I love the yugioh protagonists so much I get very happy whenever I see them like yes those are my eight favorite special little fictional guys
Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend is a really cute reference and also really funny. Yusei punched Jack’s soul so hard that in an alternate universe it had to wear a wrist brace.
my team 5ds crumbs...
I’m sure many of us are familiar with the similarities the Yu-boys have to their adjacent protagonists, some very much so (Yugo/Yusei) and some not quite so much (Yuto/Yuma). But the Yuri Duel Links event has got me thinking… they’re really leaning into the similarities Yuri has with Judai.
He’s always had a fair amount of parallels. There’s the obvious “they both went to a duel academia,” but there’s also the fact that they’ve both had major hands in carrying out mass genocides (jeez), or that they both underwent soul fusions with other character(s), or Judai and Yuri being the only characters to use Super Poly (except that one flunky in Zexal who randomly had it in his hand for one shot…) showing how Yuri is carrying on Judai/GX’s legacy as the Fusion counterpart (and 1/4th of another Supreme King)
OR, most relevant here, their focus on having fun above all else.
Yuri’s constant insistence that he’s here to have fun (which was a part of his character in the show, but it’s focused on much more in the event) and showing no interest in any “obligations” he may have outside of having fun (like apologizing or trying to repair any of the damage he’s done. You go girl give us nothing.)
It’s all very much akin to a pre-season 3 Judai who had little to no sense of responsibility and was almost solely motivated to duel (even when he really shouldn’t have been) by his desire to have fun. And while Yuri’s idea of fun is a little more sadistic than Judai’s (a little more like Yubel, even?) the point is the same.
This line that Yuri says is what got me thinking deeper about this, because I remembered Judai says a near-identical one. (Apologies for the crusty png.)
Obviously they’re not going through the exact same development here. Judai’s arc is about being carefree to a dangerous extent, then swinging to the opposite extreme when he is suddenly saddled with very heavy burdens, and ultimately finding balance between the two: regaining his love of dueling while also bearing a sense of responsibility. Yuri’s arc (if you can call it that, it’s the beginning of one certainly) seems to be a more straightforward “discovering there are things that are fun and also do not come at the expense of other people’s lives” type deal, with a little bit of learning who the hell you’re supposed to be now that you aren’t part of a military school dictatorship or Zarc/Yuya’s soul amalgam sprinkled in. He’s discovering new toys! Everyone clap for him please.
Though it’s not just that fun things don’t have to come at the expense of others… but that it’s MORE fun when they don’t. And that’s the real step forward that Yuri makes in the event. Which honestly fits and doesn’t feel forced, which is something I was concerned about. That boy is a little cockroach! Let him crawl around and make people scream like he always does. Just… maybe some of those screams are of other people having fun too. Maybe. Someone should probably still make sure they're okay, though.
Made me remember this funny coincidence
posting this here so everyone can see, but what are your thoughts on whether we will ever get BBT 2/any type of another ygo movie (including 5ds) - and what would you like to see in it?
Let's see. Conceptually, I think another movie like BBT would actually be a lot, and I mean A LOT more difficult to make now than it was back when BBT itself was made. (And I wholeheartedly believe that BBT was already fairly ambitious.) The thing is, BBT's whole concept and selling point hinged on two things:
The protagonists of all yugioh series up until that point meeting, interacting, and duelling together
The movie tying into 5Ds' plot at the time (or, depending on how harshly you view it, at the very least being adjacent to it)
And the thing is, back then, we only had three yugioh shows. Now, including DM, GX, and 5Ds, we have eight. Each with their own protagonist, cast directly surrounding the protagonist, and ace monster the protagonist can show off. (If you count all the alt universe people in Arc-V, you'd be looking at even more protags.) Purely on a logistical scale, with the aim of having all the yugioh protags meet and interact, I think making something like BBT today borders on impossible. You'd have to tie it into Go Rush's plot somehow (don't know how difficult that would be because I don't know the next thing about Go Rush's plot), you'd have to contrive a reason why and how all the protags are even interacting, and you'd probably have to be careful not to turn this thing into a five-hour slog. (Not that the animation industry would let you.) So where making something with the same concept as BBT is concerned, I don't think we'll ever see that again—or, at the very least, I don't think they'll put all the protagonists into it, only a select few.
However, that's not to say I don't think we'll ever get a yugioh movie again. I could see that happening actually, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you about what. Maybe something to tie into the current, ongoing series' plot again. Maybe something that focusses on legacy characters. I haven't the faintest clue. As for what I'd want to see in it, I honestly couldn't tell you, though, because yugioh movies are... kind of a weird thing. Out of all the movies we've had (4 so far), 3 have had a DM focus and all of them featured Yugi/Atem. So I say this with no hate, but there's a clear DM bias, which makes a movie that would completely deviate from the DM cast and focus on someone else difficult to conceive of. As such, I don't have much of an opinion on what I'd personally like to see—considering how astronomically unlikely it seems that 5Ds will ever be pulled back into the spotlight, I'd already be happy with so much as a crumb hinting at it. But I think the possibility of another yugioh movie is definitely on the table, whatever that possible, future movie may turn out to be.
I know it was just a comment about how it would take too long to make something coherent with all eight of them but also I started shaking in joy at the mere idea of five hours of the yutagonists interacting so there’d definitely be someone very willing to watch that
drop ur Arc V Hot Takes here. And HCs. A lot of them plz. I wanna hear!
my hot take is that i really dont mind the prevalence of legacy characters in the plot. my issue comes from the fact that they threw in these legacy characters and then didnt elaborate at all on them and why theyre here at all (besides the surface level gimmick of recalling older series). i think having a cast full of legacy character couldve worked if there was more explanation to how the split worked. did the split just create new timelines? did it just happen to throw around people from the past into the new dimensions? did it break the structure of time itself? maybe its just the worldbuilder in me speaking but at least for me a lot of the story would be massively elevated by giving us explanations to things that are so noticeable. my hotter take is that i also dont mind the fact that zarc is such a nebulous imprecise concept of a guy that haunts the narrative, and the fact we dont know much of anything about him elevates the fact that hes no longer a person and instead of just Something because zarc as the pro duelist that once was is plain dead
for the first one, I AGREE GIVE US LORE DAMMITTTTT
for the hotter take, mixed feelings, kinda wish at least the Yu-boys knew who he was by the end personally.
FR like gonna be fr i wouldnt mind having a majority legacy cast if only we actually had explanations and lore besides "well it happened dont ask how"
maybe im just generally biased towards characters that are unknown like that, but at the end of the day the canon problem for me is that they tried to kinda have both... they tried to keep zarc as vague as possible and then cram characterisation in the last moment possible which reads as very incomplete and unsatisfactory to either side of the argument
THIS THIS THIS I LOVE THE LEGACY CHARACTERS I JUST WISH WE GOT AN EXPLANATION IT WOULDVE MADE ARC V MY FAVORITE YUGIOH IF WE GOT AN EXPLANATION THAT WOULDVE BEEN SO COOL
Yuya is a really interesting character and my only problem with him is that he’s never really called out on his main flaw ??? that boy is not doing okay why do all his friends just not say anything ??? bro masked his feelings so hard not even the writers could help him😭
the question for yugioh 30th anniversary fanfest this month is about your favorite protagonist and as a certified protagonist fan I gotta say something
But it’s really really hard for me to pick a favorite protagonist tbh so I’m going to say something about all of them!!!
FINALLY
I HAVE THEM ALL
listen i may take 4 weeks to write a 3k word chapter, and i may take 45 minutes to decide whether i should use “laugh” or “chuckle”, but at least i don’t use ai and whatever you’re getting is pure chaos from a human brain
I GOT HIM I GOT HIM I GOT HIM YIPPEE!!!!!!!
I only bought one and it was random out of four and I GOT HIM !!!!! YAY!!!!!
some collection things
now, you may be asking, where is the Yudias plushie? (The Yusaku one is still being delivered I don’t have it yet but it should come later this week)
pov you go to a guys house after a date and he takes you up to his room and shows you this, wyd.
I aspire to reach a level of ‘favorite character’ like this and I was going to joke about how I don’t have money but instead I must lament my current lack of wall space
Also for the question of what I do seeing this at someone’s house i would probably start shaking in excitement (what i usually do when i see stuff related to yugioh irl)
anyway this is pretty cool yeah
My favorite Sevens character: Ohdo “I Care So Much For My Friends That I Refuse To Burden Them With My Issues Even If They Say Please Tell Us Actually We Want To Know Your Feelings Aren’t A Burden Because They Are Actually” Yuga
I actually ADORE it when a character crashes out. Let them YELL let them SCREAM let them HURT THOSE AROUND THEM with or without meaning to. I need to see more crash outs
HE WAS SO CLOSE PLEASEE HE WAS SO CLOSE I THINK HE DESERVES AT LEAST ONE AS A LITTLE TREAT
listen I LOVE go rush but (spoilers)
the season two finale was an awesome idea and they really should’ve gotten more out of it instead of making everyone act irrationally in order to get a whole new season of plot lines that turn out to be generally pointless
Like there are good things in season three (Yudias being an Ohdo, the darkmen were kind of fun, etc.) but also oh my goodness Yuga should’ve been clearly stated to be Otes (because I still think he was, at least before the timeline changed at the end and stuff)
No “implied” no “maybe” just SHOW IT HAPPEN WE ALL KNEW IT WAS HIM
I know they wanted to get Yuga out of the way so that he wouldn’t overshadow everyone else but like??? He was already the final boss of season two just ??? Keep that ??? They could’ve shown us how he got Sevens Fear Magician (awesome looking card btw), or just something more of how he felt about the whole situation!! The end of season two feels like him reaching his breaking point, but he spends the entire buildup off-screen ?????? I know he and Otes are notorious for hiding information (either on purpose or accidentally) but like even Otes said some stuff about himself (A LOT OF WHICH LINES UP WITH WHAT YUGA DOES IN GO RUSH BY THE WAY) during his boss fight!! YOU CANT JUST MEMORY BEAM YUGA’S ENTIRE LIFE INTO EVERYONE’S HEADS AND NOT SHOW US WHAT HE’S BEEN DOING
this makes me so upset like sevens and go rush are so good and the Otes thing is so interesting to me but THEY DONT TELL US ANYTHING ?????
STOP. SHOWING ME. SELF INSERT ROMANCE. SPECIFICALLY WITH ALL THE SUPERHEROES. IM NOT EVEN IN ANY OF THOSE FANDOMS
