The past couple of months can be described as what one might call a dry spell. I hardly pencil sketch, let alone produce anything digitally.

What could I say a lack of inspiration feels like? The harder I search the more discomfort I feel, so I don't bother. I wait for something to come.

This woman grabbing a fruit from a tree is the last thing I produced. I started the sketch on the iPad and continued it into its final form using brushes from True Grit Texture Supply Chromagraph set. I wanted her to be graceful and natural, not concerned about anything else but her presence at the base of that tree. Her eyes closed as though in meditation.

SIDEWAYS (2004)

This is one of those movies where all of the elements that make for great cinema are perfectly aligned. I actually read the book by Rex Pickett before I saw the movie. I couldn't imagine that the movie would even come close to the quality of the book, but it did, and then some.

Paul Giamatti is just a master of his craft. One of the best. Not to take away from the entire cast - they are also top notch.

I'm a huge fan of environments - weather, time of day, backdrops, elements in a scene. Everything that can put me right there inside of the screen as though I'm living it. Sideways takes me to Solvang and Buellton; I'm right there next to the buzzing of the bees on the grapes soaking up the sun.

The screenplay is spectacular and honestly if you haven't read the book I cant recommend it enough.

I've been away from Tumblr for a couple of months. It was not intentional - in fact, the only reason I didn't log in is because I have two factor set up and I didin't feel like grabbing my phone to do it (I try not to keep my phone near me while on my office computer).

During this break, I spent a significant amount of time looking inward: practicing mindfulness and thinking deeply about life.

Spring is upon me and I share with nature the experience of rejuvenation, rebirth, and the blossoming of my life.

I've lost some people and gained others. I've had heartaches and triumphs. All of it magnificent.

I've drawn a lot and noticed that I don't draw for the piece - meaning I don't draw for a desired result. I draw because it feels good to do it and, therefore, many of my drawings are random sketches. Pages and pages of random drawings. Some of them are done on Adobe Fresco, which I've shared here.

BTW I bought a bunch of amazing Photoshop brush packs and textures from G.A.R.M., Retro Supply Co, and True Grit Texture. So much fun! If you need recommendations for brushes and textures let me know. I have most of their popular products.

Happy Fun Club - origin story

I was in the 6th grade.

There was a kid named Aaron Lau - an early 90s foreign kid. He had a strong accent and a different way of dressing.

In an attempt to make friends, Aaron approached me and my buddy Alex in the hall. He handed us each a Snickers and a little flyer.

"HAPPY FUN CLUB" it read at the top. "PLAY GAMES AND WIN PRIZES"

Aaron was trying to make friends by passing out flyers and candy bars to encourage schoolmates to join a club he started called THE HAPPY FUN CLUB.

I didn't join the club, sadly. I wasn't mature enough to see through the social and cultural boundaries all around us for what they were: illusions. To me he was some strange foreign kid who wanted to make friends by starting a silly little club. If I could go back, I would have joined that fucking club.

Anyway I'll never forget that moment. Happy Fun Club.

This is what history will speak of the MAGA "Christians" who from one side of their mouths praised the words of Jesus, declared virtue, and professed democratic values - and from the other demanded subservience, scoffed at the suffering of others, and abandoned empathy.

They sent in police on horseback and shot rubber pellets at journalists. They carried with them tear gas, batons, and hostility.

The escalated military presence was in response to the people's resistance against the unlawful kidnapping of immigrants and people who look like immigrants.

Beneath the reprehensible dystopia was a flow of solidarity - an aura, invisible to the naked eye and immune to hegemonic poison, connecting everyone in their opposition to an authoritarian outbreak.

We have in common our humanity. It is but a natural response to protect one another from those who seek to unjustly force their will upon us. They despise class mobility, fear any challenge to the status quo, and guard the crypt of massacres where they attempt to bury their past.

The irony of how this nation was built in the first place is not lost on me.

I grew up in Los Angeles. I have a peaceful nature... and I have a street nature - equally trained in survival as an animal in the jungle.

Baby, this is L.A.
