On June.19.2011 we conducted a demonstration observing and commemorating Juneteenth. Utilizing some principles of shock art, we were incredibly successful at raising awareness about concepts like slavery, freedom, progress, history, the present and the future.
For the demonstration, I painted my body with the three primary colors, red, blue, and yellow to take the focus off of my particular pigmentation and to symbolize the common colors of all mankind. I walked barefoot from my apt at 141st and 8th ave to 125th and 8th ave to symbolize the long march of captured Africans from the interior of Africa to the coast. I then proceeded to hang myself from a noose in order to symbolize the pain, despair, and deaths of millions of enslaved Africans. Fellow HarlemSEA member Mavin helped get the noose strung up and secure and he also recorded really beautiful footage of the event, including the photos displayed above.
In order to avoid being choked by the noose for too long a time, I spent some time talking with the people who had gathered around to ask us what we were doing and to record photos and videos of their own. I was surprised and humbled by everyone taking the time to find out what was going on and to give us their support and encouragement. From young to old, the people of Harlem impressed us with their depth of knowledge and their appreciation of artistic and cultural expression. We are all proud to be Harlemites, fully and without hesitation.
After I had hung for some time, Mavin and myself then completed the last leg of the demonstration. We walked back home in a spirit of victory and freedom, proud of our successful demonstration, proud of our heritage and lineage as African-Americans, and determined to make our future-and the future of Harlem- bright and powerful.
The HarlemSEA collective is artists and social entrepreneurs from all walks of life coming together to execute outstanding, meaningful, and creative cultural projects. Our entire mission and obsession is to create a new pattern of culture in Harlem and with this Juneteenth demonstration we were able to stay true to that mission. As always, we encourage you to contact us if you're interested in collaborating with us.
Peace!

Current Project: Smoothie Summer: 6.8.11-9.8.11
Our Smoothie Summer project is an initiative to raise awareness about convenient and healthy beverage options and to improve the health of Harlemites. We will accomplish these objectives by making fresh, all-natural fruit beverages and providing them to our community at a lower cost than those produced by the larger corporations that sell fruit drinks in our neighborhood stores. We're all set to begin operations of our Smooth-Mobile in the second week of June 2011. This intends to be a Summer-long project. We will be out an about 3-5 days a week from noon to sunset, bringing the highlight of low cost, all-natural and additive free juice and smoothies to a block near you. We plan to set up our Smooth-Mobile in close proximity to St. Nicholas Park at 135th street and St.Nicholas, as well as in other areas of high pedestrian traffic. So keep an eye out for our us and our handmade cart on your next stroll through the neighborhood.
This project is a direct benefit to local residents of Central Harlem who are vastly under-served in matters of adequate health and nutritional resources. In Harlem SEA, we strive to meet the needs of our community through creativity, intelligence and progressive action and by working on this project we'll be doing just that. Smoothie Summer is spearheaded by local Harlemites and project directors Shakur Trammel and Mavin Okeowo.
P.S. This project is Stacey approved. Stacey is our beloved brindle-coat blue-nose Pitbull. She's a very smart dog and she loves fruit even though she can't eat grapes.
