Wrigglers- baby yoga and more!
Learn multi-sensory baby yoga and movement routines designed to help your baby develop and grow whilst having fun! Routines are designed to enhance visual and auditory tracking, to work on spacial awareness and balance (vestibular system), to enhance 'sense of self' and to gently help baby progress to their next developmental milestone. Classes are great for socialising - both parent and baby. We're accessible for all baby and carer partnerships (mums, dads, grannies, aunties ...) We're lively yet structured, with the familiarity of our Meet & Greet, Baby Sun Salute & Welcome songs but with changing movements for baby each and every week! Babies love the 'whats in the box' part of our class! Contact [email protected] or on 07734 511605 to discuss or book online now for next term http://www.harmony-hitchin.co.uk/product/babyyoga Special offer if you bring a friend! Once baby becomes actively mobile we recommend they move onto our Daisy Movers class, Wednesdays 11am.
Tinies- perfect for you and your newborn baby
Baby calming, yoga and massage! Learn beautiful full body infant massage sequences coupled with reflexology and gentle soft stretch, but packaged in a completely unique way - this is so much more than just baby massage! Your teacher is fully trained in IPTI approved infant massage and movement for baby. Sessions are designed for even the most sensitive baby - with lots of in-arms time, rocking, soothing sounds and white noise. Your baby won't need to lay on their back for extended periods in order to participate (so ideal for babies who need cuddles, or babies with reflux). It doesn't matter if baby cries .... and even when this happens our lovely calming techniques really tend to soothe them so quickly. We're accessible for all mums, not just the mums and babies suffering with colic! We're fun ..... Our learning is serious yes, but our class is relaxing, refreshing and friendly. We provide a community of like-minded mums all wanting to talk about the positives of bringing up baby and celebrating all choices (all types of feeding, nappies, parenting attitudes are welcome). Techniques can help common ailments like colic, reflux, tight neck (torticollis) and flat head, as well as improving digestion and sleep! Mums can enjoy some gentle postnatal movement and relaxation! Book online now http://www.harmony-hitchin.co.uk/product/daisy%20baby or contact Teresa on 07734 511605 or email [email protected] to discuss. Once baby has completed this course, or for mums finding us later into the first year with their baby, we highly recommend our next step Wrigglers module ..... where baby enjoys bigger stretches, bigger bounces and generally lots of lively fun!
Happy New Year from everyone at Harmony, Hitchin!

Mindfulness: the answer to life, the universe and everything
In this article Kate Griffiths shows why a scarcity mindset is so prevalent in people and how you can counteract that to have a life of greater flow and ease.Â
Abundance is a mindset that we can choose to adopt or not. Lynn Serafinn in her book The 7 Graces of Marketing argues that abundance is our natural state of being. I suggest that one of the reasons that appears not to be the case at the moment is that it can be difficult to maintain due to an overwhelming emphasis on negativity in our environment. A good example of this is the lack of good news stories in the media.
Is the disposition you have simply a matter of choice? When I examined some of the latest research, it felt a bit of an oversimplification. We now understand a great deal about the triune brain. You will see as I share some of these findings how the research helps to explain why human beings can be so contradictory. How despite receiving reasoned argument to the contrary, people can go on believing and behaving in way that to an observer from another planet would just seem weird.
Letâs look at the brain so that I can illustrate this point more clearly. You have three brains in your skull: the lizard (reptilian) brain, the dog (limbic system) brain, and the human (neo cortex) brain.
The oldest brain is the lizard brain which appeared a couple of hundred million years ago and that is when lust, anger and aggression appeared on our planet for the very first time. Lizard brains are small and simple and control breathing, vision and bodily movement. Then about 100 million years ago, mammals appeared and with them came something much more complex, which we can sum up as love and loyalty. The limbic system grew on top of the lizard brain and interestingly dogs have two brains. Evolution did not get rid of the lizard brain because it performs basic bodily functions so well; rather it added a more complex layer. This layer is what enables dogs to form positive emotional attachment to humans. Then much more recently around a few hundred thousand years ago, poetry, art, language and reason appeared at the time apes evolved into our ancestors.
Now that we understand a bit more of how human brains are wired, letâs explore what that means. With the emergence of the human brain, we gained mathematics and music; we also got deception and politics. We could redefine this by saying that with the human brain we created the possibility of Machiavelli as well as Mozart. Furthermore the human brain (neo-cortex) is semi-independent from the lizard and dog brain, which means it runs its thinking programmes whilst the older brains run their emotion-based programmes. Whilst it is more complex and has the added advantage that language resides in it, the neo-cortex cannot control the limbic system and the reptilian brain because emotions are found in the two older brains. Letâs explore that a bit further. Imagine for a moment that you had an elephant and you were trying to get it to move. You could not force it to move because it is far stronger than you. The only way you can get it to move is if it has a desire to move. In other words sustainable change is only possible in human beings when we engage our emotions as well as our thinking brain because they are very powerful and are what drive us.Â
What does this mean for us today in terms of the world we live in? Another way of framing this conundrum is to explore a live issue. Our reason can understand that burning fossil fuels is not good for the environment and that we need to support the development of alternative sources of energy. Politicians, who understand how the triune brain works, will stir up fear-based responses in us so that they can mobilise the lizard and dog brains and wash over our reason with waves of emotion. The net result is that they will then get the public support they need to fulfil their intention to bring large-scale fracking into the UK. To take this further, imagine you are an alien from another planet and be an observer on the current debates that are being held in the media about the extraction of shale gas. How balanced is the reporting? How is each side portrayed?
So what does this mean? Seth Godin in his post Quieting the lizard brain (http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2010/01/quieting-the-lizard-brain.html) wrote resistance grows in strength ⌠as we get closer to an insight, as we get closer to the truth of what we really want. That's because the lizard hates change⌠and risk. He goes on to recommend that as the lizard brain is here to stay our job is to figure out how to quiet it and ignore it.
In my view that is not really satisfactory and fortunately neuroscientists have discovered that there is a way to better integrate our three brains. Mindfulness meditation rewires and harmonises the triune brain. It takes time so you need patience and perseverance but it works. This was backed up in a recent BBC report (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23229014) which shared some amazing facts on mindset. Mosley, a medical journalist, who wrote the article, undertook some tests, which showed he was more prone to an âEeyoreâ disposition. Professor Elaine Fox and her team measured the levels of electrical activity on the two sides of his brain and found that there was more electrical activity in his right frontal cortex. This is associated with people who tend to have higher levels of negativity and anxiety. After seven weeks of doing mindfulness meditation, Moseley felt much calmer and returned to Professor Fox's lab for more tests. The results were extremely encouraging. So the conclusion he drew was that even in later life it is possible to change your outlook.
To conclude mindfulness not only provides you with a tool to harmonise your three brains and rewire them; there is a strong likelihood that doing the practice regularly will lead you to having a sunnier disposition; and at the very least decrease your stress, which means that you will have greater creativity. What is exciting about these discoveries is that the more you understand about how you operate and the tools you have at your disposal to enable you to be in flow more of the time, the greater the ease you will have in your life. It is also one of the main reasons that I incorporate mindfulness into my work as a consultant and coach. It also influences the way that I parent too.Â
To find out more about mindfulness then book in for my drop-in class at Harmony on Thursday evenings 8.15pm. I also offer work with individuals suffering from anxiety and you can find out more about that and the workshops that I run from my website (http://wholeselfleadership.com)
âŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚâŚ...................................................
I love the fact that I am alive now because we are at a turning point in society. The old ways of constant growth do not work. Many people are starting to wake up and realise this but they do not necessarily have the tools to design a new way of doing business.
Currently my passion is helping individuals, teams and leaders have more mindful dialogue by creating conversations that lead to change. For such conversations to happen it is vital that consideration is given to the environment, the energy of each participant and as a facilitator it is my role to build a safe space to allow the magic to happen. My connection through conversation process is a great vehicle for this.
As a coach I work with individual clients on ways to address stress and anxiety using mindfulness as well as specific challenges where they need to have courageous conversations.
If any of this strikes a chord then I invite you to connect and let's have a conversation.

Benefits of Meditation
Meditation has a whole world of benefits but is also just a lovely way to get back to you, come back to centre and relax. If I feel myself affected by worry or drained by stress, if I feel less than myself, I turn to meditation. I didn't learn it overnight, It is easy to get frustrated and give up when trying to find a place of peace within you, especially if you live your life at 100 mph. But everyone can do it. You don't have to spend years in a buddhist retreat either (although sometimes an ACTUAL escape from day to day life is most welcome). It's simply a matter of giving yourself time. And you can start with just a little time - Maybe setting yourself aside 10 minutes before you get up in the morning to do some focused breathing or visualisation. And maybe to begin with you only manage 5 minutes out of the 10, that's fine. It's 5 minutes more than you were doing before!  Where to start  Focused breathing  Focused breathing or power breathing is a great way to stop your thoughts in their tracks and just be still and calm. You start by taking in a few slow relaxed breaths. Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth to create a cycle of air flow. If this doesn't feel comfortable just breathe through your nose - feeling comfortable and relaxed is key! Once you feel your breathing is steady and even count how many seconds it takes for you to breathe in, and how many seconds it takes to breathe out, maybe it's 4 or 5 seconds each way, maybe less, maybe more. Now count your breath in and then on the out breath you're going to breath out even slower so you're doubling the count for the out breath. So if it takes 4 seconds to breathe in, your out breath will take 8 seconds. And the idea isn't to strain yourself on the out breath because you can't find any more air to breathe out! It's all about allowing your breathing to slow right down. So your out breath will be a lot gentler and slower than your in breath. And you don't need to start speeding up your in breath either! The in breath feels relaxed and natural, the out breath feels slow and gentle, but still relaxed and natural. And as you keep counting your breath in, and counting your breath out you will find that it's near on impossible for your thoughts to occupy your mind. And if you find yourself distracted by anything, a thought, a sound, whatever, just refocus on your breathing and counting.  Try it! Even if it is just for a couple of minutes a day, it will be worth it. And it can help lead onto other forms of meditation.  Note: you can also use this breathing technique if you suffer from panic/anxiety attacks as it just slows everything down and gets you back in control. Or during childbirth *Daisy mums will know this!*   Or come along to our regular Wednesday Guided Meditation classes at 6pm BOOK NOW!

Weight Control Tips (Part 3)
Itâs important to create an image or a feeling of the end result you are aiming for and to make that image or that feeling as real as possible.
This is your instruction to your body and mind! This is you telling yourself where youâre going- think of it as setting your destination in the sat nav! Use all of your senses in this creation, how do you look? how do you feel? What can you hear? What can you smell? What can you taste?
So perhaps you can see yourself looking slim and active, wearing the clothes you want to get back into or new ones you love, moving around more easily, receiving compliments and positive comments about how amazing you look and how well you have done. Maybe you can see yourself eating the right foods for you, drinking plenty of water, taking the stairs rather than the lift, saying yes to positive opportunities because you feel more confident, smiling and being happy!
See yourself as the person you want to be, feel yourself as the person you want to be, hear yourself as the person you want to be, already start thinking in the way that you will when you are the person you want to be!
Be the person you want to be because if you can create it within you first, the outside appearance is just a matter of time!
