Wisdom from strange places on the #royalwedding day - racism and colonial attitudes are not over, and part of what it takes for us (white folk) to heal and move forward from it (because it's us that needs the healing) is for us to be willing to think about our own family and our own history, and be willing to feel remorse for the actions of our ancestors. Some of the witches and rootworkers and brujxs that I listen to say that the point of praying to the ancestors isn't just to get them to help us, it's so we can help them, help them understand what their actions meant, help them atone and undo their wrongs and be redeemed, wherever and in whatever state they may be in. And yes, I think we pray to them for their help - their help in understanding how to do better than them, how to be greater than what they were. And btw, in a weird way I consider the Ladies to be my ancestors, even though I'm not blood related. I think they count, along with all my other blood and cultural and spiritual ancestors. They could be shockingly conservative in some ways (Jennifer was a strict Catholic and believed extramarital sex was a mortal sin, for example, and Clarissa had a deep hatred for the EU and all its regulations, to say nothing of their rampant love for meat and disdain for vegetarians) but they were (are) also joyous souls who lived to make others happy. May we all have a touch of their grace and delight in the simple things. #racialjustice #history #twofatladies #ancestors #rumsodomyandthelash (no comments about the state of their cooking, dears, one does not watch the two fat ladies for historically accurate food from the antebellum South)
