You know what would have made better television? Neil Hargrove being possessed by the Mind Flayer.

Think about it, he starts acting weird around the house and even Billy notices it but obviously doesn't question him. When El and Max spy on Billy she doesn't see him attacking Heather but instead they see him watching Neil attacking someone else.

They question him and he tells them to stay out of it. So thinking Billy is actually also possessed because of the whole Heather and blood in the bathroom thing they get him into the sauna but in a more "oh, there's a kid stuck in there" type of bait and then when he doesn't go ape they let him out and explain before he can get real pissed.

He confirms what they saw after El shows him her powers, so he'll believe them. Then they trick Neil into the sauna either through Billy as bait or Max and he doesn't break through the control because he's had this in him the whole time, he attacks El and Billy is frozen, he can't move or help at all because he's terrified of the monster infront of him.

Everything is quite similar except for the fact Billy is helping the kids. Until the Mall where Neil has El infront of the Mind Flayer, obviously mind tricks don't work and instead Billy runs in and kills his father right there and then. Having learned not to take his abuse anymore and over the course of being surrounded by people who care he grows as a person. He tries to make things right with Sinclair and we actually get to see his relationship with Max grow. You know, instead of having a barely legal teenager sacrifice himself for redemption we get to see him try and reach it. Alive.

i think we need to consider harringrove home videos that are just steve shoving a camera in billys face at any given moment and billy being a big grump about it cuz usually steves filming the most mundane shit like billy putting together a new coffee table and the instructions arent making sense and hes about to break the damn thing in half but then steves setting the camera down somewhere where its still focused on billy and he goes over and climbs on him and kisses all over his face and billys grumbling about steve being on top of him but that lasts all of 2 seconds before billys laughing and kissing him back and maybe tickling him idk and then they fall out of frame and you can fill in the rest with your imagination :)
