Less than a matter of hours since Piper has held her baby for the first time, her mother calls upon her.
She doesn’t need to look away from the bassinet to realise Aphrodite’s presence; she can feel the shift in the room as the goddess materializes behind her, the minute way that the whole world seems to tilt on its axis — even the smell of the air changes, from baby to something more sweet and lilting with just the slightest hint of something more seductive and musky. Instead she focuses on adjusting the baby blanket that the elders out at on the reservation weaved for her, letting herself become slightly memorised by the way that moonlight glances through Malakai’s silken lashes onto his full, chubby cheeks.
She clears her throat but still doesn’t face her mother. “Absolutely not.”
She can estimate her mother’s response almost perfectly; she doesn’t have any idea how Aphrodite has manifested herself in this current moment, but Piper can already picture her mother’s disappointed pout, the defiant way she pops a hip. “Oh, sweetheart, I hadn’t even said anything yet.”
