favourite fictional character : this is an unfair question lololol ummm! if I had to pick one from Genshin, it's not actually Alhaitham, funnily enough haha. I relate to him and enjoy him immensely, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Wanderer or Nahida without a doubt. From Fire Emblem, it's easily Claude von Reigen, no doubt at all. Those are sort of my focus right now, so I'll just leave it at them. :)

There was a smartass answer to be had here, and Alhaitham knew that fully well. And maybe on another day, at another time, in another light, or in another corner of Sumeru City, he would have given it. Maybe, if Kaveh didn't look quite so earnest, or if there was any hint of goading or even sardonicism to his tone, Alhaitham could have rolled with it and given him something to get uppity about, an outlet for the ire he refused to give its proper due and time without being poked. Maybe, but no such opportunity arose, and Alhaitham didn't need to ask to know where in the city Kaveh's eyes had been drawn.

"I suppose they lose their mysticism, after a time." he remarked, crossing his arms. "But I'd imagine. . . in order for a place to be 'unhaunted', you have to determine the root of the haunt. And be prepared to assume responsibility once the process has begun."

Was Kaveh really ready for that? To unpack that burden? Not with Alhaitham, he was certain. But if he was. . .

"If I catch a cold from your stargazing, I'm adding medicine to your rent." His eyes flicked up to the clouded sky - he knew that wasn't what Kaveh was doing, but to acknowledge his actual concerns and meet them with interest? Talk about the fastest way to clam Kaveh up that he could imagine.

He'd listen, if Kaveh was ready. Alhaitham just doubted it. Highly.

        In honor of the roommate’s big coming home day, I’m posting my Alhaitham build. No, they won’t be on the same team, but yes, Alhaitham will be carrying Kaveh through the leveling process on his back. I’m honestly just super proud of this build haha

    I’m still working on his artifacts, tbh! I’d like. to get a full Gilded set on him, but with Nahida as his buddy. . .

    His EM gets pretty up there! This was only with two light mirrors, so it gets up to 921 if I fully use his burst, but it could get even higher if I got that gilded, I think. .  .

     These were the words Alhaitham found amidst the first few days in his new home, words that rang within him as strongly as anything his grandmother had ever bid him. There, amongst the books that he felt the pulse of his family within, the books that raised him, that would continue to guide him, he knew how he must live, the convictions he held dear, and the ideals his loved ones held for him- ones that persisted even now after each of their passings.

    It is no surprise that Alhaitham’s grandmother had a massive influence on him. After the abrupt death of his parents in an accident, Alhaitham was raised by his grandmother. Despite grieving for her lost son and daughter-in-law, she knew what her duty was at that moment: to raise Alhaitham in a way that would make her lost loved ones proud. To give him a life and opportunity to succeed and flourish. Grief had it’s place: her grandson, now essentially her child, needed her.

    So she raised him with the best of all of their expertise. Her own Kshahrewar knowledge, the Vahumana influences of his mother, and the Haravatat wisdom of his father, all wove a tapestry more complete than any one Darshan could have supplied ( not to mention her later contribution of applying for inter-Darshan permissions for his classes ). This myriad knowledge sharpened a mind with a whetstone to an almost impossible sharpness and gave rise to a boy that she remarked as potentially having “been given too much share of wisdom” ( much like his father ). Proud as she was, she would always remind Alhaitham how unique his perspective was, to take pride that he was different- “Being different is a gift.” This shaped his attitude of how to view the criticism and opinions of others: a gift was something that could be enjoyed by any, but it did not mean that anyone would enjoy it. Whatever boon he had to offer, he himself could appreciate; if others didn’t, that was fine. He had something to be proud of in his uniqueness, and his intellect and confidence was not so cheap as to be bent by misunderstandings and harsh words from people who’s opinions should not be given power over him.

    In much this way, his grandmother had shaped his outlook on life, on himself, and how he interacted with the world around him:

“You are such a smart child. Many such people have large egos and a propensity to act on their own. You are outstanding and possess a broader horizon than ordinary people. This is not a bad thing, but you must take care to have a clearer mind than others. You must understand that vain pursuits are but dust, and that you must discern your path with the greatest wisdom.”

    In this way, defining him as an ‘egoist’, one who is preoccupied with oneself and the gratification of one's own desires is not an entirely false statement. He respects his grandmother’s wishes- for him to live a peaceful life, for him to keep a clear mind, to keep his horizons broad and his mind open to new knowledge from unexpected sources. In deference to his family who gave him so much and wanted for so much for him . . . how could he not ensure that he was in a stable job with a cushy house, leading a carefree and comfortable life? What more could they have wanted for him? And to sabotage that well-being for the sake of others ( without proper remuneration or mutual gain, that is ) seemed not only antithetical to himself and his ideals, but harmful to others as well. Alhaitham will not disagree if someone calls him ‘selfish’. He, however, can see that not all accuracies are always correct. Or, more to the point, selfishness is not the evil, reprehensible trait people take it for. Sometimes, selfishness can help some survive, while altruism can ruin you.

    In deference to his grandmother’s advice, Alhaitham also tends to act alone and apart from others. This is more in an effort to obtain his own holistic views and impressions of something without the influence of others prior to clouding his initial intuition with someone else’s experiences. His ego is more born of a desire to live well and pay back the memory of his family, as well as out of an inherent confidence and self-assuredness, a comfort within himself as to who he is and his own capabilities, rather than a malicious self-importance. This ‘skirting the edges’ of social circles and Akademiya was majorly born form his grandmother’s advice, his desire to keep a clear mind and low profile and ascertain that any decisions he made were his and his alone, were guided in his own best interest.

Arms crossed firmly over his chest, a scoff escaping him, "Perhaps because I deserve the title, unlike some people I know. Why? You don't have an issue with it, do you? Some people seem to actually like me!" at least he hoped they did.

"As if a vast majority of people would want that title. Your pride rears up in the most unreasonable of places." He quirked a brow. Not that he minded the name, no- he just found it odd. But the way Kaveh's hackles raised from just a simple question. . . as usual: defensive beyond reason.

"Why do you seem to attach your self worth to such a moniker? Does it somehow benefit you academically?" He had reasonable doubt toward that. . . not did he think it had any bearing on whether or not people liked Kaveh. To Alhaitham, that wasn't up for conjecture: of course people liked Kaveh. He was thoughtful, empathetic, and altruistic in all the ways that others could benefit from. The Giving Tree sprang unbidden to mind.

That book always did bother him. . .

"And furthermore, what qualifications merit your deservedness for this title? Hmm. . . babygirl?"

Alhaitham bit back the tut he felt in his tongue, knowing that all it would do was put Kaveh on the defensive. Drinks or otherwise, he was. . . troubled. Alhaitham was certainly one to stir the pot with one as emotionally volatile as he, it was true. This however felt a degree of insensitive even he would steer clear of.

He leaned an elbow on the table, quirking a brow. "Good that you're not dying. Just drunk." he observed, measuring his tone to maintain a casual air. He dare not give any indication of being actually concerned- nothing would make Kaveh clam up faster than unmeasured sincerity from the supposed 'egoist' in his life. So- rational, poised, clipped, keep it judicious.

"Though you've sparked curiosity- why is this the slope we're slipping down today?" He hadn't missed the anniversary, he was certain-

At present, Alhaitham leaned tiredly against the doorframe of Kaveh's room. At three am. Again. While he certainly understood some scholar's tenacity for results 'by any means in any ways', some people ( who owned the house, mind you ), enjoyed to get a reasonable amount of rest in order to prepare for valuable time spent studying and learning. Grinding the midnight oil constantly was not only bad for results, but health.

Not that he was commenting on Kaveh's health. That wasn't his concern.

"If you don't stop hammering, I'm going to have to take drastic measures. You remember what happened last time, don't you?"

He likely didn't, but it was enough to get Kaveh's gears grinding. If he was going to wake Alhaitham up pre-sun, he was at least going to get his kicks.
