads’ layout and idk how i feel about it lol (●´ω`●)

Please understand:
i’d rather work harder than most because i care instead of doing everything to appear smart & perfect. i don’t think caring should be viewed as a negative thing (why are you wasting your time, you don’t NEED to, etc) and i just wish people could understand and accept that.
Hey fellow Studyblrs!
Looking for inspiration for new original content! I would love to hear what you guys would like to see!
(ex. My handwriting, 100 days of productivity, pics of my bullet journal, books I’m reading, stationary i recommend, etc.)
Also I will respond to any questions asked and always follow studyblrs/bookblrs back!
Love you guys 😘
